  • this is sad

  • Charles Dickens had a lot to do with telling about hardship of the poorer citizens of England. This musical adaption did a good job at keeping that spirit.

  • This musical has the BEST soundtrack I've ever heard, simply beautiful

  • id buy it right away hes so cute

  • the undertaker reminds me of Hugh Laurie

  • "only seven guineas" "how much?!?" "seven guineas" are you retarded who do you think you are?!?"

  • Wow at mr bumbles last note!

  • Sad. :( Give him food and drink. Sad how people were once treated.

  • lol owned at 0:42

  • How anyone can think of that little boy as labor and not as an adorable boy to take in and love like their own :(

  • At 1:30 the Baker doesn't even realise he is about to win the auction. Just casually strides away.

  • Is Mr. Bumble a retired sea captain since it looks like he is wearing a ship captain's uniform and a ship captain's hat and just carries a stick just to scare the orphans?

  • @afriendofbean

Mr Bumble (love that name) is a Parochial Beadle-glorified security guard with room & board.

  • @VValkyrie I didn't know that. Thank you.

  • @afriendofbean Mr. Bumble is the Parish Beadle (the parish being the neighbourhood or land in direct control of the local church). He was a church official who was in charge of local affairs, keeping law and order (this is in a time before police) and attending to various local civil administrative duties (such as matters concerning workhouse orphans like Oliver).

  • @Shangas I remember seeing people dressed like Mr. Bumble in a church when I read the book "The Red Balloon" where I saw pictures of people dressed like that when reading the book but, I didn't know that Mr. Bumble was someone who used to work in a church.

  • @afriendofbean Not IN the church, perse. He worked in the parish. The land that the church controlled.

  • @Shangas Okay. Thank you for letting me know. I also did think that Mr. Bumble was a pirate too since pirates wore hats like him and the way how he acts rude towards Oliver is probably the way a pirate would act. Thank you again.

  • @afriendofbean It's called a bicorne hat (bi-corner - Two corners). It came into fashion in the early 1800s after the tricorne hat went out in the 1790s. It was soooo last century.

  • @Shangas That's a great thing to know about Mr. Bumble's hat that went on in the early 1800s.

  • Mr. Bumble sang this song great but, I wonder why he had to sing to sell Oliver in the street.

  • so good :)

  • I didn't realize there was so much snow in England *winks

  • Oliver is so adorable!

  • 12 Paedophiles didn't get to buy Oliver.

  • What a voice! He could knock down buildings with that.

  • I always heard it as "only seven pennies" .

  • 2:27 "ah 7 guineas for the boy."

    Guy: "Wait what??"

Singing guy: "You wanna buy the kid right?"

Guy: "Oh no, I was gonna say stop singing." But thats a great musical

  • 1000 pennies? Isn't that 10 dollars?

  • @96Nathan96 I was thinkin 100 dollars.. lol! that was all i thought about while hearing this song! XD

  • @MizzyLexis94 :) My best friend Rachel just sent this to me one random day...

  • @96Nathan96 Not everything is in dollars.

  • @Saartje05 I know, which is why I said what it equals to, I'm comparing the past to the future...

  • Love harrys voice he could hold a note forever.

  • yeah so he is in diagon alley years before his time

  • the guy singing i like hi voice.

  • The boy oliver is so hot x i wonder how old he is now x if u know plz tell me x

  • @utubecarer Mark Lester? He's 53 now...

  • @96Nathan96 You realise that this is in a time and place where there was no decimal currency? Pounds, shillings, guineas, pennies. Besides, Britain has NEVER used dollars.

  • @commradefyedka Yeah... I'm just saying though...

  • 1:44 Yes Oliver, look up, he clearly flew away.

  • Pedobear will beat that.

  • okay so i want to play Mr. Bumble or Fagin. i like Fagin better, but i like the song Bumble sings here. i hope i at least get one part.lol. if not off to audition for Dorothy Meets Alice

  • @kailanikcmz Yes, I also like Mr. Bumble and Fagin. I guess if I was going to audition for one of them I would like to choose Mr. Bumble since I'm not very good at memorizing lines since Fagin has more lines than Mr. Bumble probably because Fagin is a main character and Mr. Bumble is not.

  • my friend was in it and she was oliver and when she had to climb a something and she fell done it only 3 feet

  • It is because of this scene that I would place this movie in my opinion as great as Gone with the Wind.

  • I just tried and i was able to hold that note...oh yeah ....does the happy dance...

  • 11 people were just sold.

  • awwwwwwwwwww Oliver's so cute....

  • @mic32vic31 of course

  • such a great cast in this movie (although oliver was a bit of a sissy,- they should have allowed him to play up in his role a bit more). you hardly ever see musicals successfully turned into movies but I think this one was.

  • Wasn't slavery illigale in UK by then?

  • @TheDerekneseEmporer yes but this is "adoption"

  • @1StarRed Then shouldn't he say "bor for adoption" or did they make this song in order to make look like a jerk?

  • @TheDerekneseEmporer boy I meant.

  • @TheDerekneseEmporer actually since he was in the care of the work house they can charge what they like. Though the second he would turn 16 or 18 they would have to let him go

  • @TheDerekneseEmporer It's not slavery. Poorhouses would sell the rights to take in orphan boys as apprenctices, but the boys were not bound to their masters (as in master artisan, not slave master) one they became legal adults.

  • i just sang this in my school show last nitee :D we done songs from different musicals and i got to be mr bumble x i had to sing the hymn bit, screamm MORE ! and sing boy for salee x and im a girll :D i can hit the low notes :))

  • What a voice....

  • beautifully made musical. Gorgeous acting by all the cast. As a movie fan, this movies sits in top ten of my alltime great movies.

  • 0:43 POW!

  • i would so do this with my little brother

"ONE LEOOOOOOO, LEO FOR SAAAAAAAAAAAAALE! HE'S GOING CHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAP! ONLY 7 DOLLARS!"

  • What an incredibly beautiful voice!

  • Harry Seacombe is the cream of the crop. =) Whoot! Whooot. That's why it gets stuck so easily in ppls heads this song.

  • No wonder why no one will buy Oliver. Cause the guy singing is scary o.O

  • Harry Secombe was such a talented man. A singer, actor and comedian - a true inspiration

  • The word gets out that you are the boy in Joel 3:3 who makes house calls for harlots... and everyone in the world wants to take advantage of you..

  • You gotta upload the whole thing. PLEASE!

  • the title made me smirk :)

  • havent heard this song since i was in fifth grade. and i still know it XD

  • I played him in my school play when I was 11 :)

Im a girl by the way..

I wasnt in an all girls school.

  • @TheCiaraReddy ya i play oliver atm and im girl too xD

  • @xxmissunderstoodxx19 :) Good Luck.

I watched the Dvd of it the other day..

    Its quite hard. :L

  • @TheCiaraReddy i played Romeo... I was eight n I wasnt in a all girls school either. Ouch.

  • Fantastic voice Harry had, best song in the film this.

  • The price goes from 7 guineas (7 pounds 7 shillings, or 1764 pennies) down to 1000 pennies (just under 4 guineas), then to 3 pounds 10 shillings (840 pennies), then he finally sells him to the undertaker for 3 guineas (3 pounds 3 shillings, or 756 pennies).

  • @violacrb That's about right for the time, Thomas Hardy's Mayor of Casterbridge sold his wife for 5 guineas, that would of been 1890 time.

  • Harry Secombe rocks my socks.

  • love this bass voice, dun think other actors can pull this kind of sound..

  • @simpledaylife He's a tenor.

  • @hairwire lol.. thanks

  • @simpledaylife I beg your pardon, but Harry Seacombe was a tenor...and a very fine one.

  • at about :23 seconds : He wants to sell Oliver for what....... 7 Italians? Perhaps to cook his daily consumption of his favorite pasta !!

  • He is the best singer ever ever ever!

  • mmm yeah.. he holds it for 14 seconds!! Meanwhile, I almost asphyxiated.

  • gosh he can hold a note for time

  • @kh9234 It's easier with the vibrato

  • Beautiful sad song!

  • waaaah. dont sell him. educate him. : /

  • Incredible film.....and the last note in this song....he seems to hold it forever. This is the standard all musicals try to attain.Only a few have gotten close. None have surpassed OLIVER.

  • @nfldude28 He Has A Large Diaphram To Back It Up :)

  • @nfldude28 Seacombe had an extraordinary voice. He could have had an opera career, but chose comedy and musicals.

  • @nfldude28 Oliver is an amazing musical, in my opinion though, POTO surpasses it by a mile :D

  • @nfldude28 so well said-- i loved this movie too- seen it on big screnn when i was 11- im 53 now-- still love it-- especialy jack wild

  • Such a moving film.... and its music just captivates you...

This is one of my favourite songs.... melancholic and sad, but ever so beautiful!

  • I love that voice!

  • This is so sad but he sounds Lovely

  • Wow, i never get tired of hearing that voice!

  • Our school is performing this soon, and the piano part gives you a really good chance to see what all of the orchestra's doing. I thought it sounded quite east asian. Really nice blend, but unusual.

  • I love this song, but why are these people arguging I mean... 10 bucks?? WHAT A STEAL!!!!! I'd buy him! (But than again I'm jewish...)

  • @EYDstudios I'm pretty sure that much money was worth a lot more in the 1800's.

  • @Ealenno There were 244 pennies to every pound then.

  • @Ealenno What I meant was, 10 bucks for OLIVER!!! 10 bucks for such a boy is quite a steal.

  • @EYDstudios Oh okay then yeah, I agree

  • @EYDstudios Fagin?!!?!?!?!?

  • @Donnoliel May we note that Fagin didn't pay a cent for Oliver. He makes me proud. ;)

  • even with all of oliver's great songs like 'reviewing the situation' 'Pick a Pocket' and 'who will buy' this osng is still my favourite simply for its simplicity and lovley melody

  • 1000 pennies? $10! thats a steal!

  • You know, I said exactly the same thing, when I went to the petrol station for a gallon of petrol, HOW MUCH

  • Oliver! This movie is awesome, remakes to this date pale in comparison.

  • @JuanMacready Overall, the film was better than the West End Version (that I saw). Stage musicals are usually better than the film but a story like Oliver Twist needs a little less music and a little bit more story. The film version has much more of a Dickens feel to it.

JuanMacready, It seams like you just don't like it because it's slightly American made.

  • Sir Harry could SING! This is what you get from a TRUE operatic tenor_ and a first class Welsh comedian, too. Cymru am byth!

  • @mseaborne wow... thats the first welsh comment I have ever seen on youtube!! you just made my day :D

  • This is the US Republican "education" plan in a nutshell...

  • The dude is evil but man can he sing

  • Yes!

  • Mr. Bumble is the bomb, dude knows how to sing.

  • three pounds what sir? certainly not sir!!!!!

  • Mr. Bumble!! :D

    + I <3 Oliverrrrr

  • I love this song, although I don't say it in public. These days everyone would think that a song called "Boy for Sale" would come from NAMBLA, the Musical.

  • Love love this song so much!

  • This film's from 1968, not 1969.... Just thought I'd point that out...

  • For some strange reason this whole scene has "Innuendo" labeled all over it!

  • best version of "oliver" ever !

  • :19 Was that a [not so] subtle message that Bumble is a horse's ass?

  • I'd buy Oliver and give him more food!

  • i like this song

  • 14 second note, nice

  • I LOVE that hat Mr Bumble is wearing!

  • @KingOystar He kind of looks like Napoleon.

  • I was JUSt cast as Mr. Bumble in our community theater's production of this play. We'll see how THIS goes.

  • RIP Harry Secombe you will be missed!

  • lmao

  • he sure can sing

  • The late ,great Harry Secombe. Goon,Welshman ,comedian and simply the greatest tenor EVER !

  • I really love his voice.

  • Somehow this loses its seriousness once you realise it's Neddie Seagoon selling Oliver to Reginald Iolanthe Perrin.

  • @harley333man

a rather sinister looking reginald iolanthe perrin

  • The most famous tenor of all time mario alanza said he wished he had this man's voice as he was amazing.

  • what a voice!!!

  • A boy for me to keep for just one thousand pennies? Hot damn I'll take him! LOL

  • They should have kept the "That's Your Funeral" number.

  • @JuanMacready I could see that in this movie.

  • @RosesNightengales This film is nowhere near as good as the current West End version.

  • Hairy Secombe all the way

  • oh crap I was waiting for a bunch of priest to come running out any minute

  • @kyolym Hahahahaha

  • I might be a naive 22 year old that favors such films as Rambo 4, Taken, the Die Hard series ETC, but this film is definately one of my all time favorites XD

    (along with Disneys Aladdin) *blushes*

  • @MustardLung your also quite clearly a puf

  • There's just something about this song........long live the movie musical!

  • Principal Skinner: Boy For Sale! Boy For Sale!

Jimbo Jones: Is this legal, man?

Principal Skinner: Only here, and in Mississippi.......

  • Leonard Rossiter looks really sinister in this
