Imagine the horror that Bob Markus saw that night on December 29, 1972. If I am correct 35 years later places them honoring him in 2007. What a story.
Well yes, it seams like so many events, for sure the pilots, and even the air traffic was not obligated to tell the captain that his altitude had dropped, he for sure should have reported the fact, it like a police man on a traffic job, sees some one trying to kill another person, but it is not his job, he is only for traffic violations so he does not do anything.
The air traffic controller SHOULD have reported they had dropped.
I have flown since 1967 and have more than 18000 hours on 737
ahh i was hoping in earlier parts that bob markus would be recognized for what he had done. many lives could of been lost, especially seeming the rescue teams couldn't see the crash site and he made them aware of its location.
This is before LEDs used for lighting switches apparently. A simple solution would be to have all buttons/indicators require 2 independent bulbs. If one burns out, the pilot still gets the information and also knows that maintenance needs to do a replacement. How many lights used in controls on this plane, a couple hundred at most? That would just add a negligible cost to eliminate this single point of failure.
There was indeed a problem with the light bulb in the polish air crash but it crashed because sovjets make shit planes, for example the crash with the tupolev, it got ripped apart when it did hit a tree, but normally planes survive more than 1 impact from a tree. So russian planes are SHIT
John Nance is the smartest man to investigate aviation accidents. This is a hobby of mine and one rarely hears ANYONE admitting they're human. It's the same with car accidents etc.
I feel to us it was 'the bulb wasn't working'...to them the implication was to attempt a crash landing and therefore...to prevent that scenario, they had to do whatever could be done to 'get that bulb to work' (to get get indication that that landing gear was ok).
I feel that was the psychological construct that did it....sad
whenever you get a bunch of people together it seems that one always has to be the leader, and when this happens, the team is a whle ceases to exist. stupid capt with a brain tumor that shoot doves. i bet he also kicked puppies and burned bibles...RIP to the innocent
Sure its sad for the 99 lives lost, but I think it was good in a way that it happened so they could change the training and learn alot from it, cause even if this one landed safley it wuold have happen to another plane sooner or later, they really got a lot of information that makes flying safer
An eerie fact that aligns well with the eeriness of this whole tragedy is the continuous reference of the avionics bay as the 'hell hole' in this episode.
i liked the more exciting and more action kind of ACI, like the JAL flight 123, or the aloha airlines flight 243 better. these ones are rather boring, but i watch them anyways for knowledge. every pilot should watch ACI, it might help them avoid a crash.
Ghosts!? Seriously!? And not only on some of the aircrafts that had scavenged parts, but even EAL aircrafts without scavenged parts? Are people retarded?
- Oh, and not only did they see ghosts on random aircrafts after the crash, but they saw UFO:s. But then Jesus showed up on a toast and saved us from the Yeti.
the guy who saved the people look like doyle brunson, the poker player, copy!almost thought that is him :) fo course big honour to him and rip to all others
The same think stupid light bulb was cause another air craft crash in 1980 il 62 crash in Warsaw for the same reason. if you wan to see this search for "kopernik" in yt.
u know the ghost thing is all in ppl heads and not actually real but still i liked it because it shows the crew of flight 401 is still alive in their hearts
another aircrash has happened in russia bcos of the disengagement of autopilot due to mechanical jerks... i think instead of a chime a siren could've caught the attention of the crew in both the cases
You are totally right. Allowing a kid to do such a thing is a huge mistake.
However, I have to note that they are not the only ones to blame. In a well degisned plane, the autopilot should never disengage without a significant warning. As we saw in this example, it can happen to an experianced pilot as well.
there was a beep, that came out of the engineer's desk, but as he was looking for the landing gear, he didn't here it. and the pilots were to fixed on getting the light bulb to work, they didnt here it.
@aabbii93here No that wasnt the ground proximity alarm, that was an alarm to tell the plane had passed 250mts below the set altitude. Ground proximty goes off as the plane nears the ground. That wasnt mentioned in this series.
2years ago when I was training out of a former air force base in California notorious for its ghost stories. Two fellow trainees pilots who had returned from a night time-building flight were taxiing back, they swore that they both saw a 747 landing. They claim that they heard noise and turned back to see the plane landing (unusual since there were no passenger ops there), they looked ahead as they were taxiing the plane, but when they turned back again, there wasn't any plane
you know that was my exact first thought that came to mind when I heard they reused the plane parts on other planes..
Its a perfect set up for a haunting..
If it's BS well then its BS..
But what if it isn't?
Why take that chance if you don't have to..
Never ever do that..
those parts should have been blessed first and then burried with or around or near to the deceased crew.. But never put back into service.. anyway It's also just creepy in itself to do that..
the reanactment of the Pan American and KLM was better here. it actually shows what the Klm would have looked like after it slammed into the Pan Am, rather than the "Crash of the Century" video just shows what the Pan Am looked like.
I'm surprised there were no survivors at all from the KLM - I doubt the impact of the forward fuselage with the runway would have been non-survivable, and there are no fuel tanks to explode in that section IIRC.

One thing to notice, The pilots from KLM seem to talk German instead of Dutch, which seems very odd to me.
Just a poor reconstruction I would say from the KLM crew. (Most Deadly from Discovery Channel)

But the pilot and his assistant should have notice a problem.
