  • Would you say that he was an early proponent of the totalitarian state or a champion of socialism and democracy?

  • This is wrong. Rousseau says that the people should create the laws. NOT the legislator. He says laws "must come from all and apply to all". All should create the laws and the legislator should enforce them

  • I think Louis XV and Rousseau had a bit of a tiff over literary content!

  • brilliant, thank you

  • This is great. Merci.

  • Is heated philosophical discussion the late night, pay by the minute kind?

Sorry, couldn't help myself :) I'm watching this then posting something intelligent (hopefully!).

  • Republic...

  • most of my heros have either gone crazy or drank themselves to death and sometimes i feel like i am about to make a decision..."the creed of a savoyard vicar" is the best thing ever written to describe the human spirit... god bless JJR... ( "god" being "the force that gave life to nature and motion to the universe") p.282 from "emile"

  • Thank you so much for this! I may now pass my exam thanks to you!

  • The expression "forced to be free" sounds like Orwellian "double-speak," if I understand that term correctly. Rousseau seems to contradict himself with this.

  • @Sigolet I'm reading Rousseau at University - 'forced to be free' sound like the two concepts are contradictory, but he means free in the sense of the social contract (laws) which enables man to be truly free - man can only (for Rousseau) be at his best, his freest; within political society enforced by the state's authority - though with the citizen's consent... consent is vital for Rousseau as the citizens are the third pillar of society, along with the state and social contract. Is he right?

  • Great! Thank-you! I am completely new to philosophy but have harboured a desire for many years to "get with the program." I am not yet in a position to enter into a heated philosophical discussion with you, but maybe one day? With appreciation...
