bloody bbc i will never forgive them for deleting most of his and pat troughtons episodes... they were like cybermen :( they should use the audios and animate them like 10th doctors 2 episodes....
@fenric71 Fortunately they are animating the missing episodes in 'The Reign of Terror' for release next year. And I highly suspect the same will be done with at least 'The Tenth Planet' as well as the 2nd Doctor story 'The Ice Warriors'. And yeah, I agree with you. I would pay a great deal of money to see 'The Massacre of St. Bartholomew's Eve' or 'Marco Polo', but sadly they're lost :~(
Man, I can't stop watching this! It's amazing. A great tribute, Babelcolour. I love the "Requiem for a Dream" music in this, and the editing is incredible, too. I don't know how you do such extraordinary videos! Keep up the good work!
That was spectacular! William Hartnell's stories haven't aged terribly well, but this makes it all new and exciting again. I'd love to see more tributes!
Funny, I was just thinking the other day how wonderful it is that William Hartnell, who had been dissatisfied with many of the roles in film and television he'd gotten but fell in love with the idea of playing The Doctor, is still remembered every day across the world by fans of Doctor Who, over 35 years after his death. An actor who must have worried about his legacy has found his own very special brand of immortality in his work on DW. And this is a very nice tribute to his magical era :~D
After re watching Doctor who from the beginning, I am now in Tom Baker's run as the Dr. However, I keep looking back at Hartnell's portrayal, and consider it the best. Full of the kind of freshness and imagination that makes the new series wonderful (in a 1960s perspective of course), I would argue. Hartnell was and is wonderful and I hope he is looking down from heaven amazed that the show has lasted and is still loved after so many years.
The 1 dislike is from some idiotic nine-year-old who doesn't understand why it's in black and white XD. He probably thinks the show started in 2007 and has always starred David Tennant.
Er, make that: It's funny how action-packed that made the 1st Doctor's era seem. But also, I think, fitting for the most mysterious of all the Doctor's incarnations :~)
If you needed action scenes, you should've gotten Susan jumping on that caveman and beating him over the head in the first serial. Set to that music it would've been awesome.
I love the way that this is actually The Doctor in his teen years in a way... at the time this was a gumpy old man but all these years later we can see this as The Doctor being a stroppy youth! That is why i love the doctor in this 1st body...
"It all started out as a mild curiousity in the junkyard now its a great spirit of adventure." Thank you Mr. Hartnell for summing up almost 50 years of Doctor Who with that one statement.
I've always thought the William Hartnell episodes were better in some ways. They weren't all "Oh my god, it's a dalek fighting a heavily armoured killobot5000" If you get what I mean.
Hartnell's doctor really had a diffrent feel of sticking up to enemies. You saw the strong emotions on his face. Some people don't like these old ones because they don't have colour. Drama defines a programme, not the colours it's shown in
I am glad The Space Museum still exists as it gives us some good moody atmospheric shots of Hartnell and the freezer machine prop that has reappeared in many Dr Who episodes.
i don't see how any who fan can't like him. he is THE doctor. the first. the second most important but the best in terms of his age and what he did on the show
I've just finish watching a box set of William Hartnell's Dr Who. Fu##ng hell they're the most bloody and visceral version of the Doctor. Not so much in the action, but more so in the acting and the story, No wonder the whole series was classified as "adult", it bloody BIGHTS

This is lovely - sorry if I've already commented. But it's a reminder of how a show that wasn't expected to last for more than one short series managed to survive for its first four years, thanks to a dedicated team and a magical leading man.
What a shame the recordings and prints weren't looked after better by the BBC - the inconsistency in quality is really apparent when you see one story's clip next to another.
It could be from the chase when the tardis materialised in a haunted house at a disused funfair and everone thought that they were in someones imagination but i havent got a lot of the hartnell episodes so i cant be certain
Sorry if this is a little off-topic, but I don't know where else to ask. There's a scene somewhere and the 1st Doctor says, 'now will you please stop buggering me?' supposedly, and I Really want to know where it's from. Ideas, anyone? thanks.
Amazing work. Im from a generation of the 5ht and 4th doctor but the 1st doctor has always been very very interesting. It was always interesting that he was willing to kill as the first doctor but changed as time went on. Even then, he was still very compasionate, as you can see how he cares for Susan. I know that people see the Doctor as mysterious because we don't know his name, but we really have seen most of his life. He is just another person. But the rise of status is interesting none les
and to anyone who is after more of these tributes Babelcolour very kindly gave me permition to finish them off The Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee years are already up and I'm working on Tom Bakers at the moment so if anyone is interested in seeing these subscribe to my channel, I will be doing all the doctors at some point

I was in the position you were earlier this year...I loved seeing the rest of an unearthly child, to compare the doctor willing to kill versus the very anti-death doctor existent today...and then to see the first doctor change was another great addition to the first
Brilliant. This takes me back to being a little boy in the early 1980s, sneaking out of bed and turning on the TV...that was when I discovered Doctor Who, and my local station was airing the William Hartnell episodes. I started with Planet of Giants and watched it episodically all the way through Dragonfire. Bill Hartnell will always be The Doctor to me. Thank you for bringing it all back!
He's just amazingly clever. Like in Space Museum they are interogatting him and they have a special machine that can display his thoughts so he can't lie. So they ask him how he got to their planet and he shows them a bicycle. Then they ask him where is he from and he shows them a bunch of walruses. He just seemed like such an asshole in the beginning, but he begins to show a quirky humorous side as the series progresses.
Just curious: do you realize how incredibly made of awesome you are? Your videos are inspirational, and that's an understatement. Feeling the ego boost yet? :)
It's a shame Dodo isn't featured in the video as then all of William Hartnell's companions would have been represented but it's still a great video nonetheless.

Thank you for this - I am very pleased that there are people like you who make sure the old boy isn't forgotten - what a wonderful actor and a magical Doctor!
And again, Stuart, your work shines. Your Tributes are *always* guaranteed to have me grabbing a DVD or VHS from my collection, and re-experiencing some of the finer moments of classic Who. Never cease to amaze me, your edits...
Felicidades.
Superb! Rarely do you see videos of this quality on youtube. Of course Lux Atheria is used in a lot of videos...not sure why. But for some reason it seems to work very well here, suits the dark edge the early series had, mysterious, powerful and majestic. Even with a limited budget, grainy footage it still trumps what you will find of telivision today, with the exception of the new Who of course.
I've been trying to get them to play at the same time - can't manage it :( love it as always, you choose great quotes. I think WH's era works more on a scare level than a action level. There is effect use of silence where isn't even music. Thank you!
I didn't take down my old Tom Baker tribute - YouTube did. Also, I don't think I'll be making any more of these 'Years' videos. It would get repetitive having more in the same style.
Excellent use of his best dramatic poses (who can top his approaching the War Machine?) and top-notch sound editing - Looks to me like you met the challenge perfectly well! Now I want to go watch some Hartnell again.
This is absolutely brilliant as always. It would have been good to have different music (so we don't have that same "samey" feeling). Also nice to use the dramatic "blink" effect as you used in the Sylvester McCoy tribute.
Even though this piece of music has been done to DEATH in other fan tribute videos, somehow it fits with this one so WELL!

That's fantastic as usual. Great stuff, will show my friends this so they watch Dr Who, not just the post 2005 stuff.

And again, Stuart, your work shines. Your Tributes are *always* guaranteed to have me grabbing a DVD or VHS from my collection, and re-experiencing some of the finer moments of classic Who. Never cease to amaze me, your edits...

Hola
Felicidades.

Wow! Makes the Hartnell era look really dramatic and action packed, in fact I'm going to go watch an episode or two now!! :D

Just...wow. It's really a shame that so much of his stories no longer exist...
Are you doing one for each Doctor? (hope, hope)

I've been trying to get them to play at the same time - can't manage it :( love it as always, you choose great quotes. I think WH's era works more on a scare level than a action level. There is effect use of silence where isn't even music. Thank you!

Are you doing the same for some more era's of Doctor Who?? Just ponders me, because you took down your old Tom Baker tribute a while back.
Would love to know.

I didn't take down my old Tom Baker tribute - YouTube did. Also, I don't think I'll be making any more of these 'Years' videos. It would get repetitive having more in the same style.

I think you should at least do the 2nd doctor like this. I think it'd be awesome with some of the trial scenes.
