@FuzzBugify Besides he had a strong interest in civil rights + social justice and wrote protest songs later in his career. You couldn't be more wrong with your comment.
@FuzzBugify Well, I don't see him "happy" here. The fact that he swings the song doesn't mean he doesn't take it serious! He's not Sinatra. Listen to black gospel (Harry Belafonte's version of Oh Freedom for example). Though the lyrics are about their daily torture and about death, the melodies are often happy. They are cheering and swinging the songs. Feeling a little bit of happiness was the whole reason why the slaves sang their gospels in the fields, if you will.
@thesocialpet I THINK this record is from the same day as the one of "I'm on my way". Same clothes, camera movement, lights are similar, same make up (and yes he’s wearing tons of it). Someone mentioned that particular record being made very shortly after Kennedy died, so if I am right and the information about this being a little after JFK's murder is correct, then it is late November to early December 1963. But I could be wrong.
@Rahqui Yes, it is the same day as "I'm On My Way". :-) This episode of the Judy Garland Show was aired on December 29, 1963. "Michael Row..." was recorded on September 3, 1963 and released in November.
Has anyone ever noticed that he is directing choir and band with his hand and arm movements? Subtil but precise. At first I wondered about his constant arm raising and hand flexing but then I took a closer look at the what happens when he makes a certain movement. A genius indite!
I've heard Bobby Darin sing a dozen times, but I've never actually WATCHED him until now--and I couldn't take my eyes off of him. He gave me chills. He's amazing.
Amazing! First of all, it's Judy Garland introducing him! Second, it's a completely different, but no less wonderful version of a great song. Wow what energy and intensity! I need to explore Darin's music more fully. I, at least, know that he made famous another one of my favorite songs "If I was a Carpenter." But I have to delve deeper.
@macklee49 You are in for a some wonderful discoveries! Bear in mind when looking and listening how young he was at all these stages - 22 when he did Mack the Knife!
Future History, why not. Ever thought, why vote for a politician?
You know if you were at a parade standing in the crowd. By sound alone, you'd know the marching band was just down the road and after that you heard the cloppity clops on horses. Sort of future history you might say. Now, imagine God (Yahweh) above seeing the entire parade, start to finish. He knows how it all ends with the janitor cleaning up our mess you might say.
This song is so f***ing great! We use to sing this in the school and we changed for the football(soccer) songs in the stadium."We are gonna winn the game, fuuuuck you!" I would`t sing it today, but it was a great lough. Great song!
dreadfull, its missing the screaching banshees its like a halloween party trick. (typical americans trying to make a song better and failing to do so)
@MrPfund You need to check out other clips... especially Beyond the Sea on the Ed Sullivan Show 1960. Elvis the Pelvis got NOTHIN' on this guy - you'll see what I mean! The cameraman had to move the shot UP! Take a look!
This man had a brilliance and an intensity that far transcended the generation within he lived. I can't think of anyone who was anything like him, then or now.
Are you guys NUTS?!? Bobby Darin was great, but he really BUTCHERED this one! This is the worst thing I ever saw him do. How DARE he improvise like that. Shame on him!
You might say he showed the 'Dare' in Darin. I agree it's a 'shocker' after hearing the original. One could suppose he had little regard for folk music except that he did perform "If I Were a Carpenter'(believe he wrote it, too). I think Bobby was best described as 'eclectic' and he liked to display his versatility; I also prefer the Highwaymen's original version.
@iotbs6 Two brilliant folk albums way before Carpenter (they were in 62 and 63; Carpenter in 66). Hardin wrote it; Darin wrote Simple Song of Freedom in 69 and gave it to Hardin, which was his only hit. Check out the early folk stuff to see just how much regard he had, not only for folk, but for other ethnic traditions.
IS HE DRUNK!!!!!!!

@LegendPoloboy Could you sing like that if you were drunk? LOL... In my dreams, maybe. cheers

He was drunk, and "Michael Row The Boat Ashore" is supposed to be a working slve song. so this is shaming the slaves of the past.
