For everyone saying that this is why mma should be done in a cage. its all about what you prefer. i prefer the ring because its a better atmosphere for a fighter to display his standup. footwork is key in the ring. the cage favors more wrestler based fighters as a wrestler can pin his opponent against a cage and transition towards a take down or just punish a fighter with strikes. its all in what you prefer. I enjoy both.
MMA should still be done in a ring- too many fighters use the cage as means to win as opposed to their fighting skill. You cant wall and stall in a ring. The problem here is with the ropes themselves.
You didn't see too many ring outs in Pride did you?
Ultimate Cage-Humping can be stopped in the UFC however - all it would take would be a simple rule change of breaking when fighters clinch against the cage.
Take UFC fighters and put them in a ring, 80% of their fight strategy would be screwed.
Pride has a couple of ring outs, not too many, but the main problem is that whole "Stop Don't Move" bit where they "Stop" and "Don't Move" ...I don't want breaks in my MMA.
@DJSexStyle I take your point - however I think that's the lesser of two evils compared with cage'n'pray.
As I said in my comment - a cage can work if you stop the fighters using it as a weapon and have them decide the contest based off striking/grappling/submissions. The cage should simply be the barrier, not a factor in the fight.
If that situation was somehow implemented, the ring would obsolete and the cage would make the most sense for the sport.
@DJSexStyle Completely agree. That said, there were plenty of ring-outs. Hell, even UFC's cage was raised, due to Tank Abbott trying to throw an opponent over the top of it! :D The ring is for boxing, kickboxing. It's simply not suitable for MMA, for sport & safety reasons, aswell as entertainment reasons.
@DJSexStyle you don't want breakbut i don't want wall and stall humping either....
honestly but the ring and the cage has it's good and bads, hard to decide lol....but what i like about japanese mma better is that if they are on the ground too long an dnot doing anything, the ref stands them up.....that rarely happens in american mma, especially in the ufc and it just is very boring sometimes. i can understand if they are working and trying subs, but if they are just taking breathers.....
@DJSexStyle I think MMA should both have the ring and the cage... I myself prefer the Bellator circle cage to the octagon used by many other promotions because it has no corners. I also completely agree with AQ1888 that the octagon is dominated by American smother and control wrestlers. Im also starting to see a trend in the UFC of very boring PPV's.. Why? because you have wrestlers who have learned to use the octagon and control there opponent for decision wins, the UFC is ridden with them..
@bogglemynoggles I dont hate wrestlers at all, MMA is total combat, Boxing is boxing, K-1 is K-1. I like them all.
What I have issues with isn't wrestling - its the way in which fighters in the Cage push their opponents into the cage and keep them pinned there.
If a MMA fighter switches levels perfectly and executes a sweet single/double I enjoy watching it as much as crisp punching combinations and submission execution.
sakurai falling out once would have been bad enough. But having the fight end because he fell through the ropes is more than enough reason for MMA to be in a cage. Plus the whole fighter safety thing is kinda crucial. He got hit with a body knee and crumpled. In a cage, he'd fall against the cage, get tko'd by a few more punches, maybe not even get KO'd. But with the ropes and ring, he free-falls about 7 feet onto his head on hardwood. KTFO.
@jarmanA A padded platform around the ring would remedy this here. A stated in my other replies - a cage is the ideal barrier for MMA, if implemented in the right way.
or they would just do the same thing in the corner of a ring.
cages are the best way to go. grappling is a part of the sport. if people want to stall, they will stall. ive seen just as many people stalling by going under the ropes.
not to mention they wouldn't fall 10 feet and land on their head.
@seifer666 Don't get into comparing MMA to a real fight. MMA is a sport and has been succesfully presented in both a ring and a cage, it is not a real fight. Even in early UFCs there were groundrules. Not a whole lot, but still...
Fighting where all leg strikes are forbiden to downed opponent, or fighting where knees, stomps & soccer kicks are allowed? (This fight is under that rules :P)
Saying the usage of the cage isn't part of "fighting skills" is plain ridiculous. There is no "problem" - a ring and an octagon are just different. That's a fact. And I'm not talking about rules here. Also, ring fighters have trouble in the UFC too, so your last point doesn't even matter. If anything, you prefer a ring, and some of us prefer a cage - that's all.
@cougher989 Actually I have always preferred the cage, just not the abuse of it (wall and stall). My issue is with the tactic of pushing guys against the cage for decision victories instead of winning decisively in the centre of the octagon.
However my original point was that MMA can be done effectively in rings as well - regardless of how poorly the ring was set up for this particular event.
Hope that's clear now, apologies if it wasn't in my previous posts.
Great. More footage we can show the Victorian "athletic commission" to un-ban the cage in Melbourne. The ring doesn't work. I love it to death, but it's fucking retarded and not self-sufficient.
It's sad most of you just saw or heard about this fight for the first time. lol at all the cage comments, what do you clowns want to let kalibs run wild? ring 4 life faggots.
@donde787 That was as much Big Dan's "fault" for not simply calling a foul for timidity (as I believe was supported in the rules... the ref being allowed to call foul) as the cage... which in any case can be adjusted by cage size, just like a ring.
As for the ring... I think of that one time with Kid Yamamoto where he and his opponent went through the ropes in a position that pretty much REQUIRED the ropes, and then the officials couldn't figure out what ground position to reset them in...
@jm357m According to ringside photographer Dan Herbertson, he jumped out of the way but didn't realize that there was no ringside official nearby to catch him (Sakurai that is).
@dynosaur I think it's hard to argue for either side. Sure, the cage prevents you from flying out of the ring and onto the hard wood floor, but that danger can be prevented by having a padded area around the ring. The thing I don't like about the cage is that some fighter will hold you against the cage all day and others use the "cage walk" to escape subs. IMO, I prefer rings.
@dynosaur cage but the rules are favored for wrestlers and judging criteria is aimed at wrestlers being on top and don't give the proper scoring for someone in active guard and effective in guard. All because the guy is laying on top of you. They need a fusion with in the two cus I tired of fighters that fight in ring and transition to cage is a disadvantage and rules to judging is differ from both worlds. They need a solution for both in fairness of equal counter parts of both.
Really sad to see sakurai's face when he heard "TKO"
Its bullshit, the guy fell full force onto the back of his head because of the stupid ring. I Feel sorry for him, even though i think fukuda was going to win anyway.
if he is faceing nick ring i think hes got it, nickk ring was on the ultimate fighter show and he is undefeated but he did not look that good as a fighter but dont under estimate anyone
Awesome fight, hopefully Fukuda steamrolls Nick Ring and goes on to participate in more awesome fights in the UFC. Looking forward to seeing more of him.
@BabaluJack well it was only a good match cause sakurai stood up....if fukuda went to the ufc and fought a guy who wants to grind it out for decision, i don't think it would be an exciting match....fukuda might be exciting but if his opponent is not, then the match won be....i just hope they give him a good opponent.
@DJSexStyle I hope so. He still played a dangerous game cuz the fight could have been stopped because of his eye. BTW he's awesome. His next opponent is undefeated so I'm a little bit worried, but at least, that will be a good match.
