I doubt you could actually. I tried this in AE once, and I couldn't get that nice bubbly texture to look realistic.

thats why you make a texture in Photoshop and use it as a matte, also use Trapcode Particular to get the smoke.

The problem is, the bubbly texture needs to warp the surface of the explosion, and I don't see any way to do that realistically with AE

the (bubbly) texture, thats smoke. if you just expand the particles in Particular and change the colors it works perfect, (I don't want to really get into an in depth tutorial right now)

Not bad, you have skill, but you neet do know how explosions work. What you have is an almost-solid explosion. What you *need* is a more dynamic system.

The reason a nuclear explosion maintains its mushroom-like shape is convection: The pillar in the center is the hot, and pushes up. Once it reaches the top, it cools down and gets pushed aside by the hot air underneath.

So it's not all going up, just the middle. The outside goes up too, sure, but it goes down, relative to the pillar.

i agree, but u have to realise that we're talking about 3DS Max here..probably one of the hardest 3d makers in the world...that would have taken quite a lot of effort, fir the model of it, then the animation of each individual bump, then the colours/textures, then the lighting, then the sound, then the rendering.....it takes a lot of effort...but i agree, could look more real!:)
