Pop is different for each decade really. A lot of pop is horrible, horrible music, with a catchy beat. But sometimes, a pop band is able to grow and actually turns out to be a group of excellent musicians. Examples include the who, the rolling stones, the beatles, and U2. Examples of the opposite include britney spears.
Ha! @superlou1s You're confused. In rock, the musicians write, record and perform live their songs by playing instruments.
In pop, studio musicians write and record the music, The pop idol attempts to sing. Pop performers lip sync live.
The Who, Stones and U2 are rock. Britney Spears is pop. It can be debated if the Beatles were rock since both studio musicians played on their behalf on many recordings.
@superlou1s Ha! It is true that the word "pop" derives from the phrase 'popular music'. That said, it means what I said it means. You would need to learn about the history of the recording industry to know this.
In Rock Music, the performers are the musicians who wrote their own material.
In Pop Music, the performers are singers who perform the material of others and are backed by trained musicians.
In short, Pop Music is corporate, packaged music. Rock music is not.
@TruthAxe Your assumptions about the definitions of pop and rock music are completely wrong. Rock music is named after "rock and roll" - a branch of pop.
I have worked in the music industry for twenty years and now write about music for major global publications.
Before making arrogant mistaken pronouncements, check your facts first.
In contemporary (popular) music, there exists rock music and pop music. Rock music has musicians who write, record and perform their music both in studio and live. Pop music has professional musicians write, record and perform the music in studio, all of which is a vehicle for a star.
The stage star lays down an audio track doctored by auto-tune. When live performances arise, the star lip syncs to a recording or backed by touring musicians.
@TruthAxe As a studio engineer, I thought it'd be gracious of me to inform you that you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
I know that there's a hopelessly large chance that this fact won't register with you, but I thought I might repeat myself just in case you're open to ideas that contradict your held beliefs.
Ah, I see @fu6azi. As a knob-twiddling technician, you're trained to do whatever you're told. Marketing executives decide what happens and are responsible. Think of us as your daddies and why you get an allowance (pay check) for doing your chores (job).
I don't thing so, I know this is a master piece but you can't say 100 times better, Joshua Tree is terrific and a master piece too.. so I give you just 1 time as much ! at the end, we have two fantastic albums to enjoy isn't it?
Rock music is not packaged? Everything for the public is packaged. Even the "news" is packaged. How naive can we be? U2 is one of the greatest.

U2 are horrible. They regressed through time.

You amuse, @seroto9.
Working as the janitor in the building that has a record company doesn't make you expert.
In Rock Music, the performers are the musicians who write their own material.
In Pop Music, the performers are auto-tuned singers who perform material written by others. Trained musicians provide the music.

Achtung Baby and Joshua Tree are actually awesome albums, but does anyone count How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb as one of them?
418208fish 2 years ago
Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby could quite easily be by two different bands. Both are excellent.

Achtung Baby, the best album U2 has ever made. Enuff said.
