My husband will be happy listening and seeing this video on You Tube. He's favorite choice are usually Armstrong- Fitzgerald and Goodman - Krupa duets. Thanks!
I first heard this song in the 60s on TV, when a comedy team called Skiles and Henderson did it. One of them "played" drums through making drum sounds with his mouth, while the other whistled the melody, as the bass player here is. It took me about 20 years after that to find out the name of the piece, then until YouTube to hear (and see) it performed right.
When I started learning drums 1955 ish I remember reading that a drummers job was to keep time, and the saying was, THAT A DRUMMER MUST BE FELT, BUT NOT HEARD. and I would go along with that.
This here,is pure poetry. Just look at how these two musicians perfectly flow togheter. Both drums and bass are played skilfully and with lot of enthusiasm and soul. Amazimg what emotions human beings can build with music. Hats off!!!!
Correction: What you do call the life blood and soul of any excellent band/ orchestra? THE PERCUSSIONISTS! What happened to you - a percussion player embarrassed you (probably deservedly) one day? Are you jealous that you can't do what 1/20 of what a percussion player can do? Don't forget - your heart doesn't sound like a violin or a trumpet or a clarinet. IT SOUNDS LIKE A DRUM! And when that drum stops beating, boy are you in trouble!
I just heard Ray Bauduc on a recording from 1935 with Bunny Berigan and was astonished to discover that the drummer had a funky New Orleans vibe. I need to hear more of this guy, because this clip is amazing.
I agree. It amazes me every time I come across film of these drummers, especially when I haven't seen film of them before, to see how skilled and individualistic they were. Even the 'second and third tier' drummers were amazing.
Understand what you are saying but Ray Bauduc was one of the top drummers of his day. Buddy and Gene had him in their top 3 or 4. Jo Jones, Chick Webb, Sid Catlett the others.
I'm not sure if everyone knows how the history of the tune. A big band had a gig in the town of Winnetka, but the band failed to show up except the drummer & the bassist who went there ahead. In order to stall & not lose their gig, the 2 men in this video wrote this tune in desperation on a table napkin & then performed it. By the time the band DID show up, these two had the audience totally captivated for more than an hour & it's been a favorite showpiece ever since.
Ray Bauduc...wow..once again,what a touch to the drums,oh man.So relaxed,so groovy,so musical!And WHAT a song,good old Big noise...
Yeah baby!!!
What is wrong with modern drummers, they are so STIFF!Neil peart and all these rock and metal drummers..even ones i like, they are like they have no groove. They have tricks and they rely on those. They play fast, whopee.
One route is to have an gigant drumset and just hit everything is sight.Discrace in my eyes, personally.Sorry if this upsets someone.
They're very good. I favor Bette Midler's version though.

Does anyone know which year this clip was originally filmed? Bob looks really young.

it was first recorded around 1938
so this film could be anytime between then and maybe the early 50s.

was such a musical drummer. This is so
priceless! Thanx for posting!

Tell me about it! It never ceases to amaze me how few drummers I meet today realize they actually have to TUNE their drums before they play 'em!!!
Hellkattus 2 years ago 2
People always ask What do you call a guy who hangs around with musicians? A drummer.
Drummers forget that they are actually musicians and not there just to make a loud noise.Watch Gene Krupa and learn boys.

Senator,I think you've just made my point from a different direction.I was trying to make a distinction between someone who beats time and
a "musician drummer"eg Krupa who embroiders and welds together all other elements.Good news is we're both on the same side.Good Luck my friend!!
BelleVue1969 2 years ago 2
Good enough, BelleVue. Take care - and keep enjoying the music - especially the percussionists!

Wonder how this film was presented when it was new. No MTV in that time, or web... Maybe as a trailer for "gone with the wind"...
But it must have been a huge hit in those days. When the radio was like new...
