  • 1-10-2012. It's no bore. Donald is 64. Happy Birthday, DF. And to you wanna-be's of today: This is how it's done.

  • Anyone else struggle to sleep at night without some STEELY DAN ! ??

  • The late Cornelius Bumpus is playing sax, back left.

  • Couric acted like a complete imbecile, which actually played in her favor as Fagen has been known to get very unpleasant in some interview situations. The guy is brilliant but he lives on another planet.

  • Dude... that 17 years was worth the wait. Two Against Nature is a KILLING album!!

  • Outstanding..... Brought back a flood of warm youthful memories, while at the same time this wasa damn fine performance!

  • That was one of the best performances you'll ever see on the show. It's amazing when you put good musicians together, you get good music. Then we have to sit through shit like Jennifer Lopez and/or Hanson :-0

  • They're missing Michael McDonald on vocals.....this is good, but he really makes the song!

  • Micheal McDonald by himself has better backing vocals than those ladies.

  • @ONLY1PEA YES YES YES YES YES! Man FINALLY I thought that I was the only one after listening to all these clips of different background singers singing PEG the background singers are hurting me! I have always made it a point as a background singer to study what WORKS and Michael McDonald's backgrounds (he did all the parts sigh) WORK!

  • @MegaMaryThomas U R absolutely right. I take it you've seen the vid of the making of PEG. Very revealing!!!

  • @MegaMaryThomas remember Claudia Lennear and Cathy McDonald...They were amazing back up singers

  • better with age...

  • that my friends is talent! No autotune, no miming, just talent. RIP Cornelius, and thank you

  • cornelius bumpus rip brother

  • .....This one concealed as a joke.....Katie Lied.....

  • WALTER BECKER ATE MY GFs BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jon Herington on guitar kicking arse, RIP Cornelius

  • Awesome, love these guys. Amazing tunes & talent. THANKS =)

  • They had 17 years to think about '' Two Against Nature '' ...and It shows ! Quality music is Done '' Thorough '' ! LOL

  • good god .... shutup katie

  • 1:40 for those that aren't interested in what Katie Couric has to say.

  • @Antiks72 Thank you! haha

  • Gotta agree with the comments about this reporter...

Did she think Becker was kidding when he said that waited 20 years because they wanted to be thorough? I love it how she turns to Fagen to confirm this ... what an idiot.

Assign somebody who knows music to the event... I mean, it's not like this is some student marching band.

YOU SHALL KNEEL BEFORE THE DAN!

  • Gee Katie, maybe they should have "updated" their sound for this album.... Christ, what an idiot.

  • R.I.P. Cornelius Bumpus

  • She could have pretended she knew the song.

  • its obvious katie doesn't know a thing about them... they sound sick though

  • Let the band have it! Smokin!!

  • i see mr. bumpus in the mix..good shit

  • Katie ain't got enuff to lick the Dan's boots.

  • I would nail that Katie.....

  • To say that "Katie is clueless" does not even come close! I wouild have loved to see the great Jay Graydon do that solo but Jon Herington nails it on the outro...Rest in peace, Mr. Bumpus...

    Peace To All...

  • Saw them in Milwaukee last week... Unbelievable show, the Royal Scam LP followed by "selections from our illustrious career" (Fagan's comment) and it was the definitive Dan show. I LOVED it! Every masterfully played note!

  • katie is freaking clueless.

  • not.

  • Steely Dan is one of my all-time fave bands ever. Would give my left #%@^& to see them perform live!!

  • my man cornelius in the horn section. that cat was one of a kind. ms couric(know ur music before you interview legends)

  • Comment removed

  • love the groupies....shame they didn't get Mike McDonald down too

  • One of the best fuckin songs ever!!!

  • Excellent performance. Pity the editor wasn't able to show more of the lead guitarist in this clip.

  • jon seems to always get screwed in their vids until like 2006

  • I don't feel I'm missing much by not seeing him though.

It's hard to hide the fact I'm a Larry fan. :)

  • Larry's great no doubt, but Jon's brought new life to these songs and there is not one thing i've heard him do that I dislike

  • Well I'm totally different on him to be honest. He's grown on me the more I've seen them, but I still wish he'd just take the whole 'less is sometimes more' vibe, to heart.

  • No that would be Wayne krantz if we re talking SD guitarist who plays too much, not that he's bad, quite the opposite but he's pretty damn busy for this music.

    Anyway, how do mean??

  • Yeh, typical ignorant TV people, the director thought Becker was playing lead.

  • horn section is lagging on the beat on the intro, damnit.

  • prob really hard to hear in an outdoor place like that. maybe im wrong

  • sounded OKay from my end

    to each his own, tho

  • god she's so annoying....when walter blows you off with a snarky comment it means your question will not be answered, move on....god couric is a twit....may i say it again? TWIT... ARRRRGH

  • Totally agree - $50mil contract for 5yrs of omni-annoyance!

  • it's like she's the junior high school teacher that is going to allow the dorky jazz band kids 10 minutes of class time to play their little song..."Gee, thanks Mrs. Couric, we've been practicing for 2 weeks now!" - except it's STEELY DAN

  • Thorough!

  • effing wicked!

  • Great song! Good performance, too.

  • kickass jam by two monster talents.

  • being interviewed by Katie Couric is like being interviewed by your dentist.

  • "We wanted to think about it for 17 years before we did it".... LMAO!

  • Music sounds great. Vocals didn't. Maybe it was the levels? And why a different guitar solo? That solo is the best part of the whole song. Still... better than any band I've ever been in.

  • I knew that Michael McDonald sang backup, but after seeing the VH1 Classics special on them, he did most of the harmonies on this song when they sang "Peg." So, yes, it does sound lacking to me on that part because there is not that grand harmony working...but they are still kick ass.

  • Oh yes. Kick ass band

  • But let's also remember that a lot of viewers (especially younger ones) don't know much about the band either. Regardless of whether or not Couric knows anything about The Dan, the producers would tell her to play dumb and ask open questions anyways.

I'm 17 and am a huge fan, but only because of my parents.

  • really? well im12! i started loving steely dan after hearing bodhisattva.

  • @brakmatik13 Congratulations on having excellent taste in music. My mom's influences were huge as well.

  • @brakmatik13 I don't think age has much to do with music preference, but I'm a musician- maybe it's different. What was funny is that Couric prob knew they were f-ing with her! They both have a beautifully dry sense of humor, and are light years ahead of (probably) all of us who have viewed this. =)

  • where's michael mcdonald with those awesome back-up vocals. katie couric is oblivious. this woman clearly knows nothing of the band, which is quite sad because she grew up in that era. i'm 24 and i even know who they are and like them too! thanks, dad!

  • Are they still performing?

  • Yes!! They're actually on tour now.

  • Steely Dan was voted the Band that had the most impact in the 70s

  • remind me never to forget that

  • So true to the original .. polished, professional, hard to beat ...

  • It's clear that Couric knows nothing about the band.

  • Don't ever forget Cornelius, you jerks, worrying about Katie, who still has the job.

  • fuck yeah

  • ha ha ha, the interview is hilarious. These guys totally don't give a shit... I love it.

  • Blast from the past. I was there during this taping! Off at stage left.

  • I remember my first concert was Steely Dan and it was that same year! July 2,2000!

  • Couric was an idiot then as she still is now. Knew absolutely nothing about Peg, and didn't know that Fagan and Becker were the essence of Steely Dan. Matt Lauer is the same dang way. People don't research anything, much less listen to it.

  • That's NBC for ya

  • It's what you get for industrialized shit.

  • She knows a million more than Palin will ever know.

  • You'd think these broadcast anchor bimbos, to justify their multimillion dollar salaries, would at least read up on the people they're interviewing. If only to simulate a semblance of seeming to know something.

  • Anybody want to own the original multitracks of Peg? Let me hear your offers...This is not a fake...:-)

  • I would be interested... as long as you don't try to make a profit out of this.

  • how much?

  • couric should of done abit more homework on donald and walter she looked quite vague and ignorant when she asked them about what song they were going to sing

  • She's an idiot on most everything

  • strangely, not really the same without Michael Mc Donald, shows how important the timbre of his voice was for the original part.

  • I still love this song as much as I did since the summer of '76

  • this song didnt come out until 1977 i thought, but idk

  • The gibbering twats in the country make it a dickfest..

Only in America, or maybe Iraq these days..

  • I was in Basic Training when this was aired, so, I was unfortunately unable to see it... Steely Dan is BY FAR THE most incredibly talanted, sophisticated and very influential musicians of our time...

  • Pre-9/11 NYC. my home. It seems so distant now.

  • Becker and Fagen are phenomenal. Circus Money is an excellent addition as well.

  • man if you didn't have the sound on this video or knowledge of steely dan, you'd think you were watching some christian rock group - look at that crowd.

  • this isn't Slayer, dummy. they dress like & act like normal suburban folks. what did you expect: Vivienne Westwood?! more importantly, why are they so reluctant to get the original guitar solo right?

  • LOL!

  • you're trying to say the people at 3.20 are your normal suburban folks? Come off it!

  • It's the today show...

  • She doesnt get it...when they say "thorough" they mean "thorough". That is just the way they are...plus they never had the pressure to tour because the music stood on it's own...touring wasnt necessary

  • Well, after blowing a glorious opportunity at seeing them, I am having a '70's revival. I liked them growing up, but have a new appreciation for the DAN. Actually bought a couple of cd's by them today. My new obsession. Up next: the SEx Pistols!

  • Bullshit! Not enough close-ups of the gutarist's fingers during that great solo! Bullshit, NBC!

  • jay graydon was the original soloist on the song funny thing about it is they had so many others try. when jay came in he did it in 1 take so his solo stayed very good solo might I add

  • "But seriously guys..."

*stone faced* "No, we just wanted to pick at it for 17 years or so."

Katie Couric just got owned, hipster style, and she (of course) didn't even recognize it.

  • that 20 year gap was truly a tragedy. We are only left to imagine what they could produced.

  • Everyone on the planet knows why Steely Dan stopped recording in the 80's. Couric asks the most banal pointless mind-numbing questions. How can someone so clueless have gotten so far? The Dan sarcasm was wayyy over her head.

  • Agreed!!

If I was Katy Couric I would be asking for some autographs.

The "Dan" is the best band of all time! No argument

    Nuff Said

  • oooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah agreed

  • Rumpl4skn-WTF R U talkin about? Couric has no clue, really, that she is in the presence of total Coolness and clueless about how to interact with them. She doesnt know of their total condescension for her type.

  • yo, what you said...what you said...awwrite!

  • haha so true

  • Condescension? That's not really what the Dan boys are about. In spite of what their lyrics might suggest, they are both very humble and average guys, down to earth and friendly. When writing lyrics for their music, they establish a character persona - they're not at all snotty elitists. Far from it actually.

  • levanyzzuf: Is that you, Walter? And why are all of your friends laughing into their hands right now?

  • The thing about "wanting to pick at it for 17 years" is just a typical bit of dry Dan humour; you're either in tune with it or you're not. Couric obviously isn't. I don't know much about Becker, but Fagen is actually a very shy person and quite humble and honest in person and in his interviews. The elitist condescension thing is part of the public image they try to create for themselves.

  • i saw SD twice with drew zing on guitar ... drew rules .... nuff said

  • Couric obviously doesn't understand the first thing about these guys' personalities and is unqualified to be in their presence. Ugh.

That said, SD is 'thee' sh*t.

  • She has nooooooooooo f'ing idea.

Of course they sell a shit load of CD's but the gen public thinks rap and that fake brittney shite is the THANG.

  • wow, what a WEAK Herrington solo....nice moment, tho', out there with the tourists..and Donald in good voice, so early in the a.m.!!..and yes, Katie is a total, TOTAL tool -- a foolish, passive-aggressive, self-involved, bitter LAME-ASSED WENCH. Good riddance. See "surf.."'s comment a few down for the perfect take on the Un-devine Miss C...

  • Steely Dan are more than just a band they are a institution, I grew up in the late 80s n 90s with Walter n Donald's music, I now at 22 yrs of age own all their albums, and what people forget is that Steely Dan has charted some fantastic session musicians.

most noticeable is Jeff Pocaro Steve Gadd (Drums) Micheal McDonald (Keys N Vox)

    and Wayne Shorter (Sax)

    And many many more

  • Katie Couric fails at life.

  • Katie is such a TOOOOOOOOL!

  • What a band.....incomparable........

A flub near the end Rumpl4skn? you don't know JAZZ when you hear it, I guess...(-; This is the band wut rote it! Whatever they play is rite!!

  • What a band.....incomparable........

A flub near the Rumpl4skn? you don't know JAZZ when you hear it, I guess...(-; This is the band wut rote it! Whatever they play is rite!!

  • Solo wasn't 'that' bad. He improvised around the original, and had a flub near the end. But the mix was awful, they didn't bring him up enough, and the sound was thin. Band was great overall. Still always miss Mike MacDonald on the BGV's though. : )

  • excellent performance, the solo was pretty busted, though... too cold out, perhaps?

  • There's Ricky Lawson! Pounding that groove

  • Old school baby! Straight up old school! :)

Steely Dan rocks and you know this!

  • Ooh I love you for posting this Carlos! :)

    -Meg

  • Wow, never thought I'd see the Dan playing the Today show. Great to see Ricky Lawson (drums) and Tom Barney (bass), what a great combo.

  • Thanks for uploading!

  • Steely Dan rocks!! Sure am glad they decided to do another album. I am going to go buy it today. Katie Couric sucks though..

  • two things that make me happy katie couric and steely dan

  • Is that bumpus on sax?!!???

  • YES!

  • Probably no warm up...great performance by all

  • Fagens voice can be fucking awful at times...but i still love the guy. In a manly way if you know what i mean!

  • being cagey as usual, I wouldnt have them any other way, love it

  • Steely Dan in daylight is still fucking awesome.

  • I was in Basic Training when this aired... Good thing I get see what I missed......

  • Becker and Fagen are way too smart for this ditz. She is completely not catching their sarcasm.

  • lol

  • Early in the morning for SD that. Still excellent though!

  • HAhahaah... Good catch Carlos. This has to be the funniest SD moment I've ever seen-- "Goodmorning, hello Katie, hold your signs up folks, wave high for the close up kids-- I know their gonna love it".

  • H U G E !

  • Herington was having an off-day apparently. A good solo, but not really at the top of his game. He also departed a little more from the original solo than he usually does.

  • I would love to play as good as he does on a bad day.

  • FUCKING GENIUS!!!

  • Carlos, you're the Man!!
