Well... he's playing a Carvin V220 which from the factory has C22 pickups on it. From the other videos I've seen, he plays through Randall amps. His sustain comes from gaining the crap out of his amp.

The sustain in Tom's guitar comes from Seymour Duncan Metal Live Wire pick ups. (I asked him about this in my lessons with him). I use the same pick ups on my guitar and the sustain is just crazy!

some people say it's from his emg's...that' possible...but another way to get that kind of sustain is to go to the fernandez guitar web site...they have a system that puts in a pickup and a battery which allows you to hold a note for as long as the battery has life in it. it's pretty sweet. i think he might use that...i think that because he has so many knobs. and this takes a couple i think.

Personally I kinda like to start from the bottom, doing downstrokes to the highest note, then back, but I guess it works wither way.
