I like the direction Sophie takes this song, and she gives the recording a "Joplin" approach whenever it's appropriate, without overdoing it. But while the conga drums don't seem out-of-place with the rest of the song, they certainly sound out-of-rhythm, as if they were recorded separately, then dubbed in after all the other layers of the song were added. As a result, it - IMO - doesn't quite gel as a whole. :-(
It's awesome to be seeing and hearing new music from you again, Sophie! Really looking forward to seeing you at the Tin Angel in Philly again in March--can't wait! (Oh, and remember that if you and Gigi want a Starbucks while there, the Starbucks closes at 9--as I found out when I tried to go get you some drinks when I last saw you at Tin Angel!) Cheers!
I was expecting some kind of copy of the Nina Simone's performance but this one is even better! It's still Sinnerman but more melodic and somehow more disquieting. Thanks!
Long time fan, but Eh I have to be honest, it's mixed and all over the place, it might go well with other songs on the album but as a single kinda hard to see where it's going. But I'll reserve final opinion after I hear it 50 more times, as First hearing always seems to be shaky.
This song is AMAZING. Your version is so good Sophie!!! It runs thru every vein in my body. Wow!!

Fabulous cover!
It reminds me of the cover of Bob Dylan's 'I Want You' (from Tongues & Tails) classic song but with SBH's personal twist.
