I just played with Seamus yesterday, and I can't say enough positive things about this cat's playing, there must be sumthin in the water in Canada....I love this, his playing is emotional and full of command. All the stars you have, I'm going to be listening to Mr. Blake as often as I can.
Hey Seamus--just checking your shit out. I really think you have the hippest harmoniic concept happening comparec to any of us "sub 50" tenor guys. Continue to inspire and play your ass off!! Eric Alexander
@stephenbyth "The depth of sound?" Are you joking? I mean, just listen to that echo. If you focus solely on sound here, just about anyone would sound just like this in a big concert hall unmic'ed.
@saxophile1 i was just making a comment on how great i think his sound is.. obviously the acoustics of the hall effect the sound in this video, but he has a fat, beautiful sound regardless of the venue he plays in.. and i dont think a great deal of people could sound like seamus blake if playing solo in a concert hall.. lol
@saxophile1 He sounds just as fantastic live. A saxophone sound like that is rare and remarkable. Its obviously taken years and years of work and it shows. He can play unmiked with drummers like Ari Hoenig and be heard just fine. Just a georgous sound and approach, one of the best.
@joeywags That's ur opinion of course; & I though I realize he's good, at the top of my list of the best are guys like Johnny Griffin, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Gene Ammons--or cats that played with a bigger, broader--and dare I say--more soulful sound to boot. I don't care for the sound of the current guys who all sound ultrafocused like Brecker "clones." In fact, if folks were not shown who this was, even experienced listeners would likely have a hard time telling this from say, Chris Potter.
@saxophile1 What makes a sound soulful? I don't think you know what you are talking about. Experienced listeners definitely know this isn't Chris Potter as well...
man that high B at 1:59 sends chills down my spine. the first time i heard this i wasn't watching the screen and I honestly thought a trumpet player came through and started playing into his chorus. Killer sound, seamus.
There is no point in comparing Seamus/Joshua/Potter/etc. They are all great and have respect for one another...
I will state the following here, because this is an incredible video of Seamus playing sax... Joshua Redman once told me "I learned to play altissimo from Seamus".

Blake's improvisational language is not as advanced as say Chris Potter or Joshua Redman, but holy s*** does he have a nice tone!!!! Love it!
