Hello Tom, hope you have a good, memorable journey. Since you mentioned visiting Sri Lanka too, why don't you give Thansher's Aromatic Tobacco a try? It's grown and blended in Sri Lanka, could be a good experience.
@backcountrypipe Mark, I'm really just tagging along with my friends, who did all the planning - so it's an easy trip in that regard. Then, after two weeks, we'll split up and they'll head north to Nepal, and I'll stay in the south and disappear into a mediation retreat, then meet them back at the airport in Delhi on February 16. I'm departing January 16.
You pronounce Latakia the way I always did until I heard other smokers here on YouTube pronounce it with stress on the 'i' rather than the second 'a'. I'm glad to know that I wasn't so wrong after all, and will stop struggling with pronouncing it the other way. Even if I'm wrong, at least I have company. Thanks!
I had the opportunity to visit Hyderabad, India a few years back. Watch out for that heat, it was nothing I have experienced. Make sure to get some pearls too, they're known to be some of the best. Enjoy your trip! Oh, before I forget, I got a hold of a refinished handmade kaywoodie from ebay and it's my favorite smoke aside from the custombilt. Great vid Tom
Have a great trip Tom.Would be nice if you could make some pipe vids from India.I would bring my corn cobs, that way there would be no tears if they were lost.
Tom i have a kaywoodie handmade, and love it. Always on the lookout for a good deal on more. I think I'd intentionally forget pipes, so i could have an excuse to buy them on my journey. The pepper in India is something you must try. Then when you return, our black pepper will not suffice. I've never been, nit i had a friend bring me some as a gift once
what takes you to India? wow cool trip. i pack a stubby one, a cob, and maybe a billiard something, then i am set. cobs make new things taste good, and wont cry over them.
I've only got 4 pipes in my collection currently. (waiting for 2 more in the mail) If I had to leave today, I'd probably take my Missouri Meerschaum. It's cheap, smokes well, and if it breaks or gets lost, it isn't a big loss. I'd worry too much about my Meerschaum pipe getting broken to take it, and the other 2 pipes are crappy Chinese pipes that taste like furniture polish when they are smoked.
@TheRolfiden - I do think the Jums would smoke better if the bowl were taller, but they have a heft and style that are difficult to equal. And they give you a 'dog with a bone in his mouth' look when you smoke - priceless!

That is a great little shop. Odd, but nice. He is the one that turned me onto Samuel Gawith.

@Pipescratch - Good idea, but I've got the one cob, and it's a big one. At this moment I'm thinking the CustomBilt billiard and the Eric King poker.

@TheBaccyButcher That's a good idea for gifts, though I might be hard-pressed to find room to bring enough back.
