I saw the "REAL" Genesis at the Shrine Auditorium in L.A. in 1975 shortly before Gabriel departed.....the only thing I can remember (since I was trippin on 4-way Windowpane) was how theatrical the whole performance was with Gabriel dressed up as the Slipperman. What a trip! They did the whole Lamb Lies Down plus a bunch of older stuff including this one. Sweet!!!
I just like their progressive rock era much better than their mainstream, pop era. I respect it, I do enjoy some of their songs, but I find the progressive music was so much more interesting. That's just my opinion
@MTLguitarist98 Man, Genesis is bigger than Peter...Phil was the most talented member across the years. And Hackett was the responsible musician for the art rock era, when he left, Genesis changed his style.
I am the only true Genesis fan here, as I am able to appreciate everything in their career. The rest of you can wallow in your Gabriel... I listen to the real Genesis: ALL OF IT.

The best of their songs, and the music is so tight... much of the time it fools me into thinking it's the album. The mixture of all these creative people. What I would really love is a video showing how their early songs came together. But we'll never see that, alas. Gotta say, Gabriel scares me a little though...
isto foi em 1973, 2 anos apos , Peter Gabriel saira do Genesis e me deixara inconsolável no maracanasinho assistindo genesis tocar com phill colins nos vocais....quanta diferença....
I'm still a sucker for this early stuff. It isn't the costume stuff, either. The band is off the hook. Banks ability to sustain those agonizing progressions, Hackett's innovation and absurd composition, Rutherfords multi talent and undervalued work, but Collins is the one that floored me. Changed my approach to the tubs altogether.
Incredible - Gabriel is obviously the focal point and it makes me realise even more it was pointless without him - they were all incredible players and Gabriel was a great singer/mover/entertainer - I just wish the band would see this - Collins was on some radio show not so long back playing his favourite songs - and they were all Motown! - it's common knowledge he used to follow Yes - why didn't he say - oh fuck this - got any early Yes? - the DJ would have shit himself.
Great song...great music...great band...great Peter......one of the best and happy moment in Genesis history..and an important music legacy for the new generations that listen to...Lady Gaga.........

I was going to change the world, just like my heros, but sadly time and tide take its toll and the young man crumbles under the weight of living and conforming and working for the man. How I wish I was 14 once more.......
When I first listened Foxtrott in the middle of the eighties I was amazed. All those years I search at movies and live concerts - and now, a lot of times later, there all the gems online..
I love intelligent theatre rock, and lyrics, that blow your mind, genesis were amazing with gabriel,he is still the prototype of an artist in this century,a very talented, gifted allrounder,i never saw again such an unique performer...i collected the old material, musically they were like mozart for me,classic, jazz, metal, blues, psyche, folk, they couldplay it all, guitar and organ was played astonishing, fast, clear, like knives cutting bread, haha!
@NsmiguelCOD I was in in 1973 and I still get back from time to time. This reminds me that inside I am still 14 and not middle aged now. How I miss these masterpieces from Peter Gabriel's Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Camel, etc etc
@arbraulin So, if you're really questioning ;D As I like to call the Genesis with Peter Gabriel and the Genesis Trio having Phil Collins as Singer, The genesis trio did songs like mama, that's all, home by the sea, and the peter gabriel genesis did lamb lies down on broadway, carpet crawlers, firth of fifth. ;D
I admit this is creepy but then it gets really funny what with Peter's dancing around and stuff but this is a wonderful song over all. I loved it! It's one of the best ones from the peak of Genesis' career before Peter's leave of absence.
those last few minutes ("as sure as eggs is eggs") still raise the hair on the back of my neck, even after owning the album for over 35 years. the only other work that does that for me is the 1812 Overture
funny, it isn't much to watch, but I couldn't take my eyes off, it is such a timeless and emotional work of music. only saw them one, for the "Lamb" tour in the USA. always a fav group and buncha talents
I know a chap who was given tickets to see Peter Gabriel live in LA. He didn't particularly like his work but went anyway. He told me after that he was one of the best live performers he'd ever seen- there you go.

Absolutely enigmatic, bizarre, brilliant, unforgettable and quirky...this one song taking an entire side of an album (unheard of today) with an equally odd album cover of one of PG's personas...the fox headed figure in the red dress. Each part of this rambling song sticks in one's head like flypaper....
He shaved that strip on the top of his head and now he's bald there. I bet he wishes he had every second with that hair he shaved, now that he doesn't have it anymore. The only one who could ever get away with these stage gimmicks is Gene Simmons, and only because he's cool to the bone. Paul Stanley was/is a helluva rocker, but he looked stupid. Gabriel, 3/4 of Kiss, Ziggy Stardust, anybody I'm forgetting, clowns all. Ooh, Alice Cooper's good. Hate his hits, like his non-hits, he looked cool.
I can't imagine what was going through their heads when they wrote this unparalleled masterpiece. Some people these days try too hard to be "crazy/weird" in a cool way and others try to be "cool" and just end up looking stupid. Gabriel doesn't need to try. He can be weird and cool and badass and instantly become the biggest visual spectacle phenomenon. All in one song. He's a one-of-a-kind guaranteed eternal visionary man.
This is incredible!!!! Thank you for posting this. It blows my mind how few people know that Gabriel was the first lead singer. He was a show in his own right. Nobody was doing this w/ prog. The band of course is fantastic but I could see how Gabriel's presence could overshadow the rest of the group. I love all phases of Genesis. They were brilliant to be able to change w/ the times.
@rt2112 Absolutely agree Gabriel was a superb showman and hard act to follow for Collins, though in the early days I felt he did really well. Watching Hackett with the joke porno moustache and the clothes they are all wearing makes me feel old and reminds me of the cover art on Rush's 2112; I take it from your id that you are familiar with this ;-)
I saw Peter Gabriel in Santa Barbara, CA. in 1979 or 80 at a little theatre- one of the best concerts ever...amazing stuff.. pure creative genius!! <3
I have to admit I like Phil's version from the 80s cuz he could hit and sustain the high notes, and the lighting techniques with Varilites gave the ending to this majestic piece more power and emotion. it was some of the best most emotional prog rock i experienced.
The best progressive band ever. The first show i saw when i was 17 at The Montreal Forum for the Lamb Lies Down tour, in '74 and still remember it like yesterday.
Funny, @21:36 what the lyrics are regarding 2012, I call this visionnary.
Nothing short of incredible. I've been a fan of Genesis for 35 years and this is giving me the chills. Peter was quite the character along with being brilliant. I'd love to find some stuff off the" Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" of this quality. That 2 album set is a masterpiece just as this song is. This is crazy good!!
simply incredible.......no words, wish i knew about this when i was in my teen age years, but at list we are left with these clips now and forever, treasure , thx so much for posting this magnificent pure art!! Love everything this band did in the early times.
The first Band I ever saw live, at the Luton Technical college supporting Rory Gallagher who was recording Live in Europe, must of been about 12 or 13.
stealing "seconds out" as a teen, re-discovering it in college, 25 yrs. later, i'm not sure of the lyrics, but @23:22 forward it's been an unconsious anthom, and it's come full circle...
Thank the Gods we have this 'live' version of 'Supper' from Shepperton. The song is taken to a higher level with Pete's antics and costume changes. The subtle lighting effects have so much more atmosphere than the barrage of lighting used in concerts today.... A classic!
I can only echo what everyone else said. I saw the show in Birmingham, Was it really 73?!! Great to see it all in one, Still No 1 on my desert island discs!
Thanks for posting this great videos! I remember the hard winter in 1983 when I listened many days and nights ,the music made up by Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull and so on. The Giants of Rock Music. Thank You from Bucharest. A Happy New Year for all members of this forum!

I made a decision that if one day Doc Brown came up to my door and said: "PETER! I've got the time machine right here, we could go to any time, any place you'd like. Where would you like to go?" and I would reply "Ok, how about September 1972 so I can follow Genesis on their Foxtrot tour." and I'd imagine he would reply "but you could see the fall of the Roman Empire, a Shakesphere play, the sinking of the Titanic!" and I would say "Nope, Genesis. And JT's TaaB tour."
@peteyification "The high office of the President has been used to foment a plot to destroy the American's freedom and before I leave office, I must inform the citizen of this plight."

I have to admit I like Phil's version from the 80s cuz he could hit and sustain the high notes, and the lighting techniques with Varilites gave the ending to this majestic piece more power and emotion. it was some of the best most emotional prog rock i experienced.

Wow.

The first Band I ever saw live, at the Luton Technical college supporting Rory Gallagher who was recording Live in Europe, must of been about 12 or 13.

Thank the Gods we have this 'live' version of 'Supper' from Shepperton. The song is taken to a higher level with Pete's antics and costume changes. The subtle lighting effects have so much more atmosphere than the barrage of lighting used in concerts today.... A classic!
