The Chinese leadership wants respect. Well...the Chinese leadership needs to respect Taiwan, and stop telling it want to do. China is a country founded based on power sharing among a few, and the CCP is more concerned with survival than anything else. So, they are damn afraid of democracy. The recent visit by PLA General Chen highlight and exposed China's very "primitive" attitude and policy toward the U.S. and Taiwan. China's military and foreign policy are too far behind modern era.
China is important economically to the U.S. but it is a problem in other issues. Obama needs to go ahead to aprove F-16 sales to Taiwan. Pleasing China means casting doubts on the U.S. and losing important friends in that region. The U.S.-China friendship can only go so far because they are two totally different countries. Delaying arms sales to Taiwan can only work for so long. It is not the right policy in engaging China cause China will want more. Obama should not be afraid of the Chinese.

Taiwan protection was a vestige of the Cold War when protection against Communist advances was "the cool thing to say" to reassure Democratic allies that US will stand by them.
They realized back then KMT was lost when China won the mainland, but China back then couldn't do anything about it.

The US trained the South Vietnam, but they still lost. That doesn't mean the US lost the war. Your analogy to say the US lost the Vietnam war is misplaced because South Vietnam lost when they couldn't fight the North by themselves and the US had pulled out over two years earlier, but the US certainly was not defeated.
The war was unpopular at home and Congress cut funding, but the US did not lose.
You are over-generalizing.

@orionpirates I KNOW the facts. The US withdrawal was orderly 2 1/2 years before Saigon all US troops were out. I guess now you can perpetrate a fresh myth since combat troops have withdrawn from Iraq also (which is also not a loss). The US did lose the political WILL in Vietnam, but strictly speaking, the US was not militarily defeated in Vietnam. You can twist it around anyway you want. Plain fact is US left Vietnam when Congress cut funds and public opinion demanded it.

B-U-L-L-S-H-I-T. The "mission" was to let the North and South decide the future of their own country, numb nuts. The North won, so the future was decided. However, it was not supposed to be a military conquest to determine Vietnam's future. It was to be done through the political process, but the North broke the agreement and overran the South. So US did not lose, by your own definition.

No, what it means is that the US failed in Vietnam, but that is not synonymous with losing. Anyway, Vietnam is becoming more and more capitalist (as is China), which means in the end, the US won because there are very few fully communist countries
anymore. Even China dumped a centralyl planned economy in favor of western style
capitalism. So in the end, Communism lost and capitalism (the US way) won out.
US influence basically conquered Communism.
