I have vista and have this same problem when using USB headset. Using old plug in headset, the headphones work, but the microphone does not. It's not recognized.
@TeresaDAmario, i think that's exactly what the problem is for me. I, too, just got a new USB headset because I thought I would get something better than the cheap plug ins I usually do. I bought one branded by Microsoft itself, which also wanted to install a bunch of MS Live crap before allowing me to use the headset. Reboot, and I've had this windows shell common dll problem ever since. I think it's shiatty to have to reinstall my O/S just to use a headset. Horrible. Never again.
LOL, I have this same problem, it all links to other sources as well. Such as when I get this error, i can no longer watch videos on youtube, windows media player, listen to music, etc. It happens rendomly for some reason like every 30 min. I'm using Windows 7. Wish there was a way to fix it!
@kartal013 LOL, I figured this out a LONG time ago!!! I realized I did not fully install Windows 7. This happens at the exact last part of the setup. At the way end it asks you to put the CD back in. The first Windows 7 boot CD. When you put it in it updates all existing drivers to fit Windows 7s needs. This worked completely for me. Everything works with one problem. I love windows 7. If anyone has a problem, please let me know and I will go into further detail. This is an easy fix!
I Know The Solution If You Have A Installed Program That Causes "Windows shell common dll is not responding"Uninstall It And It Will Fix!!!

Are you kidding..
Windows 7 is known to have issues with recognizing headsets. Sometimes you get a .dll error sometimes it just doesnt work.
You're still using the RC so wait until retail is released and hopefully that build will fix it.
