DAN FAN HERE!!!!! Love Sign in Stranger's live version off the Live in America cd, it sounds a little more laid back than the fantastic original version. What I wouldn't do to be wealthy enough to follow them everywhere to every show.
This song is UNREAL live because it just provides so much room for instrumentation. You have guys bouncing solos off each other at the same time. Steely Dan is just mind blowing -- everything about them: musicality, arrangement, musicianship, intelligence, creativity, lyricism, complexity, etc etc. One of a kind.
One of my all-time favorites. But the horns overpower the guitar and the guy (not walt) keeps fidgeting with the pedals and looking back. The original studio version and the alive in America is just a little better
Well, the sax player on our right is keeping tempo and the others are keying into his body movement...then when the piano kicks back in with his two notes, they set the temp for the return. It's just the magic that a group of musicians who practice for the performance pull off, They did do a good job of it, especially, as you say, with THAT tempo.
Yeah, this is easily among the coolest steely dan live performances. They are all great, but something about the shadiness of this song just really comes through here. Great horn section!
This song is so awesome live.... This version is so fucking great, I also love the studio version too... The harmonies in this song take my breath away.... FREAKIN SWEET...

Although I am a big fan of many artists, if I had to pick one band to be stranded on an island with it would be Steely Dan.

I'm a musician, and it beggers belief how they can keep that tempo in the horn break, and to break back into the song is soooo smoooth :)

Even better than the version on Alive in America. Fagen's little runs on "past" and "ear"...superb!!!!
This song slow-burns like no other.

yes, in "turn that heartbeat over again" on "can't buy a thrill" there's a lyric that goes "zombie see, and zombie do, he's here with me and you"
