  • Even though this piece of music has been done to DEATH in other fan tribute videos, somehow it fits with this one so WELL!

  • Can you tell me what this soundtrack is for your Hartnell and Sylvester years tribute?

  • bloody bbc i will never forgive them for deleting most of his and pat troughtons episodes... they were like cybermen :( they should use the audios and animate them like 10th doctors 2 episodes....

  • @fenric71 Fortunately they are animating the missing episodes in 'The Reign of Terror' for release next year. And I highly suspect the same will be done with at least 'The Tenth Planet' as well as the 2nd Doctor story 'The Ice Warriors'. And yeah, I agree with you. I would pay a great deal of money to see 'The Massacre of St. Bartholomew's Eve' or 'Marco Polo', but sadly they're lost :~(

  • @BinroWasRight That would be fantastic!!!! perhaps they should start thinking about this for the 50th anniversary...

  • Best Hartnell video I've seen yet!

Love it, brilliant work here <3

  • Man, I can't stop watching this! It's amazing. A great tribute, Babelcolour. I love the "Requiem for a Dream" music in this, and the editing is incredible, too. I don't know how you do such extraordinary videos! Keep up the good work!

  • You've got to do these types of videos for the other doctors, just like this and seven. I find them both just excellent.

  • That was spectacular! William Hartnell's stories haven't aged terribly well, but this makes it all new and exciting again. I'd love to see more tributes!

  • That was bloody amazing!!!

  • 1 Doctor reversed the polarity of the likes bar

  • Funny, I was just thinking the other day how wonderful it is that William Hartnell, who had been dissatisfied with many of the roles in film and television he'd gotten but fell in love with the idea of playing The Doctor, is still remembered every day across the world by fans of Doctor Who, over 35 years after his death. An actor who must have worried about his legacy has found his own very special brand of immortality in his work on DW. And this is a very nice tribute to his magical era :~D

  • Is the song that is played on this in an album? Cos it's really pretty. Also this video is magnificent. I really love it!

  • I,ve Seen one old episode of doctor who and it was could somthing like the space museum I think?

  • This doctor is the real doctor of them all.

  • What episode is that called where mr bean appears?

  • @evana089 Rowan Atkinson played a hypothetical Ninth Doctor in the non-canon (but officially licensed) comedy sketch, "Curse of the Fatal Death"

  • Emotions, Love, Pride, Hate, Fear!' May i ask what Hartnell story it is from? I recognise, but sadly not enough to remember it's name x

  • @BritishAlienCompany The Tenth Planet,

  • @TheOnComingStorm121 Thank you so much! Knew i recognised it from somewhere! hehe. xx

  • @BritishAlienCompany the tenth planet

  • After re watching Doctor who from the beginning, I am now in Tom Baker's run as the Dr. However, I keep looking back at Hartnell's portrayal, and consider it the best. Full of the kind of freshness and imagination that makes the new series wonderful (in a 1960s perspective of course), I would argue. Hartnell was and is wonderful and I hope he is looking down from heaven amazed that the show has lasted and is still loved after so many years.

  • The 1 dislike is from some idiotic nine-year-old who doesn't understand why it's in black and white XD. He probably thinks the show started in 2007 and has always starred David Tennant.

  • I find it appropriate that, due to lack of space, the title of this appeard as "THE HARTNELL". In capitals. This tribute works that way.

  • Can you upload THE TROUGHTON YEARS?

  • "This senseless, evil killing!" God, Hartnell could deliver! What a fantastic tribute.

  • Er, make that: It's funny how action-packed that made the 1st Doctor's era seem. But also, I think, fitting for the most mysterious of all the Doctor's incarnations :~)

  • It's funy how action-packed that made the 1st Doctor's era seem. But also, I think, to the most mysterious of all the Doctor's incarnations :~P)

  • If you needed action scenes, you should've gotten Susan jumping on that caveman and beating him over the head in the first serial. Set to that music it would've been awesome.

  • 1:33 - Mr Bean

  • Babelcolour, would it be OK if I used some of the footage of the late William Hartnell for my own tribute to the First Doctor?

  • Which episode is the quote near the beginning from? "All we search the truth. My truth is in the stars."

  • @Crowley9 The last episode of "The Daleks", I think.

  • Comment removed

  • I love the way that this is actually The Doctor in his teen years in a way... at the time this was a gumpy old man but all these years later we can see this as The Doctor being a stroppy youth! That is why i love the doctor in this 1st body...

  • "It all started out as a mild curiousity in the junkyard now its a great spirit of adventure." Thank you Mr. Hartnell for summing up almost 50 years of Doctor Who with that one statement.

  • You cold not do a patrick troughton tribute like this. There are not enough drmatic clips.

  • what is the back round theme?

  • @MrBobzilla49 It's from the movie 'Requiem For A Dream'.

  • I wish there was a "love it" button! ^_^

  • William is one of the best ever Doctors! In my Opinion,He's one of my favorites

  • AWESOME!!! Anyone who says Black and White is boring don't know what they're talking about!

  • I've always thought the William Hartnell episodes were better in some ways. They weren't all "Oh my god, it's a dalek fighting a heavily armoured killobot5000" If you get what I mean.

  • @sipodge That comment made me shoot root beer out of my nose.

  • @bigfatcarp93

    Mmmm, root beer :)

  • what is the backround music?

  • Excellent footage. I love the song you choose.

  • great video! where did u get this version of the requim for a dream song i've been looking for it everywhere!

  • i just cant imagine this guy in the time war, can you?

  • Hartnell's doctor really had a diffrent feel of sticking up to enemies. You saw the strong emotions on his face. Some people don't like these old ones because they don't have colour. Drama defines a programme, not the colours it's shown in

  • 1:30 - "KATARINA!!!" Just awesome. Billy certainly kicks the arse of the good, but pale imitation, milquetoasts since 2005.

  • Could you please tell me what version of Requiem for a Dream this is?

  • Sorry, stupid question, but what serial is the "Mild curiosity in a junkyard" line from?

  • @bigfatcarp93 The Sensorites

  • @bobandquizo Thanks. :)

  • Fantastic! I love watching this. A great tribute to the Hartnell years that really should be added as a special feature on the DVD's. Good work!

  • @supermephiles124 No... No it wouldn't.

  • "Emotions...love...pride...hate...fear!"

  • The music for this post is awesome and fits perfectly.

  • I am glad The Space Museum still exists as it gives us some good moody atmospheric shots of Hartnell and the freezer machine prop that has reappeared in many Dr Who episodes.

  • What can I say this is awesome. Stuart does it again!

  • what is this music???? I love it but need to have got to find it

  • @buffykidd1971 Requiem for a Dream ~ Clint Mansell

  • you are awesome

  • The best doctor of all. You must make another for Pat Troughton with whats clips remain. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!

  • @thomasauty: Amen to that.

  • Bravo sir, Bravo!

  • Oh no it's still good

  • They would be better in colour but awesome

  • Never satisifed some people.

    B+W is better.

  • I Agree

  • 0:55 - The greatest shot of William Hartnell's doctor!

  • i don't see how any who fan can't like him. he is THE doctor. the first. the second most important but the best in terms of his age and what he did on the show

  • I absolutely love Hartnell's portrayal of the Doctor,

far more mysterious & seemingly dangerous than the big girls blouse he has become.

  • @hallofsteve: I second that.

  • @hallofsteve You are refering to David Tennant I assume?

  • I've just finish watching a box set of William Hartnell's Dr Who. Fu##ng hell they're the most bloody and visceral version of the Doctor. Not so much in the action, but more so in the acting and the story, No wonder the whole series was classified as "adult", it bloody BIGHTS

  • 1:30

  • This is fantasttic! Its soo cool! Whats the music?

  • Still my favourite Doctor, William Hartnell was just perfect for the part.

  • Soo AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!

  • This is lovely - sorry if I've already commented. But it's a reminder of how a show that wasn't expected to last for more than one short series managed to survive for its first four years, thanks to a dedicated team and a magical leading man.

What a shame the recordings and prints weren't looked after better by the BBC - the inconsistency in quality is really apparent when you see one story's clip next to another.

  • The image of the cybermen coming out of the snow is my favourite image of the whole series it's EPIC

  • This is epic!

  • simply the greatest hartnell tribute ever made hands down

  • Great video!

The Dalek voice at 1.30 sounds really menacing!

  • You always seem to be able to get the best scenes. Wonderful!

  • It could be from the chase when the tardis materialised in a haunted house at a disused funfair and everone thought that they were in someones imagination but i havent got a lot of the hartnell episodes so i cant be certain

  • whats the name of the music

  • Sorry if this is a little off-topic, but I don't know where else to ask. There's a scene somewhere and the 1st Doctor says, 'now will you please stop buggering me?' supposedly, and I Really want to know where it's from. Ideas, anyone? thanks.

  • It looks like its from the daleks when susan went back to tardis to get the anti-radiation drugs left by the thals.

  • sorry no not that bit the part where the doctor is holding the candle

  • Possibly The Smugglers, the Reign of Terror, or the Massacre.

  • god i wonder where he got the footage from it must be rare so i am thinking it is from the reign of terror

  • Where did you get the footage at 0:33 and what episode is it from ??? i watched your previous hartnell tribute but this is amazingly good !

  • Amazing work. Im from a generation of the 5ht and 4th doctor but the 1st doctor has always been very very interesting. It was always interesting that he was willing to kill as the first doctor but changed as time went on. Even then, he was still very compasionate, as you can see how he cares for Susan. I know that people see the Doctor as mysterious because we don't know his name, but we really have seen most of his life. He is just another person. But the rise of status is interesting none les

  • Not as affectionate as your previous Hartnell tribute but still a stunning and effective compilation which would make a fantastic DVD easter egg.

  • 1:54 what episode is that from

  • I seem to remember the Doctor visiting some sort of haunted house in the chase... I think that's where it's from.

  • Requiem for The Doctor.... HAH! :)

  • indeed this is great

and to anyone who is after more of these tributes Babelcolour very kindly gave me permition to finish them off The Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee years are already up and I'm working on Tom Bakers at the moment so if anyone is interested in seeing these subscribe to my channel, I will be doing all the doctors at some point

  • The original and still the best.

    Classic Stuff!

  • Well, that certainly WAS dramatic! Well done!

  • oh my gosh! this scared my! when they stood on that dudes hand i had to look away (well, almost!)

and cuz i watched this wiv headphones in the screaming in 0:44 only came through one headphone and it frightened the life out of me! i coukdn't tell if it was the computer or if someone was getting mugged outside! :-p

  • That is the something that happend to me

  • This is so intense. I'm a New Who fan dutifully going back and watching all the Classic episodes, and I'm in the midst of Hartnell right now.

He's delightful. Thats the only word I can come up with to describe him. Delightful.

  • I was in the position you were earlier this year...I loved seeing the rest of an unearthly child, to compare the doctor willing to kill versus the very anti-death doctor existent today...and then to see the first doctor change was another great addition to the first

  • That. Was. AWESOME.

  • I think the music really suits William Hartnell's doctor.

  • Brilliant. This takes me back to being a little boy in the early 1980s, sneaking out of bed and turning on the TV...that was when I discovered Doctor Who, and my local station was airing the William Hartnell episodes. I started with Planet of Giants and watched it episodically all the way through Dragonfire. Bill Hartnell will always be The Doctor to me. Thank you for bringing it all back!

  • This doctor makes me ROFL

  • How so?

  • He's just amazingly clever. Like in Space Museum they are interogatting him and they have a special machine that can display his thoughts so he can't lie. So they ask him how he got to their planet and he shows them a bicycle. Then they ask him where is he from and he shows them a bunch of walruses. He just seemed like such an asshole in the beginning, but he begins to show a quirky humorous side as the series progresses.

  • Out of them all, Hartnell's Doctor goes through (arguably) the most change. He goes from ruthless anti-hero to a great loving grandfather :)

  • my second favorite Doctor

  • This was probably better than the McCoy one...amazing job.

  • He IS the Doctor at 0:40

  • He IS the Doctor all the way through :P

  • He IS the Doctor at 1:03

  • I think he's the ultimate doctor @ :39....btw how do u make it so when you click on 1:03, it takes you there?

  • An interesting companion piece to McCoy's era. It seems a bit more gothic, but just not as exciting as the Seventh Doctor. GREAT JOB, NONETHELESS!

  • Just curious: do you realize how incredibly made of awesome you are? Your videos are inspirational, and that's an understatement. Feeling the ego boost yet? :)

  • Requiem for a Dream - Clint Mansell.

  • What's that song called?

  • Oh, that is magnificent. You should be proud. Really looking forward to seeing Keys of Marinus again when the DVD arrives.

  • Awesome

  • Awesome intro to Hartnell - Thx!!

  • WOW!! that was good!!!

  • That was awesome; I love Hartnell.

Great choice of clips and great job of editing.

  • Excellent video as always Stuart.

It's a shame Dodo isn't featured in the video as then all of William Hartnell's companions would have been represented but it's still a great video nonetheless.

  • If you can make this period of Doctor Who look this good, I cant wait to see what you do with Christopher Eccleston, and David Tennant. Perfect!

  • He's done one with David Tennant. I think its wonderful.

  • Excellent video this, and the mccoy one. Tell me, what's the music? I know it but i can't remember the name. Also will you be doing more The ? Years videos?

  • HOLY CANOLI

THAT was AWESOME.....You need a job an editing job on Doctor Who....this is REALLY well done!!! Oh my goodness...that made me swell up with emotion, gave me goose bumps...yikes! William HARTNELL is da MAN!

  • A masterful bit of editing there Mr. BableColour. Suburb work, as ever :-)

  • amazing...what is that song called?

  • Excellent, although I would have used more from The Ark because the final episode had a lot of action.

  • Hmmm. I don't quite know what version of 'the Ark' you've been watching, but the version made my the BBC certainly doesn't have any more action in part four!

  • Thank you for this - I am very pleased that there are people like you who make sure the old boy isn't forgotten - what a wonderful actor and a magical Doctor!

  • EPIC! That is all I can say. =D

  • That's fantastic as usual. Great stuff, will show my friends this so they watch Dr Who, not just the post 2005 stuff.

  • Again, I can see why I subsribe to your videos Excellent!

  • And again, Stuart, your work shines. Your Tributes are *always* guaranteed to have me grabbing a DVD or VHS from my collection, and re-experiencing some of the finer moments of classic Who. Never cease to amaze me, your edits...

  • great work as always

  • Thank you

  • Loved it. ***** :-)

  • Can I watch the entire William Hartnell back catalogue before work tomorrow?

  • not possible lol!

  • Hola

Felicidades.

  • gracias

  • Good. For a bit of fun, do it in colour :)

  • Hahaha. If I had a year to spare I probably would ;)

  • Absolutely brilliant. Thank you so much.

  • Amazing!!!

  • you make even the Chase look cool!

  • Wow! Makes the Hartnell era look really dramatic and action packed, in fact I'm going to go watch an episode or two now!! :D

  • Superb! Rarely do you see videos of this quality on youtube. Of course Lux Atheria is used in a lot of videos...not sure why. But for some reason it seems to work very well here, suits the dark edge the early series had, mysterious, powerful and majestic. Even with a limited budget, grainy footage it still trumps what you will find of telivision today, with the exception of the new Who of course.

  • amazing!

Its like there is a war going on!

  • Just...wow. It's really a shame that so much of his stories no longer exist...

Are you doing one for each Doctor? (hope, hope)

  • 10 STARZ!!

  • ur a star babel!this is best yet!!!

    dr who store-exmouth,devon

  • wow, I love this osng and teh dialouge over it and teh composition? just wow.

  • I've been trying to get them to play at the same time - can't manage it :( love it as always, you choose great quotes. I think WH's era works more on a scare level than a action level. There is effect use of silence where isn't even music. Thank you!

  • should say effective sorry

  • amazing! 5 stars and faved

  • "This senseless, evil killing!" Gotta love how Bill delivered that line.

  • It's marvellous, isn't it!

  • Are you doing the same for some more era's of Doctor Who?? Just ponders me, because you took down your old Tom Baker tribute a while back.

    Would love to know.

  • I didn't take down my old Tom Baker tribute - YouTube did. Also, I don't think I'll be making any more of these 'Years' videos. It would get repetitive having more in the same style.

  • I think you should at least do the 2nd doctor like this. I think it'd be awesome with some of the trial scenes.

  • Absolutely awesome!

  • coolio:P

  • You deifnately rose to the challenge mate! This is awesome!

  • Could you do the same with troughton?

  • Excellent tribute!

  • Excellent use of his best dramatic poses (who can top his approaching the War Machine?) and top-notch sound editing - Looks to me like you met the challenge perfectly well! Now I want to go watch some Hartnell again.

  • This is absolutely brilliant as always. It would have been good to have different music (so we don't have that same "samey" feeling). Also nice to use the dramatic "blink" effect as you used in the Sylvester McCoy tribute.
