Depends on what kind of GNU/Linux distro your using. Some commercial distro's might be illegal to hack (I think). Same goes for Linux based devices (say, a mobile phone with a Linux flavor).
Tips? If you have more than one computer, try and find some scripts or hacking methods from the net and try it on your own computer. You could also port some free and open Windows program's to Linux.

BSD, you mean UNIX? You mean those ultra-complicating OS's?
Yeah, I know those, too. lol. They're cool, once you get used to them they can get pretty addicting because you realize that there's more you can do with your computer than you could otherwise. Those free OS's are like how I see Manual Transmissions and Automatics in cars. MT is cheaper, but it's more rewarding as you can gain more control of your car and get better performance. Whereas AT is good for people who don't like to think.
