  • boring

  • GREAT NOW THAT WE HAVE THAT OUT OF THE WAY! can you figure out how to charge up a lead acid battery with that machine?

  • If you had two balls on strings, would they clack clack clack ?

  • @advthinker yes,i have two balls,but i'm afraid to give them high voltage... ;)

  • omg ? put your hand on it ?

  • so basically, wimshurst machine + hampster = no electric bill?

  • @llamadogwillkillu hamster on some serious steroids maybe

  • Its basically hooked up to franklins bells except no pyhsical bells.

  • dude i used something similar to this in physics and it zapped the fuck out of me lol

  • i tried to take this seriously then I just ended up dancing aroud the kitchen!

  • Good demonstration. I love the music!

  • good realisation !!

  • How many volts can a device this size put out? And how big would it have to be to power a house?

  • The wimshurst machine will produce a spark roughly one third of the length of the spinning discs. The electrical breakdown of air is 3000 V/cm so a 1 cm spark is 3000V. It produces a high voltage but the current is erratic so it wouldn't work very well for powering anything like a radio or a light bulb, it would just burn it up.

  • @amethyst8teen

Actually the breakdown electric field for dry air is approximately 30 kV/cm. Check your data.

  • What is the proper name for the Pendulum ball apparatus. I have ordered the Wimshurst Machine but I don't think that ball thing comes with it. I will make it myself. Is that a metal ball with two magnets on each end? I am guessing that this will keep the device going indefinitly.

  • The ball is a plastic or some other insulator that a charge clings to. The pendulum will only go as long as the wimshurst is spinning. A wooden ball should work fine.

  • Use a ping-pong ball, spray it with aluminum paint. The end plates are just aluminum or some thin metal. Suspend it with silk thread.

  • woo my surname is wimshurst

  • my balls do that when riding a horse..

  • The drive belt of the 1st PVC-Disk is normal and the drive belt of the 2nd PVC-Disc is crossed over cause one Disk must rotate against the other that you can produce high static electricity!

  • Sparks are amazing fun! Does the electrical polarity change if you reverse the direction of rotation? And why is the drive belt crossed over?

    Ken

  • Are those Leyden jars at both ends?

  • yes. They're used to give the sparks a little juice and to help build up voltage due to the small size of the discharge terminals.

  • Great illustration of a Wimshurst machine in action!!! Well done!!!
