The other had nothing to do with Portal, Valve, The National, being exiled OR being vilified, but managed to beautifully capture the spirit of the song by starring the world's saddest sock puppet. Unfortunately, according to our own stupid contest rules and the number of guitars we have for prizes (one), only one video could win.
I think part of the reason this video is so ingenius is that it's NOT genius; even though I loved a whole bunch of the other entries, I also found it kind of fitting that the video that won was one that seemed to be giving a huge middle finger to all the other entries just by existing. In my opinion, that kind of humor is what made Portal itself great and it makes this pretty great too.
Is it just me or does the guy look a bit like Gordon Freeman? If it's intentional, I give him some serious crossover credit given the relationship between the games.

The organisers didn't mention you have to directly relate the video to Portal 2. It's a good music video. Who said it had to be amazingly elaborate and full of effects? Look at Coldplay's 'Yellow,' for example. That's a very simple video, but it's so effective - so is this one. Stop whining, fanboys.
I think all of them win, because they're all music videos. This one's cool, some of the Portal ones are cool too. This one just seems to go with the weird feel of the song. I think this should have been a contest from the band independently. That way, there'd be people to associate it with Portal 2 and people who'd base it off the song. Maybe I'm missing something here, but this was a great video. All the others were centered around the normal Portal-stuff, while this was a break. If you search around, most of the videos had to deal with Doug Rattman, or the neurotoxin. This had nothing to do with either, and I think that element makes it a great video. So don't just hate on this guy because you have the opinion that the video sucks.
If only faceofdoomness had finished his in time. Nothing against this guy, but I personally enjoy it better and it fits Portal and the song and the story of Rattman.
This just sort of seems silly because the puppet looks kinda ridiculous. He reminds me of the bad idea bears in Ave. Q. While I get what this tries to achieve, I don't think it quite does that because of the silliness aspect of puppets. I don't think he thought that part out.
@superskh I agree with the first part-- I LOVE faceofdoomness' video. It was exceptionally well done. But the "silly" part, I think, was kind of intentional. In my opinion, the puppet is intentionally ridiculous to highlight the desperation of the guy who's walking-- he has no one to turn to and no way to deal with his emotion except for a ratty, stupid-looking sock puppet. It's pretty depressing, actually.

I don't think any of you understand why this won. And first, yes, this does involve Portal. And it doesn't need a portal gun to do it. It captures the situation of Ratman and the Companion Cube, the exile and his mentally created friend. The loneliness and the emotional torment is what this video gets, not the game. This deserved to win.
I really really like this video. By itself (or from a music video for the song stand point) it was great. And definitely deserved to be the video for this song. However this wasn't The National saying "make me a music video!" it was Valve saying "make me a portal video" and then letting the National pick a music video. For competition's sake, it was wrong to do. So for the competition I disagree. But competition aside, I love this video.
This video captures the feeling of the song quite well. Truly, it does. Here's my beef with why it won: the contest was for PORTAL 2. Yes, you're supposed to incorporate the song. But the contest was for the game, too.

Can't remember what it's called, but I think it got 2nd place or something? lol), but this one's not completely terrible like some people are saying. I mean, maybe it's a metaphor for Rattmann's story instead of a literal interpretation and it was chosen because it attacks this from a different angle than 99% of the other videos.

I thought it sounded strange to lose to a sock puppet because their videos were so awesome, as well. This is what would've happened if Ratman hadn't gone back. He bolted, not going anywhere, just ran away. He lost his friend the wcc and had to find a new object of compassion, so he tore one of his own socks off and drew a face on it. Now he roams the wilderness aimlessly, trying to cope with the guilt of not saving Chell.
Think of it like that if it makes you feel better.

In my opinion, the puppet is intentionally ridiculous to highlight the desperation of the guy who's walking-- he has no one to turn to and no way to deal with his emotion except for a ratty, stupid-looking sock puppet. It's pretty depressing, actually.

I don't think any of you understand why this won. And first, yes, this does involve Portal. And it doesn't need a portal gun to do it. It captures the situation of Ratman and the Companion Cube, the exile and his mentally created friend. The loneliness and the emotional torment is what this video gets, not the game. This deserved to win.

I really really like this video. By itself (or from a music video for the song stand point) it was great. And definitely deserved to be the video for this song. However this wasn't The National saying "make me a music video!" it was Valve saying "make me a portal video" and then letting the National pick a music video. For competition's sake, it was wrong to do. So for the competition I disagree. But competition aside, I love this video.

This video captures the feeling of the song quite well. Truly, it does. Here's my beef with why it won: the contest was for PORTAL 2. Yes, you're supposed to incorporate the song. But the contest was for the game, too.
This video has nothing to do with the game, Rat Man...none of that. It was chosen by The National because it captures the essence of the song, and for that kind of contest it would deserve to win. But for a Portal 2 contest...sorry, but I'm really pissed this won.

@DeathAngleful Well, in terms of Portal, I do like this other one better (an animation of the comic... Can't remember what it's called, but I think it got 2nd place or something? lol), but this one's not completely terrible like some people are saying. I mean, maybe it's a metaphor for Rattmann's story instead of a literal interpretation and it was chosen because it attacks this from a different angle than 99% of the other videos.

I was kind of agreeing with the people who were commenting on the non-winner's videos for this contest, "YOU LOST TO A SOCK PUPPET!!!" without actually seeing the video. I thought it sounded strange to lose to a sock puppet because their videos were so awesome, as well. Now that I see this video, I realize that this person actually thought about the meaning of the song and deep stuff like that. So I applaud your amazing-ness, babeone1. ^_^

Okay, think of it this way.
This is what would've happened if Ratman hadn't gone back. He bolted, not going anywhere, just ran away. He lost his friend the wcc and had to find a new object of compassion, so he tore one of his own socks off and drew a face on it. Now he roams the wilderness aimlessly, trying to cope with the guilt of not saving Chell.
Think of it like that if it makes you feel better.

Artistically, this deserved to be in the top three, but it doesn't really capture the mood. I get that the song is about a man losing his mind, but this doesn't show how he reached the point of insanity, just shows him aimlessly walking around. Good video nevertheless
