Honestly, if you think this scene needs music, you've missed the entire point of it. Hitchcock chose to use no music in this scene in order to enhance the isolation and suspense that the audience feels. Filmmakers make sound choices in order to manipulate audiences' emotions, not because it will sound "epic."
the point of not using music in this scene was because of the technique of having diegetic music to create suspense, music doesnt always have to be used even though it does make the scene more busy and rushed.
I love your video.. It inspire me to make my own edit to the scene. Which I did on Window Live Movie Maker. I don't know how to upload it without uploading the whole movie... I just want to cut and load the crop duster scene... any advice!
if this scene was in a modern movie, the plane would have barrel rolled at 30 ft altitude, and when crashing into the tanker, it would have blew up half the state. that s why i like old movies. realism
@argebarse No they didn't, that was a radio-controlled model, and not a very good one at that. My only complaint about this film is that they could have used a real Boeing Stearman for the flying scenes, and then blown up a model crashing into the fuel tanker.
While the music you added was somewhat correct during the moments when Grant is running and avoiding bullets, it doesn't work when he is on his knees hiding in the corn field. Also, the impact of when Herrmann and Hitchcock decided to end the silence and add music to the scene is lessened. It surprises the audience and really excites the scene. It doesn't repeat the main theme but a wonderful variation of the main theme.
i like how at the start of the film through out actually, Grant has snappy comebacks and its beliveable that he could get into all this mess. the score is calssic and works so well and its so remarkable and unforgettable. Its classic on the run chase music! Grant and Hitchcock and that beranrd guy really can make a film. This is one of the best all time!
Have you noticed how Hitchcock has worked on the different colours ? Grant's suit (blue-grey), the man of the bus' suit (brown), the asphalt ground (grey), the fields (light brown). It helps focusing our attention on Grant who wears dark colours, when everything around is clearer. It makes us feel that Grant is in the middle of nowhere and vulnerable. That's masterwork !
I like that Greyhound Scencruiser and the old bus that picks the farmer up. I noticed Highway 41 . . .I wonder if the same U.S. 41 which goes out of Chicago through Ind. south towards Evansville?
of course, you are referring to the actual scene in Calif. where the film was shot, not Indiana. I understand Dean was a Hoosier. Thanks for the comment. I see Martin Landau is in a new movie.
@rocksmeller99 It's a stretch of road in California. The stretch of road is viewable on Google Maps, and it looks close to what it looked like back in 1959. According to Wikipedia: The cropduster sequence, meant to take place in northern Indiana, was shot on location on Garces Highway (155) near the towns of Wasco and Delano, north of Bakersfield in Kern County, California (35°45′38.81″N 119°33′41.52″W / 35.7607806°N 119.5615333°W / 35.7607806; -119.5615333).[
I like it when he sneaks in that car and starts it up.
I never get tired of seeing this film. You feel like you are on a great adventure whenever it starts. Like Bond, Grant is a guy who always seems to know what to do.
I might also add that music that telegraphs to the audience the threat waiting just in the next field (cropduster) would blunt the shock of the first moments of the attack. The audience suspects this is some sort of set up. Hitch, as usual, leaves a hint of the man in the brown suit saying the cropduster isn't dusting any crops. Plot-wise, Grant's character has no reason to suspect Eve and thinks he's finally going to meet the mysterious George Kaplen.
I must say that you used the opening music very skillfully. This music was also used in Grants first escape earlier in the movie with being drunk in the Mercedes. The silence, as others have mentioned adds to the islolation of Grant's character. Also, the start of music right at the impact of the crop duster with the tank truck is a sort of an exclaimation on the action and a way to segue to the next scene in Chicago.
i liked this version with the music..... people will always say the original was the best, and i wouldn't want it any other way. but i liked this version.
From doing a sound course and studying hitchcock i can tell you he didnt use sound to create a feeling of isolation and fear. But damm thats a very good use of music for a film :D

you'd better learn that, Thornhill!

Yeah... like Hitchcock never thought of using music. Or maybe he just ran out of money. Good thing you saved the scene, man.

Amazing scene, too bad they actually blew up a plane to make it.

@paulmurphy42 Looked pretty convincing to me, but then again I'm usually not good at spotting bad visual effects.

The most dramatic scene of a fantastic film... but with one goof:
Why are the shots always fallen when the plane has passed by? What sense does it make to shoot behind you??
verwoerd 1 year ago
this is when planes were planes, buses were buses cars were fast and had no care about fuel consumption and men wore suits and ties to farm....

@findyouahome This is also when spies were spies, and if you caught one glimpse of a secret you'd actually die(unlike the WikiLeaks ordeal).

the music made this 10x as epic

@epic0nes Eh, I don't like it w/any music until the plane hits the truck. There was a reason why Hitch delayed any soundtrack until that moment.
