Couric acted like a complete imbecile, which actually played in her favor as Fagen has been known to get very unpleasant in some interview situations. The guy is brilliant but he lives on another planet.
That was one of the best performances you'll ever see on the show. It's amazing when you put good musicians together, you get good music. Then we have to sit through shit like Jennifer Lopez and/or Hanson :-0
@ONLY1PEA YES YES YES YES YES! Man FINALLY I thought that I was the only one after listening to all these clips of different background singers singing PEG the background singers are hurting me! I have always made it a point as a background singer to study what WORKS and Michael McDonald's backgrounds (he did all the parts sigh) WORK!
Gotta agree with the comments about this reporter...
Did she think Becker was kidding when he said that waited 20 years because they wanted to be thorough? I love it how she turns to Fagen to confirm this ... what an idiot.
Assign somebody who knows music to the event... I mean, it's not like this is some student marching band.
To say that "Katie is clueless" does not even come close! I wouild have loved to see the great Jay Graydon do that solo but Jon Herington nails it on the outro...Rest in peace, Mr. Bumpus...
Saw them in Milwaukee last week... Unbelievable show, the Royal Scam LP followed by "selections from our illustrious career" (Fagan's comment) and it was the definitive Dan show. I LOVED it! Every masterfully played note!
Well I'm totally different on him to be honest. He's grown on me the more I've seen them, but I still wish he'd just take the whole 'less is sometimes more' vibe, to heart.
No that would be Wayne krantz if we re talking SD guitarist who plays too much, not that he's bad, quite the opposite but he's pretty damn busy for this music.
god she's so annoying....when walter blows you off with a snarky comment it means your question will not be answered, move on....god couric is a twit....may i say it again? TWIT... ARRRRGH
it's like she's the junior high school teacher that is going to allow the dorky jazz band kids 10 minutes of class time to play their little song..."Gee, thanks Mrs. Couric, we've been practicing for 2 weeks now!" - except it's STEELY DAN
Music sounds great. Vocals didn't. Maybe it was the levels? And why a different guitar solo? That solo is the best part of the whole song. Still... better than any band I've ever been in.
I knew that Michael McDonald sang backup, but after seeing the VH1 Classics special on them, he did most of the harmonies on this song when they sang "Peg." So, yes, it does sound lacking to me on that part because there is not that grand harmony working...but they are still kick ass.
But let's also remember that a lot of viewers (especially younger ones) don't know much about the band either. Regardless of whether or not Couric knows anything about The Dan, the producers would tell her to play dumb and ask open questions anyways.
I'm 17 and am a huge fan, but only because of my parents.
@brakmatik13 I don't think age has much to do with music preference, but I'm a musician- maybe it's different. What was funny is that Couric prob knew they were f-ing with her! They both have a beautifully dry sense of humor, and are light years ahead of (probably) all of us who have viewed this. =)
where's michael mcdonald with those awesome back-up vocals. katie couric is oblivious. this woman clearly knows nothing of the band, which is quite sad because she grew up in that era. i'm 24 and i even know who they are and like them too! thanks, dad!
Couric was an idiot then as she still is now. Knew absolutely nothing about Peg, and didn't know that Fagan and Becker were the essence of Steely Dan. Matt Lauer is the same dang way. People don't research anything, much less listen to it.
You'd think these broadcast anchor bimbos, to justify their multimillion dollar salaries, would at least read up on the people they're interviewing. If only to simulate a semblance of seeming to know something.
couric should of done abit more homework on donald and walter she looked quite vague and ignorant when she asked them about what song they were going to sing
I was in Basic Training when this was aired, so, I was unfortunately unable to see it... Steely Dan is BY FAR THE most incredibly talanted, sophisticated and very influential musicians of our time...

The elitist condescension thing is part of the public image they try to create for themselves.
wow, what a WEAK Herrington solo....nice moment, tho', out there with the tourists..and Donald in good voice, so early in the a.m.!!..and yes, Katie is a total, TOTAL tool -- a foolish, passive-aggressive, self-involved, bitter LAME-ASSED WENCH. Good riddance. See "surf.."'s comment a few down for the perfect take on the Un-devine Miss C...
Steely Dan are more than just a band they are a institution, I grew up in the late 80s n 90s with Walter n Donald's music, I now at 22 yrs of age own all their albums, and what people forget is that Steely Dan has charted some fantastic session musicians.
most noticeable is Jeff Pocaro Steve Gadd (Drums) Micheal McDonald (Keys N Vox)
Solo wasn't 'that' bad. He improvised around the original, and had a flub near the end. But the mix was awful, they didn't bring him up enough, and the sound was thin. Band was great overall. Still always miss Mike MacDonald on the BGV's though. : )
