@zipsrule The uniforms aren't civil war. Half of the firearms used in this were never issued to troops during the civil war. (1861-1865). For example the Gentleman talking with the red trim on the collar, is wearing a "jacket" that has machine sewn buttonholes and is buttoned second button down. Looks nothing like anything a CS soldier would have worn, not even in the first month of the war. If you desire further information, we will need to know what specific examples you would like. :)
I think my next question would be phrased somethink like: what would have been the improvements, if any, of reenacting equipment by circa 1995 then circa 2005?
@zipsrule It really does more harm than good. And sets the stage for it to happen again. It seems "fun" to go drink a bunch of beer and pretend to be Union or Confederate, but does not help show that it was a horrible time and makes people think those who died were a bunch of morons. If that makes sense.
I think my next question would be phrased something like: what would have been the improvements, if any, of reenacting equipment by circa 1995 then circa 2005?
@zipsrule Correct material, patterns and adherence to the military manuals in drill that were used by each unit they are portraying ( scott's hardee's even von stuebens for that matter). Using the correctly issued firearms of the units they portray. All of this is readily available if one does research. I am not knocking them for doing what they do and having a good time, but it is like the ridley scott gettysburg fiasko that recently premiered. It was a bunch of guys running around shooting.
@zipsrule Like I said, it seemed way " hollywoodized " and among other things 3/4 of the narration was completely wrong. Bunch of guys running around with guns. I stick to that statement.
@zipsrule Oh, and also, Just for the record so you don't go apeshit about the civil war, I am a union re-enactor. So it has nothing to do with pro or anti confederacy. Nevermind the union got to keep their slaves LOL. They need to stick to films that involve black hawks down however.
@larsjakeThe Iron Brigade was made up of the following units: 2nd Wisconsin, 6th Wisconsin, 7th Wisconsin, 19th Indiana, and 24th Michigan under the command of Brig. Gen. Meredith at Gettysburg (Col. Robinson.)
@zipsrule Very good. Wikipedia still works. What is your point? About everything. Are you trying to prove/disprove something? Your initial question was about the authenticity of the uniforms and firearms. Also, you may not know this but the crossed rifles on the Iron Bde hats and caps, issued in the 1870's. If you need references for something let me know. Otherwise, come out with it. I guarantee results.
@zipsrule Actually, are you reading a very old book? Brass shines, becomes a target. By gettysburg very few had the INFANTRY designation piece on their hats. They were soldiers, not clowns. red circle. meaning what corps?
@zipsrule Right, but I specialize in the units and politics as well as issued uniforms and equipment. And a hobby is the school of the soldier as in the different books they used for tactics on a regimental to division level. So not asking specific questions can make it disconcerting. What do you want to know?
@larsjake I was wondering, for example, what improvements in reenacting took place between say 1995 and 2005 and what improvements if any could be envisioned from 2005 to 2015?
@zipsrule Well, I told you the first. But If you would like to know, Correct cloth weight. correct usage of accoutrements. Correct patterns. Correct buttons etc.... they are out there in droves in the east . What exactly is your point? Are you writing an article? For example. I saw a richmond depot beautifully handsewn today, but the cloth was way to heavy. it was blanket cloth. Learn the military drill. Are you starting your own unit or something? Would like some answers from you as well!
@larsjake No I am not in or starting a unit, I don't have the funds. I have a passing interest/knowledge in WWI, ACW, ARW etc... and was just curious to get a reenactors point of view on reenacting. Also, I am brushing up a little on ancient Rome.
@zipsrule LOL over three depending on who you were, you ask many questions. Also, I do British infantry for revy. Why don't you spout some knowledge at me on that one dawg? (74th royal reg't) :)
@zipsrule LOL, ok I'm sick of non sequiturs on your part. You seem to just read the first sentence on wiki. What color regimental was the 23rd of foot issued in 1780? and cite color of lace, pewter or brass buttons and the shoes, what type of shoe was it? Were they issued slops or breeches? Were they issued 2nd or 3rd land patterns? That ought to sort the dipshit from the historian. :) I believe you have many more questions to answer if you view our entire conversation. :)
@larsjake First, I never claimed to be a historian, if you have read any of my comments I have never claimed to have more than a passing knowledge in any but a few periods of history. Also I have not used Wiki for any of my comments or responses. You need to calm down and not get so upset so easily. This is supposed to be a friendly forum, no? I have never questioned your vast knowledge or superior intellect, should I?
@larsjake Second, the 23rd Welch Fus. wore blue facings and gold lace. I am not familiar with the shoes etc... but even if I did I suspect that you would still be upset about some lack of knowledge on my part.
@zipsrule Third, I am not certain that detailed knowledge of uniforms and weapons are the only qualifications for being a knowledgeable historian. True, the video is about reenacting and much of our discussion has revolved around the like. However, your claim about dipshits and history is a bit off the mark as you equate historical archival and living history knowledge as being the only or perhaps best form of history; there are others.
@zipsrule Aaaand, lol the 74th has a weird history, It was known under many names before the what is known as the 74th. I am not arguing with you at all but your questions do not follow any train of thought. We went from cali reenactors and their uniforms to discussing the evolution of some of britains elite regt's. I have no problem talking about either one, but you should frame your questions in the form of a question. Again I am not an expert, I know what I know, I say "I don't know" if not.
@larsjake Fourth, some or all of my comments seem to have srtuck a chord with you. I am sorry for that but you seem to be a little over sensitive. If I were you I would not be so insecure. Perhaps you just need to be recognized for your greatness. Anyway, I apologize for offending you. So can we continue with a civiliszed dialogue or not.
@larsjake Last, I really am interested in the reenacting that you and others do. However, it is only a passing interest. The recreation of the 74th seems interesting; I assume thats a Highland unit created during the Rev War? Anyway, good luck and thanks!
@zipsrule No, I was not being sensitive. I would ask what you would like to know and you would respond with random fact that had nothing to do with the conversation at hand. Who is being a bit touchy here? All I asked was for a straightforward answer and get accused of being offended. I never said I was the paragon of an historian. I know what I know. Again, you would respond to my answers with fact found easily in a book. We did not have a conversation.
@zipsrule You also said you were only getting a reenactors point of view. Why would you not ask specific questions then? Let me turn it around on you. Here is a question; You say you are interested in reenacting ARW, that means the american revolutionary war, right? Was George Washington was a general in that war?
Ok? It made no sense why you were asking. And the 23rd on empire total war is not the correct uniform :)
@zipsrule Oh, sorry, didn't know you were that insecure, kid. I must have struck a chord with you! I was speaking strictly on an emotional and maturity basis. Not linear age. Good luck with your studies! All the best!
@zipsrule There are those that stay in a camper and those that dig a hole in the ground with a fork and stay that way for the event. LOL it is a broad hobby
@larsjake You know, I am less interested in the actuall reenacting itself and more interested in the military periods. However, I have been to some reenactments. Like anything else you get out of them what you are willing to put in. Perhaps this is true of both a participant and a spectator?
@zipsrule That is true, I spent a few years CW reenacting and never watched one. thought it was great, then I went with a friend to a decent one and was a little disappointed as a spectator. They Revy war is the best as far as I am concerned. Or & years war, they are manageable. When you get CW or Napoleonic they are so big it is impressive but alot of guys standing around.
@larsjake Correct me if I am wrong, but I think ACW attracts more "FARB" than lets say Brit. ARW. Pardon me for using a term that I really have no qualifications for using. Anyway, I figure anyone who is commited to being the bad guy has decent motivation for getting it right. Just my unqualified opinion.
@zipsrule HAHA where did you hear that word? Owell, Yeah, because CW is MOSTLY easy now. Revy war, especially brit is done mainly by us americans, 3000 men from britain aren't going to fly with firearms( especially in england) to do evey little event. CW has become the mainstream. Unfortunately ridley scott didn;t realize that thousand of them would do his movie FOR FREE.
@larsjake What I found interesting was you original remark about how the video looked "1985." Here I just thought that any improvements made over the 1960s were big enough to last. It never occured to me that reenacting had a long and varie historiography of its own. Facinating. Perhaps someone could do a reenactment of a reenactment. LOL.
@zipsrule LOL. THe best way to put it is CWR is at the best on the eastern seaboard and the south. Everyone else gets the remnants. Everyone is trying to make money. The better uniforms and impressions cost $1000 upwards, a cheap one is $400. with musket. It all depends on what you want to do. I do not fault someone for being enthusiastic aboout it, but they usually upgrade frequently. It is the dumbing down of our history that kills me! BTW revy war is $1500 minimum to start.
@larsjake Commenting on accuracy, I believe the "local" chapter of the 8th Regt. get used uniforms (from Fort Niagra maybe?) to demonstrate a more worn (accurate?) appearence.
@zipsrule Ah, I am not in that unit, but sometimes NPS is the provider for a lot of things. The uniforms are old. But the 8th out of NY as I know them are good guys.
@zipsrule No not really, CW was just closer to heart at that point (100 yrs). Sort of like now with the 150 year thing for CW. However, Revy was done much more accurately during the bicentennial. I was not alive at that point but it just was done better. Also, you had to be a gentleman instead of CW you were jsut a soldier.
@larsjake I want to politely ask about your "gentleman" statement. Why would someone have to be a gentleman to portray a common Brit. soldier. I am not asking to be argumentitive, just curious to examine concepts of social hierarchy within reenacting and in the original historic context.
@zipsrule Think about the time period. A brit private has his entire family with him, in camp and watching them fight. It is a mini country the brit army. The cohesion of the army depends on polite society and everyone knowing their place. What else is a gentleman? LOL
@larsjake Of course a contemporary private would not have been considered a gentleman by his "peers" or his social "superiors." Wasn't that part of the elite social construct that Wellington exemplified?
@zipsrule Actually, what would help is telling me exactly what it is you are interested in, reenacting has many layers, it just depends on what you want to do, There are some that wear t shirts of the army color and have a borderline cap gun and call themselves reenactors, and there are those that want to use real ammo LOL
A good meaning bunch of guys - however if you are over 45 please stay off the field - I retired (from reenacting) for that reason - if you mean what you say then live by that code and portray the war correctly.
actually in the civil war the southerns thought if they could fight no mater age they did so yeah can i sign up for the scv if none of my ancestors fought in the war (wasnt civil war)
I reenact in Oregon and I know people in their 50's and 60's who reenact and it doesn't bother anyone and their doing just fine. I may not be "correct" but they love it and no one cares. so why should be be a big deal? why should they stop cause they're a little older? who's going to tell them to stop? you? go ahead. try I dare you.
HMMM..California huh? ya'll boys need to come to the south, grab your knapsacks and let the 26th NCT show you how to drill in the field.

@zipsrule Yes. So then we go back to your initial question. What was your issue with my critique of the uniforms and equipment of the CA reenactors?

@larsjake I didn't have an issue with your critique, I was looking for an informed opinion from someone who knows more about the subject than I do.
