It wont run Windows because of sdhc memory isnt fast. It only reads 30 mpbs read, 15 or 20 mbps write. Windows requires 65 mbps read/write.. So Linux like Kubuntu, Crunchbang or any lightweight Linux would do fine. Remember that 256mb RAM can get you around ok but not fast. I use Puppy Linux that works better. Cuz it loads to RAM to make it get around faster.. I had few crashes but its not an issue.
@purplecatty dude i am going to get this thing and use it on an old p3 with windows and i am damn sure all of my hard drive's are maybe 20mb's write and i am running windows vista on them with a p3 this should work just fine.
would u connect this to the motherboard thru the hard drive IDE slot ?..not sure what sorta slot my old Fujitsu has..it is maxed out on ram at 256 mb..it hardly runs with win xp installed
Tried it with a non-HC ("plain") SD card (2GB Maxell P-series "ultra-fast").
Formatted for ext3 from Linux 2.6.32. It appeared to work fine at first. I could even copy 100s of MBs to the card with no errors (but strange lags!), only to find out later, by surprise, that many files were wrong! Seen miserable I/O errors ("lost interrupt", "attempt to access beyond end of device").
The same card is fine over USB. Tried on 2 very different PCs. Not tested with a "HC" card yet.
I also tried it just from Windows XP: plugged in, turned on, formatted, started copying. After a few minutes (and megabytes), it started giving me harsh write errors. Then even the drive had disappeared (went inaccessible).
NOTE: SDHC devices are supposed to be compatible with SD, so a plain old SD card should just work fine.
Now, whether the problems are due to a faulty device instance, or to a strange SD/HC incompatibility still, I don't know. I only know I wasted a full day + $15.
Yes it is worth it. I use it on old Dell 500mhz laptop. I installed Xubuntu. Just install it as like it were a hard drive. You can't install Windows XP because of SDHC card's r/w speed is 22x write/10x read. too slow for it. There are fastest SDHC that can do both on 30x. Windows XP must have at least 50x r/w speed or greater.
If you use Puppy Linux, It runs very fast on old laptop with SDHC drive. I stick with Xubuntu because I need to use terminal that I am familiar with. If you have fast laptop, you can easily install Ubuntu or any distro. If you don't have CDdrive or if it won't read Linux cd, just simply unplug SDHC adapter and plug it to PC IDE drive and install Linux, once it's done and shut down, transfer back to Laptop and continue to setup. It works great.
SDHC adpater is pretty reliable IMHO. Remind you that SDHC card have limited Read/Write lifetime between 10,000 to 100,000 times. This SDHC Adapter allow up to 32gb Class 6 SDHC card. Be sure to READ and Compare each SDHC adapter in Ebay!! You'll find some limited up to 8GB. Right now newer SDHC card which can do 30X both r/w and class type (maybe Class 7) may not work with current SDHC adapter but keep eye open for newer adapter that would work with up to date SDHC cards
Oops I forgot to add that 44 pins SDHC adapter must have 44 pin to 40 pin IDE adapter with power jack to allow you to plug it to PC IDE cable. It's similar to plugging Laptop hard drive to 44pins to 40 pins adapter to PC IDE cable. Be sure that SDHC adapter is upright position (pin 1 to IDE adapter pin 1). It won't damage if it's plugged wrong way. If it didn't work, flip it over and plug it in. LED blink light will tell you if SDHC is reading/writing.
i just bought the same thing, also from hong kong (from an ebay user named expressems). :) i'm planning to use it in my old ibook g4 and install tiger on an sdhc. since i did install os x previously on a regular sd card, it shouldn't be a problem.
the real problem is swapping, which i have to disable, but i only have 256 megs of ram installed (old ddr modules are insanely hard to find and are really expensive).
anyway, are you sure about the maximum size and class of the sd card this adaptor can take? i was thinking about getting a 64 gig card, maybe an sdxc when they become available..
what do you live in an airport?

I actually want to buy one, but I dunno if they are reliable. Any update on this?
