I dont think he has done more for the guitar than Segovia. I'm not huge on Segovia's playing, but lets face it, the guy brought the guitar to the limelight, transcribed many pieces and had much written for him. If Segovia never existed the guitar would still be considered a folk instrument only sufficient for the rock stage. I'd say that John Williams has done more sophistication of the instrument than anything else. His performance style is second to none.
I wish people would get of JW's back about playing the Smallman's. He's been playing them for about 35 years now! They're great sounding guitars. Perhaps not preferred over his Fleta, but to Smallman dissers - back off a bit!
John takes this video at quite a clip here, but in general his first recordings were quite fresh and spirited and far outweigh his later versions, which seemed a bit stale by comparison - though still technically proficient.
I remember in mid-sixties when I saw him, also Bream, Segovia, Ramos, Presti & Lagoya, Barbosa-Lima, Diaz, Laurindo......Oh what a grand time that was!
sorry, I read so quickly that i assumed you wrote they were dead. By the way, I've been trying to find tour dates for David Russell, Paco Peña and others but is impossible!I missed David Russell in Cordoba last July and won't it to happen again!

Nobody is more tedious than an aficionado.
I wonder if any of them have a musical bone in their pedantic bodies sometimes.

John hates what he did with Albeniz music in the 60s...But he recorded them later ..again ..and superb! He is a master!
Girls! He has been married twice before and today, his third wife is called Kathie Panama. Gossip!

One of my favorite pieces done by JW. Even with the crummy sound on this old video I can appreciate the sound of that guitar over his Smallman.
