You can make the same argument for free-market capitalism using most of these examples. Also, the federal reserve is a private institution that is completely unregulated by the government so that aspect is completely factually inaccurate. Also, the FDA probably cost millions of people their lives while we waiting for them to approve those drugs. Public schools suck and the postal service is bankrupt. @YourMindOnDrugz What I'm about to tell you is very important. After "Wrong" you should put a period. Ok, that's not important, but the next thing is: Goto wikipedia and search "sarcasm". I genuinely, sincerely wish you to read it very carefully and slowly. You obviously have what's called "mind blindness" and are incapable of understanding even _blatant_ sarcasm.
@YourMindOnDrugz I'm sorry. Maybe you just didn't know about the American Postal system and how it's a total, government subsidized, government enforced monopoly (price floors) failure
>"The phone service use to be controlled by the govornment"
Actually, you have this both backward and sideways. The phone service used to be controlled by Bell Telephone. It became a rapacious monopoly that had shit service at exorbitant prices. THEN it got broken up into many smaller companies, which began to compete....and to compete, they had to have better service and lower prices than their competitors.
>"Wrong, the free market could do most things better because capitalism breeds innovation."
Only up to a point. Once a corporation becomes powerful enough, it becomes less important to innovate, and becomes an obstacle to progress (because all the innovative startups "get their air supply cut off".)
Adam Smith's Invisible Hand spends way too much time being a fist, furiously masturbating a fat, lazy and complacent oligarchy of old guard "winners".
Never forget: A less than scrupulous "Producer of Goods" would happily sell you "ground beef" (aka horsemeat pickled with mercury) if it could increase their profit margin. "Regulatory Bodies" -- as fussy and annoying as they are -- at least try to keep the "Producers of Goods" on the straight and narrow.
Also, neevr forget: Part of the reason your standard of living is higher than those in Thailand or Somalia is that there are watchdogs.
>"A less than scrupulous "Producer of Goods" is more than happy to bribe the Regulatory Body to turn a blind eye to the sale of horsemeat pickled with mercury."
True. True. Yet, I'd rather have some regulation than no regulation...and not all regulators are so easily bribed.
>"However, businessmen and politicians both have equal capacity for good and evil."
Ah, but under current pseudo-capitalism, businessmen have no reason to NOT be Evil.
I would never think that all regulators are weak-willed and easily corrupted. However, I have to ask if you assume that all businessmen are prone to evil?
Read case law on ALCOA and GE (Think ALCOA was 1950s, and GE was 1960s... Could be wrong). Those are the two largest examples, but not isolated cases and events that show the ultimate power the government has over all companies operating in the United States. Our government can tear companies apart at whim, and the businesses have no legal precedent to resist. You will find a lot of the case law was plead "no contest."
The Gubmint is impotent nowadays. Today, It wouldn't BE ABLE to break up a predatory monopoly.
Hell, they couldn't even do anything about a glaring fraud like Enron (it helps when the CEO was best buds with President Bush).
The SEC has still, 4 years later, not done anything about the SCO Group pump-and-dump scam.
So, no. The Gubmint cannot "tear companies apart at whim" and MegaloCorporations can EASILY resist.... merely by not acknowledging their duty to society.
I think there are people in the energy sector who would balk at the statement that our government cannot directly impact their business.
I will have to look into the SCO before I can agree or disagree with you.
I'm just wanting to point out there is more to this than "black hats vs. white hats." You've been very reasonable in this discussion, so I am not assuming a denseness on your part. Just trying to offer a different perspective!
A less than scrupulous "Producer of Goods" is also equally happy with bribing the "Regulatory Body" to turn a blind eye while he or she sells the horsemeat pickled with mercury.
Your video was thought provoking: I had never considered the point you made. However, to give all the power to government under the assumption that they will always be altruistic and caring for the people is a bit gullible, wouldn't you agree?
Capitalists don't claim that the government is incapable of providing all the services you mention in your video, only that it doesn't do that efficiently. The government runs huge budget deficits to finance its operations, so while the people are provided with all those socialist goodies they get deeper and deeper into debt. Private, capitalist enterprises cannot run budget deficits, because that is equivalent to operating at a loss and it leads to bankruptcy.
And yet none of these "awesome socialists things" end up preventing what they're supposed to in full, nor are they run efficiently to a point where the debt is growing at an absurd level.
Your socialist everything can work provided you have the capital, but you don't and you'll find out sooner or later.
Aside from that, enjoy your false sense of security.
Truth... yet whenever shit goes wrong the government blames a 'lack' of regulation. Government is the problem NOT a solution. America hasn't been free for a very long time... WAKE UP PEOPLE!
@LonginusReborn I'm sorry no. The point is that you use 'socialism' everyday than complain that is doesn't work! The title is sarcastic. Government ownership isn't the big bad wolf that you say it is. That's what the video shows. WAKE UP!!
@salamut2202 Name one of these wonderful SOCIALIST government programs NOT billions in debt, please. My local police are bankrupt and borrowing money. Even NASA is being supplanted by "evil" private corporations (SpaceX, who is now planning to go to Mars). Socialism is a failed experiment... get over it; move on.
@LonginusReborn Hybis, hydro electric scheme, myschool, Education revolution, Solar initiative, the Australian water conservation programme, delta electricity, the telstra copper network. In progress is the national broardband network, the resource mining rent tax. There are a few examples from where I'm from - Australia. I have no idea why America can't get it's fucking act together on this. North Europe, Canada and Aaustralia all have a higher standard of living.Guess what they have in common?
@salamut2202 Gee I wonder what they have in common? Perhaps the $1 Trillion debt (SOURCE: News.com.au - May 2nd, 2010) your country has accrued to pay for all this idiocy? Thank you for proving my point.
@LonginusReborn Yes our country, the one that got out of the GFC without going into recession. By a left wing party I might ad. Those evil socialist that are well on track of getting us in the black by 2013/14. But the debt accumulated is not government's fault as far as regulation - it's capitalism's fault why they're in debt in the first place.
@salamut2202 True capitalism is free market economics — and we've already established that your market isn't. Evil corporations cannot create national debt unless the government is subsidizing them, ergo Socialism — NOT Capitalism. Only your government spends its treasury.
Right wing? Left wing? You're both more alike then you'd ever admit. Stop assuming you're speaking to someone who bends to accommodate the opinions of others.
@LonginusReborn And capitalism must be regulated to give everyone a fighting chance lest we descend into feudalism. In pure economic terms capitalism is the throttle and socialism is the steering wheel and brake. Without this control those who have made money make their own opportunities to make more money while those who loose out, sometimes from circumstances not of their making, have less influence to make opportunities and loose out further. Conservatives are aware of this, idiots are not.
@salamut2202 "Capitalism must be regulate to give everyone a chance..." Wrong. Who will watch the watchmen? No one can be trusted with this job. "...lest we descend into feudalism." That's what free markets are: competition. It's not a the demon you think it is.
As for the rest of your comment? Look up "Keynes Vs. Hayek: Fight of the Century".
I don't need to government to step in and be my mommy and daddy because I'm too scared of the big bad world to go it alone. I don't fail at life.
@LonginusReborn "This person is on the left of politics and sees the flaws in capitalism. He must be poor and fail at life"-That was ad hominem at best.
We aren't what we work for. You may think that but we're not. Some people have crappy parents, some people live in awful areas some people have differing abilities and disabilities. We aren't all twins and just 1 generation later of pure capitalism would see use inequalities. I've seen Capitalism fail so many times I see no reason to keep as is
@salamut2202 lrn2read: both Left and Right screw up capitalism as neither can see past their own special interests to the bigger picture.
You've never seen pure capitalism fail. GOVERNMENT regulates it out of existence. Capitalism is human nature — the right to life, liberty and property. Socialism destroys those rights until everything is owned by the state and there is no need to strive for anything. A bleaker existence I could not imagine.
The crux of the matter is you're scared of failure.
@LonginusReborn When banks get greedy or people suffer, when Wal Street is making record profits but no one can hire, when a small industrial town's state owned and very prosperous and profit churning employers and infrastructure is privatized and people suffer for it -That's capitalism failing.
Humans are social cretures. In the hardest of times you see the best of people - people aren't selfishly pragmatic or logical. They are, for the most part, altruistic. Capitalism favours nothing to this
@salamut2202 Banks get greedy because the GOVERNMENT is in BED with them — same with industry. Don't you think it a bit odd that they're all FEDERALLY insured? What planet do you live on? Government involvement is and always has been the PROBLEM.
You operate on half the facts then commit the fatal conceit of thinking controlling another's free will or property is the road for freedom for all. It's the opposite and will create nothing but two castes: masters and slaves.
And excuse me but Altruism and Egoism are both parts of the sentient human condition.
I'm going to be a generous person on my own accord, not because somebody else tells me to.
Everyone has the capacity to do good and evil. The balance between them is what makes us human.
I'm not going to assume you are scared of failure but forced Altruism(taxes to pay for Socialism) upon a populus invokes the danger of widespread Apathy towards personal success.
@LtSurge659 I'm not sayinf Capitalism runs on greed. It's part of it but of coarse it isn't all it is. All I'm saying is that is can't work on it's own. If the economy was a car, capitalism is the throttle, socialism is the steering wheel and break. We NEED both to both go somewhere and not crash.I like to think, when I walk by a public school that I'm helping educate those kids, I like to think that I own some of the road I drive on and I like to think the police kinda work for me. We need both
I agree that we need both because too much of a good thing is bad. Just like the balance of power within Government. However, I see a lot of wasteful spending within the Public sector that is paid by us.
And I don't want to pay over 9000 taxes for an unkempt road, a failing school and other mismanaged "departments" that otherwise could have been kept Private with Public regulations and performed much better.
@LtSurge659 Out of curiosity, what's your nationality? I have a general gist of how most developed nations spend their money. In Australia we have a few blow outs but most of your infrastructure is pretty well kept.
@LtSurge659 Then your problems is at the least wasteful spending, rather, spending in the wrong places. You have a bloated military budget while the schools plead for resources. It's a care for too much of national interests outside the border than domestic ones. That isn't an ideological issue.
@LonginusReborn Secondly I have no fear of failure. I'm rather resilient, not bragging but I've dug myself out of even other people's holes. I come from a family of business men-my farther starting the city's first ISP, My grandfather starting a signature retail store in this town, My great grandfather starting a medical practice. He was a communist, my pop was a socialist, my dad is also left leaning. They were all rather successful and all saw that to pour money back in a community was rare.
@LonginusReborn Warning: this is what happens when a socialist breaks the ad homenim statement of the preconception that all socialists are lazy people who are scared of failure.
The vid starts by pointing out that your alarm clock runs on electricity. Yes, gubmint bureaucrats 'regulate' it, but it was an INDIVIDUAL who harnessed it and it has been individuals - never governments - who put it to its most creative uses.
A few Q's for Leftards who recommend this video -
do you have an i-pod?
do you do your shopping online?get your news online? have u ever downloaded music "for free"?
If so, you are far more LIBERTARIAN than u realize.
All that stuff you said is socialist is the best stuff about the USA. Cool!
I have considered myself a "socialist" since I learned about economic systems sometime in public middle school.
I view capitalism as un-christian and immoral. I also support direct democracy over representative. Socialism can only exist with direct democracy or no government because when connected with rule by the few socialism turns into a way of justifying the rulers control over everything of value.
I'm not happy about it, but its a rare, rare event when handing control over to a megalocorporation does anything but make matters worse.
It's bad enough when public utilities malfunction due to laziness and incompetence......but the only other current option is deliberate price-gouging, contempt and no accountability.
"Well, atleast the corperation does not have any official power over you."
The last couple of decades or so have been chock full of rights-abridging laws enacted on behalf of megalocorportations; An obvious example is the DMCA enacted on behalf of RIAA.
"Coperations do not own you or have the right to kill you if you do not obey them."
Karen Silkwood would disagree.
Also, both the Iraq and Afghan wars are for the benefit of Weapons and Oil companies.
America is not some kind of military Junta that dissapears dissidents....at least not yet.
We still (for now) have the right to trial by jury.
"Thats why i'm in favor of the night-watch state. A state who only protects your rights, not medle in your personal life."
I agree whole-heartedly. But the same people who emit the loudest bitching about "socialism" in this country....are nosy bastards who want to interfere in your life.
"But the same people who emit the loudest bitching about "socialism" in this country....are nosy bastards who want to interfere in your life."
Would not know anything about that, i'm from a socalist country. Sweden.
We are bloody communists compared to USA. And still people in you'r country bitch about "Socialism" I dont get it.
And i'm just saying that the goverment have a monopoly on violence, and that why you need to limit their power. Privatized health-care is one way to do that.
I'm just going to say one thing, about your last comment on socialized health care.
Read the book The Last Centurion. Only need the first 100 pages or so. It is fiction, and you will scream REPUBLICAN SCUM. But it makes a many good points on socialized medicine, that can indeed be backed up by just a little research.
Sometimes, fiction is the best way to make a point, no?
@psychokittyboy No, not really. Also with a name like "psychokittyboy" I'm going to assume you have Aspergers Syndrome and anything you say is null and void due to your mental illness.
Let's try to keep it civil in here. Argumentum Ad Hominem are poor arguments; and random accusations of mental illness against random people on the interweb are null and void because you are merely another random person on the interweb, and we can't evaluate your credentials as a licensed psychotherapist.
>implying that the FCC, USDA, FDA, DOT, EPA, Federal Reserve, and Public Schools are good things, and that these things (and everything non-defense related) couldn't be done better by the private sector.
Re: the USDA, FDA and EPA....the private sector would do a piss poor job of policing the quality of food/drugs/air...because ensuring the public good is costly and it wouldn't make the private sector any profit. In fact, the private sector would gleefully drop trou and prostitute itself at the first possible opportunity.
Re: FCC...if it stuck to just doling out frequencies, instead of poking their nose into "content", i'd have no issue with them. The current FCC can go eat a bag of dicks.
1-Go live in europe, every country here is socialist
2-Learn what proper socialism is, and enjoy your better life

@LtSurge659 I'm not sayinf Capitalism runs on greed. It's part of it but of coarse it isn't all it is. All I'm saying is that is can't work on it's own. If the economy was a car, capitalism is the throttle, socialism is the steering wheel and break. We NEED both to both go somewhere and not crash.I like to think, when I walk by a public school that I'm helping educate those kids, I like to think that I own some of the road I drive on and I like to think the police kinda work for me. We need both
salamut2202 9 months ago
@salamut2202
LtSurge659 9 months ago
@LtSurge659 Out of curiosity, what's your nationality? I have a general gist of how most developed nations spend their money. In Australia we have a few blow outs but most of your infrastructure is pretty well kept.
salamut2202 9 months ago
@salamut2202
United States.
LtSurge659 9 months ago
@LtSurge659 Then your problems is at the least wasteful spending, rather, spending in the wrong places. You have a bloated military budget while the schools plead for resources. It's a care for too much of national interests outside the border than domestic ones. That isn't an ideological issue.
salamut2202 9 months ago
@LonginusReborn Secondly I have no fear of failure. I'm rather resilient, not bragging but I've dug myself out of even other people's holes. I come from a family of business men-my farther starting the city's first ISP, My grandfather starting a signature retail store in this town, My great grandfather starting a medical practice. He was a communist, my pop was a socialist, my dad is also left leaning. They were all rather successful and all saw that to pour money back in a community was rare.

@salamut2202 **no one cares about your life. This is the Internet which means you are lying by default.

@LonginusReborn Warning: this is what happens when a socialist breaks the ad homenim statement of the preconception that all socialists are lazy people who are scared of failure.

Aren't Lefties clever?

And you see no problem with the goverment having such influence?
Skjutentrast 1 year ago
I'm not happy about it, but its a rare, rare event when handing control over to a megalocorporation does anything but make matters worse.
It's bad enough when public utilities malfunction due to laziness and incompetence......but the only other current option is deliberate price-gouging, contempt and no accountability.

Well, atleast the corperation does not have any official power over you.
Coperations do not own you or have the right to kill you if you do not obey them.
The goverment do.
Thats why i'm in favor of the night-watch state. A state who only protects your rights, not medle in your personal life.

(part 1 of 2)
"Well, atleast the corperation does not have any official power over you."

"Also, both the Iraq and Afghan wars are for the benefit of Weapons and Oil companies. "
Liberated Iraq recently awarded oil contracts to Chinese, Dutch and Malaysian companies.
US companies didn't even make bids.
Really, some of you idiot Lefties need to update your stupid slogans and your pathetic groupthink.

"The goverment do."

Skjutentrast 1 year ago
"And still people in your country bitch about 'Socialism' I dont get it."
Well, America is fucked up. Anything to the left of Pat Buchannan is treated like the reanimated corpse of Lenin.
"And i'm just saying that the goverment have a monopoly on violence, and that why you need to limit their power."
And I say that nobody should have a monopoly on anything, especially violence.
LordCustos3 1 year ago
I'm just going to say one thing, about your last comment on socialized health care.
Read the book The Last Centurion. Only need the first 100 pages or so. It is fiction, and you will scream REPUBLICAN SCUM. But it makes a many good points on socialized medicine, that can indeed be backed up by just a little research.
Sometimes, fiction is the best way to make a point, no?
psychokittyboy 2 years ago
@psychokittyboy No, not really. Also with a name like "psychokittyboy" I'm going to assume you have Aspergers Syndrome and anything you say is null and void due to your mental illness.
badnewranger 1 year ago
@badnewranger
Because that totally makes your points more valid! Ignore, sidestept, INSULT! TRUELY, A MASTER TACTICIAN IS YOU!
Also, someone may want to take English I. Refresh one's memory on the Great Gatsby.
psychokittyboy 1 year ago
@badnewranger
Now. Now.
Let's try to keep it civil in here. Argumentum Ad Hominem are poor arguments; and random accusations of mental illness against random people on the interweb are null and void because you are merely another random person on the interweb, and we can't evaluate your credentials as a licensed psychotherapist.
LordCustos3 1 year ago
@badnewranger Thats pretty rude. My girlfriend has Aspergers. Im pretty sure I'd respect her word more than yours.

>implying that the FCC, USDA, FDA, DOT, EPA, Federal Reserve, and Public Schools are good things, and that these things (and everything non-defense related) couldn't be done better by the private sector.
HerrSchenkel 2 years ago
Re: the USDA, FDA and EPA....the private sector would do a piss poor job of policing the quality of food/drugs/air...because ensuring the public good is costly and it wouldn't make the private sector any profit. In fact, the private sector would gleefully drop trou and prostitute itself at the first possible opportunity.
Re: FCC...if it stuck to just doling out frequencies, instead of poking their nose into "content", i'd have no issue with them. The current FCC can go eat a bag of dicks.
