I'm a bit torn... On one side, you have THE best keyboardsolo in the world, sublime guitarwork and fantastic drumming. Then you have OK bass playing and cool saxophone, but it doesn't fit in all that good, though it sounds cool. On the other side you have the voice of Richard Sinclair... His voice may be okay, but it DOES NOT fit in Camel, at least not in my mind.
I'll be Frank or Rick or Richard - whomever you want me to be - but I believe Richard Sinclair added great bass and voice in both Camel and Caravan. Since when is Jazz and improvisation not a positive element in music?
I have enjoyed all of Camel's many line-ups, but the years with Richard Sinclair on bass and Mel Collins on sax are some of my favorite.
With all do respect, I have to disagree with you, cladpixels. Yes, Richard Sinclair was a great bass player, and yes, he had a pretty good voice. But his voice isn't the voice of Camel. It fits good in Caravan, but IMHO not in Camel.
Personally, I think Andy's voice is the voice of Camel. Of course, I do enjoy Peter Bardens, Doug Ferguson and Colin Bass on the vocals as well, but Andy is the voice of Camel.
I've always found Sinclair a little dull, which works for camel, but not for Caravan, nor for Hatfield and the north, in my opinion, even though he was the latter bands main guy.
My thoughts exactly! I liked Doug far better. He went much better with both Andrew Latimer and Peter Bardens in my opinion. Sometimes I wonder if Camel would have been better off sticking with Doug and changed Andy Ward instead, but then they would have lost one of the best drummers in history.
i don't know the history behind ferguson's leave. i find that the ferguson - ward duo was optimal as well. few times in history of rock have i heard a bass player and a drummer bind so well. anyway, ward and ferguson are my personal favorites drummer and bass player respectively.
the original line - up is still unsurpassed. when doug left, camel changed. for the worst according to my tastes.
Not as good as the original...bass player is way too busy, the sax is too "Baker Street"...I love Richard Sinclair but his delivery here is too lounge...I keep waiting for him to say "I recommend the swordfish with asparagus and stilton drizzled over a baguette"...
Great version, I read the info and a couple of flaws; Peter Bardens plays the keyboard, not Peter Vardens, and Richard Sinclair plays bass, not Doug Ferguson. Thanks for posting!

Ah, thank you! I cannot agree more. They were still great with Sinclair, but it's not the same without Doug.

Those are my thoughts exactly. I also have to agree with Richard Sinclair's singing, but I love his bass playing.
