@kti05hnu58 Still stalled. Special interests rule. Disgusting but true. If I had an answer I would certainly share it. Now that we know American horses are NOT safe for human consumption, it is incredibly irresponsible or our govt. to allow our horses to continue to be presented for slaughter, They ought to be ashamed.
I did a presentation on horse slaughter for 4-H and ended up making it all the way to the national competition in louisville, ky. me and my partner took a look at BOTH sides of the slaughter argument in a completely non-biased way, and be a horse owner/lover myself i can say with total belief and commitment to my statement that horse slaughter is something we need back in the united states. there are facts to back it up and that in most cases there are horses better off because of slaughter.
@zeeemanchick Why do we need slaughter in the US? We are exporting as many horses as the market will bear now - we couldn't sell more no matter WHERE the plants are. And, how can you say slaughter is the answer to so-called "unwanted horses" when we HAVE slaughter and it's not helping at all?
Horse slaughter is a business not a charity to take care of the monstrous over breeding of-especially-Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds. It is also cruel beyond your wildest nightmares. I've been there.
@brian93ist You need to read what the Mayor of Kaufman has to say about Dallas Crown. These plants are foreign owned so they don't pay corporate taxes, no export tariffs and all profits go home overseas. They commit horrible environmental violations and ignore citations. Horses have twice as much blood as cattle and it overwhelmed their water treatment ability. Kaufman had horse blood running down the gutters! I was there and I SAW this. Jobs are low pay, high turnover and dangerous.
@brian93ist ~ Are you aware that the slaughter plants - being foreign owned do not pay US taxes? Canada and Mexico don't get any tax money from them either. However, Canada and Mexico have to pay, and pay dearly to clean up the environmental damage done by these hell holes. As for the jobs - they are minimum wage and are usually done by illegals who will stay silent. According to OSHA these are among the most dangerous in the country. They are dehumanizing and therefore a lot of turnover. Bad.
@MorganLver The reason exporting horses to slaughter is not helping is exactly for the reason in its self, we are EXPORTING them. This is costing us way more money than it would if we had plants in the US. With the cost of gas going up, think about it... is it cheaper to truck to mexico and canada or somewhere local, for me it would be down to CT. I as well have been to a slaughter plant and all thats needed are stricter regulations. Im not trying to sound heartless just truthful...
@zeeemanchick ~ Are you REALLY that ignorant about how horses are sold for slaughter? If so, why should anyone be interested in anything you have to say? People DO NOT truck their own horses to Mexico and Canada! They simply go to the local auction where they always went and sell their horse to the highest bidder. We have always sold thousands of horses to Canada and Mexico for slaughter. The very same kill buyers that were there then are there now, ready, willing and able to take those horses.
@brian93ist Yep, and you seem to be victim to all of them. Horses are not worthless to people that care about them. Horses are NOT raised as food animals in the US so they are regularly exposed to substances that are banned from the human food chain. Plainly stated: American horses are NOT safe to eat. It is NOT the same as slaughtering a cow. Horses are NOT cattle, not in temperament and not in size. Cattle equipment does NOT work for horses and it is beyond inhumane. YOU must live in a city!
@brian93ist Brian ~ There IS NO BAN! If you want to slaughter your own horse and eat it, fine. You just can't SELL the meat for human consumption. GET IT? Horses are NOT raised for food in the US, and they are not REGULATED like food animals by the FDA. That's why they can be regularly exposed to banned substances like bute, ivermectin, Ace, GastroGard, Strongid C. Quest to name only a few. If you yourself want to raise them to eat yourself, fine. You still cannot SELL them to other people.
@brian93ist Ya know, brian, I'm beginning to think you're nothing but a troll trying to stir up trouble. I say this because NO ONE with a brain in their head would make such an idiotic statement. Of course, maybe you DO judge the worth even of living beings by how much money you can get for them. Either way, I don't care to converse with you. If a horse is dangerous it was probably make that way by human mishandling. It should be put down by euthanasia by a veterinarian.
@brian93ist I never said they were worthless, i simply feel that bringing slaughter back will help boost the equine economy. Trainers can no longer go to an auction an take a chance on a horse because if something goes wrong they have no alternative and are stuck losing money. atleast with slaughter they could break even.
@zeeemanchick horses aparently have to pay for what us humans did to them how is that right?!?!!? i say slaughter the slaughterers and people who sold those horses that ended up dead. 96% are healthy horses or young horses with the rest of there life ahead of them,
I don't care what anybody says if you ever saw a horse dragged or beaten to get them into the killer chute you could never say it was a humane alternative! It is a cheap out for irresponsible owners, breeders, and horse traders. You don't want your animal anymore euthanize it if you can't or won't get them another home, quit breeding too many animals whose confirmation/disposition doesn't stand up, don't send your animal to auction where prices are too cheap and killer buyers are able to buy.
@brian93ist Cows are not horses. Horses are different in size, temperament, physical characteristics and sensitivity. Equipment designed for cattle DOES NOT WORK for horses.
@sandy92460 So basically, slaughters OK if you do it yourself?
Riddle me this. Once you've killed your animal (euthanasia) what's morally wrong about selling the meat (slaughter)?
Oh and what form of euthanasia is acceptable in your eyes? Please don't say shooting because it's you bleeding-heart fluffy bunny liberals who are trying to ban guns also. A deadly inoculant? Poisoning?
There is no valid argument to ban captive bolt gun slaughter. NOT ONE. Screw public opinion.
@ihaterobbie123 putting a sick or injured horse out of its misery is fine and then selling the meat so long as it is humane but most horses are unwanted, young and still got a life to live, killing them is wrong.
@kti05hnu58 - THIS BILL HAS BEEN STALLED, and Missouri is working on opening a slaughter plant for horses this week. It is beyond sickening how a few greedy & rotten politicians care more about money than our horses or what the people want.
@octoberfire13 Man, is this stuff OLD! And the legislation is STILL stuck in committee! Anyway, Octoberfire, that bill in Missouri died. Didn't even make it to the floor for a vote. Not much point in building a slaughter plant if you can't sell the meat.
I would love to see also a bill that would help struggling horse owners keep their horses, and also help the people provideo comunity riding programs.
The benefits of riding horses are substantial... People improved their speech and communication and balance, being with horses learned to improve relationships, and that studies show that being with animals like horses reduced crime.
One more thing, Horeback riding for one hour burns 350 calories! So it's not only fun, it's healthy.
What is the next step here? I have been fighting to get bills like this passed for the past 2 years, & every year, just as Senator Landreiu said, it ends up getting stalled behind closed doors by only a few people in a committee, even after the House passes it, and the Senate has it ready to go for a vote.
Has this bill been given a voting date for the floor of the Senate?
There are no words for how happy I will be on the day that slaughtering American Horses becomes illegal.
I'm always glad to see John McCain support bills like this, as well as my own Senators. It just shows that Republicans and Democrats can get together on some things, it shows how important protecting America's culture is. Mr. Ensign has also been among the staunchest supporters of this measure.
The only people who hold us back are the agriculture lobby, Senator Larry "Foot Tappin'" Craig was part of this.
