To quote John Holt: "When children do well, adults pat themselves on the back and say "look what a good job we've done". And when children fail adults put the finger of blame solely on the child".
Its a sad world we live in when kids kill kids. My question is where is society for these kids who do these heinous crimes? Why doesn't anyone notice these children who fall through the cracks of society? When kids act out aggression towards animals and other children instead of turning a blind eye they should be given help.If the parents won't do their job then it becomes societies responsibility. And if society refuses to get involved, then it has only itself to blame.
@xkambreenkitxbff , I've always thought that this song was also a commentary on society in general - especially when a horrific crime is committed by children, hurting or killing another child - the adults around the young perpetrators obviously did not do enough to deal with the problems that the two boys had, turned a blind eye, & that includes not only the parents but also their teachers. If someone had stepped in, this crime might have been prevented. RIP little James.
God will make right all the injustices in this sick world. Even when justice is not met on the earth, there is to come the real judgement and a place waiting for every single soul. The Lord will rise one day when we're all least expecting it and when many will deny Christ over and over. He will overcome all the evil to exist just as He warned us many times in prophecy.
oh snap,, have not heard this song in over 10 years and i still know all the words and the feeling comes rushing back like it did back them,, powerful and now down it now so it would not be another tens years.. thanks
@jshz actually i found out it was about that sad story of psycho teens who abducted a kid and then beat/killed him to see what it was like to take a life... and i think the song is mostly about how the parents felt... but the line "9 months is too long" is what made me think is was an anti abortion song.
@jshz its written for James Bulger. a two years old kid that was murdered by two kids in Liverpool. its such an interesting story.it makes you sick reading it. find it on wikipedia. :(
I looked up the meaning of the song, if anyone's interested and it's not written on here by anyone-
They said the song was done just after the James Bulger case... two teenagers who, about 15 years ago, kidnapped a toddler from a supermarket, walked him around for a while, brought him to a railroad track, and, they say, beat him to death for fun.
Unfortunately, while I am prochild, the Cranberries were singing about the atrocity of this horrific event and the overall desensitization of society.
At first I thought the plot of this song was about Israeli atrocities towards Palestinian boys and infants. You know, the part where she rephrase the lyrics "..the name was to long, to long, to long...).
@absjaris Yeah, I thought it was about something to do with pregnancy or miscarriage... But, neither explanation made to much sense, that's when I went desperately looking up the meanings on the internet. Singing it so long, and it was frustrating that I didn't know what it meant!
@Steeni22 That's also my impretion. I was living in the UK at that time and eventhough I'm not a native speaker, that's exactly what came to mind; disgust and incomprehention at the James Bulger killing
@TheScouticus An understandable point of view, and since it's only a song, we're all welcome to our own reading.
(Personally, I don't like the idea of ending life at ANY stage just to avoid hardship. If single-parent households and economic strife were all it took to convince a woman to abort, we wouldn't have Mr. Obama as our President, after all.)
Stumbled over the song some time ago and cried my eyes out. It's beatiful, heartfelt, the lyrics just right. Dolores O'Riordan sang the shit out of this song! Love it!
This song is very boring, to me like it more songs how promeses ,Zombie , you and me , linger , go your own way , liar , hoollywood and many others songs of this good band
This song is so moving. It has a lot of influence on me and so many others. Beautiful tune. Dolores' fondness for her children and the love she yearns to give them is quite strong. Though I'm sure her son Taylor was born during the years of 'To the Faitful Departed,' this song still depicts how she really feels. Dolores is ahhhmazing, simple as that. I am excited to see what comes out of their tour! Great music! Thanks for posting!

Damn, this song always makes me cry because I know what it was written for.
What kind of a monster does that to a two-year-old boy? We live in such a sick world...
