It's that same form. Sometimes the boxing form is called Arhat Boxing, but it is commonly called Louhan Quan, Monk Fist Boxing. I'm still trying to do some research on this Quan.
U guys r funny with that (modern or tradditional) argument stuff. Its like kids asking me; "whats Wing Chung & Wing Tseung? - laughs " This is Luohan Quan period. It's the main imagery that counts. How tradditional can one get in a fuckin' modern world anyway?
If you thought this was good, check out the whole documentary. "Shaolin Ulysses: Kung Fu Monks in America" is really something else, and I'm not just saying that from the perspective of a student of Shaolin, but as a human being in general. It's really fascinating stuff.
Guys, it's really not about what move is hidden within the form. It's about how the form builds the body, and in what ranges of motions and joints the form builds the strength. The "applications" are just something supported by the proper strength and conditioning learned through the forms. Don't focus on the finger.
hey...good point. i agree with u. its about how the form builds the body. no matter how deadly the technique is...its kinda useless without the proper skill to execute it. just my opinion.
tell you something, these forms are almost always "marked". meaning they add something or change something so they know where you learned and to not show the real technique.
a perfect example of this is the form posted by jingwuman called "shaolin luohan quan" by shi yanzi. its completely jumbled on purpose.
thats shi yongxin's move. yanzi did it. as his disciple. and also as his disciples shi guolin's school does it.
These forms are all pretty old, and have been practiced outside shaolin for a long time, so offcourse many differences have evolved. Every school has differences in its forms.
Yanzi's version looks different because he turns the other way on the first rest stance. Shi Dejun's form also does this. At this time No-one can clame to know what the original version is.
But anyway, this form is not modernized, when you say this it gives people the wrong idea.
after the "three drunken steps":38 there is a whole sequence of grabs and strikes, turning around and striking in different directions while going the opposite way. :40
this section is not in deyang's form, decheng's form, nor xingxue's either.
these are the three version i've learned. they differ a lot. but none have these moves. there isnt even the downward block in xiebu before the kick going into "sleeping arhat". which is in all of them.
Cool, glad to see you know what your talking about. After the drunken steps both forms contain a series of palms followed by blocks. Deyang steps backward and blocks low, this guy foreward blocks high. This is a very minor difference. Considering the differences in even Da hong quan i've seen before, these two forms are pretty similar versions.
After watching both this and the deyang version 10 times now, they are really almost identical. If you train shaolin you should be able to spot this easily.
@mancholo WOW you're absolutely right. I am more knowledgeable about the Taizu Chang Quan. But the similarities are quite abundant, I am amazed at what brilliance has come out of the human mind. Think about developing this, or any form, for that matter... Amitofo
'His' Version is still the same form, all the moves are there and almost all the stances are the same. Offcourse deyang does it slower and more precisely, and the basics are a little different (every school has a slightly different version of this form). But doesn't have any 'modern' moves added. Search for 'shaolin xiao luohanquan' this is deyangs, watch them both and break it down.
i wasnt talking about prc wushu. i'm talking about shaolin. this is not the traditional way to do this form.
modernizing a form doesnt mean you need flips. its not modernized martial arts (prc wushu), its modernized shaolin, meaning movements changed to look cooler and move faster. big difference.
Actually this form is xiao luohan quan, this is NOT a modernized version. Even Deyang's version of this form is the same and his kung fu is not modernized. This guy is doing this very traditional form as a performance so he is not breaking down every move, still it is the traditional version.
Sure! Go to 'Jingwuman' profile, look for 'shaolin xiao luohanquan'. This is deyang's version. Unless you've trained a lot of shaolin you may find it difficult to break down the moves by watching. offcourse it is slightly different, but the same applications are placed in the same order.
It is not modernized you dumb ass. modernized kung fu has flips and other acrobatic kicks.did you see any acrobatic kicks? no i didn't think so. you are a dumb ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
coool real shaolin at its best xD Phew no flips

no no no, this isn't modernized. Luohan style falls right between traditional kung-fu and modern wushu. hence looking like a little of both.

It is about time somebody understands that it has a pinch of traditional style and modernized style.

its a safe bet that you've never trained with master deyang. 'his' version is not the same as this at all.

His forms and Shi Yan Ming's form were traditional and modernized. You also spelled Deyang wrong. His full name is Shi De Yang.
