  • It looks impressive and it is. But the methods he uses are not that difficult. If you are interested in this kind of stuff you should get his book: Secrets of Mental Math. I've been studying that book and I can do all the calculations that he does... he does them 10 times faster than I do tho :p

  • I was happy with an 100% in my Calculus III class!

  • DAYUM.

  • He's like a computer! Thinks like a computer; has lots of algorithms stored in his memory lol.

  • I'm not a magician, I'm a MATHemagician!

  • Dang it takes me at least 2-3 min to calculate a problem >.> wish i was him pure math pawnage :D

  • He's the next einstien

  • please pull your calculator and type. 722x722 you'll get 521,248 and he said 513,284... All the calculators in the world are wrong this guy is a genius. ROFL, OMG, WTF, LOL, ROFLCOPTER, ROFLCRAFT, WTFCLOUDs, ROFLTRAIN, LOLS-ROYCE, LOLLERCOASTER, LOLLERCAUST, LOLYMPICS, LOLLERSKATES,!!!!!!111!!!11one!!!1

  • @encuentrosenelparque --You will actually get 521, 284.

  • This is very easy one. He has a partner in the audience with a calculator. In his right ear he has a transmitter and a receiver. He gets the answers from his partner. Its hard to tell, who he is. The ending with the five digit square, he just puts a show and makes it look like he does the math. David Copperfield had a similar trick 10 years ago in Vegas, but he took it of his show because people guessed it how he did it. People knew him as a magician, and not mathematician.

  • @RobRealestate I've taken his course, man, it's actually legit. He's just so good at it that he can rapidly calculate the answers, as opposed to amateurs like myself who have to take a little time to perform the mental calculations ;)

  • @RobRealestate how do you explain him going to a very good school (John Hopkins university) and he being a professor in math at Harvey Mudd???????????

  • smarter thn smart

  • iimmpppoosssiiibruuu!!

  • wow

  • he is a combinatorics guru.

  • The more TED videos I watch, the more stupid I realize I am.

  • Haha this guy is great.

  • when he got that last problem right I almost spooged in my pants.

  • this is amazing lol

  • @bangalorebully The world has become so gay that everyone is gay now?

  • @bangalorebully except you focused on what you might think his sexual orientation might be first....

  • I had to mute it at 14:00 cuz he was hurting my brain

  • wish I can borrow his brain.. and I dont have to fail math again!!!

  • i swear when he said at 1:10 a two digit number in my head i've said 22 and then that bitch said the same number !!!!!! mind reading bitch..

  • @fsfsto Me too! Sick...

  • shut up you idiots. can you just respect this person? oh and @iRoNtEhFiSh dont be a fool people knew the daily program that it consisted of maths. get a life.

  • 722 squared is 521284 GET OFF THE STAGE

  • I don't like watching this... I don't feel very Asian anymore... Jk, This is impressive :D

  • Why he sound funny?

  • a true mathalete

  • 3:40, 457^2 is actually 208849, not 205849.

  • @Parthematics Yeah but he does say each digit individually afterwards and he says 8 and not 5 if you listen closely.

  • @Parthematics He just missed when spelling out the digits, he had it right the first time.

  • Utterly incredible

  • i can't even plus 8+6 without thinking for a minute

  • @BoostedDubstep go to elementary school

  • @BoostedDubstep Thats probably because you listen to Dubstep, it just fecks up brains :/

  • This guy is my math teacher at Mudd. He's awesome.

  • @04:00 also wrong.

    but he's still very good.

  • @03:40 FAIL!!!

  • 4:58 looks like it hurts

  • I played truant in all classes in Discrete Maths in college. Finally I needed help, it was Mr Benjamin's lectures that bailed me out..I AM GLAD THAT I WAS INITIATED TO THE SUBJECT BY SOMEONE LIKE MR BENJAMIN RATHER THAN THE MORBID LOSERS WHO WERE PROFESSORS IN MY COLLEGE!!

  • When I first got a video series of this man on Discrete Maths, I dismissed him from the first few minutes of the very first lecture as a clown due to his informal, excited & childish demeanor. Then after I saw a him on a BBC Documentary I realized the "clown" is in fact a great prodigy!! I checked the lectures again & I realized how a great instructor he is & how much I owe to his lectures..Mr Benjamin, you are a FINE FELLOW & I feel like a fool for my initial impression of a great person as u.

  • this guy should be a special guest in The Big Bang Theory

  • At 03:43 457 square is 208849 and not 205849

  • @siddharthjain00 haha yeah, and at 04:02 722^2=521284 not 513284. Weird that the people with calculators keep saying yes though!!

  • I actually just bothered to read the rest of the comments and saw that people caught that already. my, my, such inquisitive viewers.

  • 240p we meet again

  • This guy must be great with phone numbers. Amazing!!

  • Although I typically frown strongly upon the typical math magic I've seen, I can't help but appreciate the work that this man does and the show that he puts on. Numbers are simple, and with practice, observation, and motivation, It's not surprising that this can be done. There are many unobserved patterns and unpopularized formulas that can make these calculations relatively simple. I am not surprised, and barely impressed, but I am very appreciative of the interest and practice behind it all.

  • 722 squared is 521284, not 513284...

Still though, amazing guy and presentation. One mistake just makes him human.

  • 722 ** 2 is 521284, but this was a very lively presentation.

  • At 4.00 he does a mistake the answer is 521284 dumbass

  • @downuk So.. you're calling him a dumbass?

  • arther is so banned from casino blackjack

  • Did he have NUMBERS on his bow tie and the thing on his waist? Definetly. Definetly.

  • I dont get how he does the trick at 5:45

I think that he might be using casting out nines in reverse or something like that but I cant figure out how it is done :(. Anyone?

  • @pabergg 8649 is a multiple of 9 (which he would have easily worked out because all the digits add up to a multiple of nine, and if you add those digits they equal nine). Multiplying this by any number will also give a multiple of nine (and the resulting number, when adding the digits together in the same way, will eventually give nine). So all he has to do, is quickly add the digits that they call out to him, and the remaining number will always be the difference to the next multiple of nine.

  • @joemediafilm

i think you are totally right

  • no the answer is 208849

    he said 205849

  • that's what she said

  • and he said 205849

  • 3.45

he got one wrong, 457 squared is 208849

  • @MsMethlab

ur right..... but they confirmed him to be right " the guys with calculators "

  • This is one amazing skill, but why put the effort into it when all you need is a calculator which everyone has on their phone nowadays? I guess it is good for show and entertainment?

  • @030Phatmatt Nevermind I commented way too earlier, after I saw that 5 digit one holy crap, that is one brain.

  • Comment removed

  • Always have a calculator handy. Well, with the exception of this guy of course.

  • The real question is why the fuck did so many people have calculaters on them?

  • @iRoNtEhFiSh Guess that's how folks at TED Talks roll. :)

  • @iRoNtEhFiSh have a smarthphone?

  • @iRoNtEhFiSh

Dont you have a calculator in your cellphone? =)

  • @iRoNtEhFiSh ever hear of a smart phone?

  • Comment removed

  • @iRoNtEhFiSh You do realize that the people who go to these conferences are massive nerds. Just be amazed they didn't have pocket protectors and broken glasses.

  • @iRoNtEhFiSh If you go to a performance at TED about Math you are probably someone that likes math, student, e.g. so it would be pretty natural to bring a calculator with you, especially if you wish to check if he is right or not. ;)

  • @iRoNtEhFiSh he gave it to them. watch the beginning of the video we gives another one to the first lady counting from the left

  • This guy was my maths teacher..

    5*3= 15 !

  • THE fuck!?

  • hes got balls

  • this is impressive

  • WHAT THE FUCK

  • I came here from TED.com so i can see if any geek was gonna tell us how he did this...

  • @anau006 There is a program for the iphone and its called "mathemagics" (also for mac).. there are a lot of hints there. :) have fun with it.. I'm trying to learn them all.. (not for doing a show tho)

  • @anau006 he wrote a book w/ all these secrets in it. It's called Secrets of Mental Math and it's an amazing read.

  • You can learn these patterns and contribute your own patterns to the field as well!

    /watch?v=Lfibw83uLAY

    decimology[dot]com

  • At 1:20 when he said for the second number I was thinking 47 and the guy said 47... thumbs up if this happened to you also, we might be onto something! :o

  • I also like cookies

  • Harvey Mudd ftw

  • To do tue trick where he guesses the missing digit in the 7 digit number, he adds up all the digits and takes them away from the closest division of nine above it e.g. 527485 (5+2+7+4+8+5=31 ( the closest division above it of nine is 36 so the missing number is 5) ) it works always if you multiply any 8 or 9 single digits together ! If you wanna know why either post a reply with @MrRubicon195 at the start and/or like this comment

  • i bought his book after this, its called "secrets of mental math" by arthur benjamin and michael shermer, i havent even put it down since

  • Was it a sunday?

    Yes it was!

    And it was cloudy!

    TEN DIGIT GUY!

    COOKIE!!!

  • 31 people suck at math

  • he cheats, it's someone who gives him the answer, pause 2:32, he has headphones

  • @Mossi420

All the fucking speakers have headphones...

  • @dudejohnny All speakers have headphones, i agree with you, but the difference is that he uses it to cheat

  • @Mossi420

    Citation needed.

  • @dudejohnny the clip above :)

  • @Mossi420

If you seriously believe that nobody can do maths in their head then you are very wrong.

  • @dudejohnny I know it is possible to count math in head, but he exaggerates

  • @Mossi420

I'm looking forward to when you prove that instead of just saying it.

  • @dudejohnny you prove that he doesn't cheat,

  • @Mossi420

Did you actually just ask me to prove a negative?

  • Comment removed

  • pure math genius.. funny too! hehe

  • I can do square in head pretty quick but have to say this guy is ruled!

  • This guy is a live DeepBlue supercomputer!

  • 722*722=521284 not 513284...

  • @GrandMaster2350

Oh he made an error or two, did he!? I guess that means... well it doesn't mean anything. Humans are fucking human.

  • @dudejohnny It means that the people with the calculators are twice as stupid...

  • He has devil inside, can't say more. He is such a beast!

  • But he got the hardest question right..... weird.

  • He actually got some wrong!!!! More around 4:00. But he was close

  • simple ! pffft !

  • ohh God I hate Math D:

  • @Fisail009 Then why'd u watch it?! 0_o

  • What a great mind!

  • beast

  • beasy

  • AMZING!! just unbelievable! My math teacher also impressed!

  • I'm think i'm ready to study for my math exam now..

  • NERD!!! (impressive though)

  • wow...... im simply impressed........

  • That's great, but his ear piece disturbs me and makes me think it's all fake. Anyway, a nice show

  • @maynard789 nah, it is not fake. He has a full tutorial on how to do them (published in 2005 or 04 I think). He just have a brilliant mind

  • Son of a...

  • What is Day 9?

  • Interestingly none of these tricks are actually that hard with practice. Not only that but Arthur Benjamin published how to do all of these tricks online in 2004 (google squaring three digit numbers, first result). Why does this man still have a job then? I guess showmanship truly is everything to the magician.

  • @heartybbq Well it's not like this is all he does. As a matter of fact, I'm not sure he does it much at all nowadays.

  • @TechVick true that, he's still a college professor of Math so I'm sure that keeps him busy enough

  • PETTRIFIED!!!!

  • ...just amazing

  • Day[9] made me do it.

  • Imagine this guy as your math teacher at Harvey Mudd.

    Day[J]!!

  • Holy shit wow, don't know what to say.

  • Day 9 is awesome

  • Day 9 made me do it...

  • DAY9!!!

  • It's the rain man!

  • "what year?"

    -1994

    "what month"

    -January

    "what date?"

    -28th

    "was that a monday?"

    -no.

  • I just got his book. I wish I had read it in high school.

  • what sort of person brings a calculator to the show?

  • Brain reduced to goo.

  • magician savant!!

  • Just don't say Fibonacci to this guy, sets him off lol

  • i read it and i can do 3 digit squares in *times self* 12.5 seconds lol.

im only 13 this dude is a freaking genius

  • when you like the show from Art, you must read his book. It´s brilliant^^

  • @WintiChris Can you tell me the name of the book? =)

  • @HrSverrir

    Mental Math magic

by Arthur Benjamin, Happy reading ^^

  • the second coming of jesus.

  • its outstanding i would like to be like arthur

  • And he's not even asian.

  • @mujtabahq LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL!!!!!!!

  • @mujtabahq lol

  • @mujtabahq Most mathematicians are not Asian but I do get what you mean. The top echelons in math are still dominated by Europeans and Americans, though Asians are certainly making inroads. People often make the mistake of equating the demographics that they see in university with the demographics of active professionals in the field, without understanding that these two areas differ very much.

  • @eIectrostatic It was a joke, but thanks for responding to a 3mo. old comment

  • arthur's so dreamy, those ladies couldn't contain their orgasms

  • when he asks if anybody can calculator only 4 people raise hands...what nonsense...i am sure everyone there had cellhpone....how dumb...i dont think there is any cellphone these days without calculator tool..

  • this guy performed at my school and he couldn't get the 5 digit multiplication... D:

  • effects of television and widespread internet access, more of us would be able to achieve mental feats like this. we are not stupid as a species, we are stupid individually.

  • no tie-in to real science. math and mnemonics have long been correlated. however, mnemonic devices have personal connections rather than universal ones. mathematics relies on instinctual processing of factual knowledge rather than instinctive processing of arbitrary association, which is what mnemonics does. what he is proving is that he can commit certain numbers to memory using devices that are widely practiced, but rarely mastered. this isn't magic, it's memory; and without the mind-numbing

  • I got his book last summer, but this is the first time I watch him perform. Fucking incredible.

  • i know how he did the one at 7:39! the sum of all the numbers the people on the panel said had to add up to 34. i got his book. he's really smart!

  • i got his book. it is a very good book

  • i wish he was my math teacher

  • A genius presentation!

  • showoff.
