this is the way this song should be done, but with his normal voice. has this been recorded by him on another cd by any chance?? the best version I've heard.
Thanks. It was hard filming because the cameras were not allowed and we had to hide.. The sound is from our minidisc.
Despite his sickness (or maybe because of it), Rufus was never as moving and entertaining as that night. I saw him cry. He had a standing vation at the end. Deserved.
I think this is the night he really became the star he had always wanted to be.
You are pathedic and cold hearted.Rufus was terribly sick,he couldnt even talk and still he insisted to continue the show. That is signs of a TRUE entertainer,I'm sure not even Judy had done that.
Um, EXCUSE ME. Miss Garland was much sicker than this moron almost every single time she performed in much of her later life. But still, she went on. And believe me, Judy at her worst, isn't even anywhere near in comparison to this guy at his best. THANK YOU.
Well, ya know what, buddy. I didn't watch it because I refuse to watch that crap. You actually believe that garbage? Heheh. Shows how much you know. ;)
I think he did a good job, its his own version of the song. everyone gets sick . lets not get angry or make a big deal of something so little. Its music, lets just enjoy it
If the promised CD/DVD comes anyhere close to the performance in this clip, it will be a real tribute. Here he has closely realized Judy's idea, combining her arrangement with the natural innocence and youthfulness of his voice. By his usual straight vocalism, his only way of singing, he avoids the cliches that would make this just another "I Can't Give You Anything but Love".
My previous comment leaves out Rufus' composing. His song, "The Maker Makes" is the reason I have taken an interest in his work. That song has a magical affect on me because of the song and the singing.
Rufus' main thing is voice. It is great that he loves Verdi, loves Judy. As a child of the 1940's, I agree that he is not totally familiar with the swing element that was such an important part of Judy's style and the more subtle vocal conventions of swing. It doesn't matter. I feel sorry for those who don't respond to his singing.
Rufus was very very sick, he could hardly even swalow and still, he gave the audience the best. Everyone had a great time, he was very moving. I wouldn't exchange the memory of that night with anyone else that had Rufus not sick. It made it very special, as we all understood the pain he was in and couldn't help beeing on his side... Something really happened between him and the crowd.
What a tribute to Judy : he was just prooving how much he loved her ...
other singers would most likely cancel the show rather than sing when sick, so major props to rufus for caring that much about his fans to not deprive them of his charismatic stage presence! it's a shame he couldn't talk (as some have said) since his on-stage musings to the audience are so much fun!
Sorry, I was being rude, and you expressed your opinion in a polite way, which doesn't happen often here. The fact is that many people attack him saying that he can't hit those notes, even if it's quite obvious that he wasn't in great form that night...If you hate his voice, that's ok. I hate many singers' voices!
Can't you see that he couldn't sing?he couldn't speak at all!He couldn't hit the notes because he had one third of his voice left, because of a bad cold and not because he can't sing. Stop it please
Not only does he copy everything Judy did including her innunciation...he's trying to sing it in her original key and can't hit the notes. Give me the real Judy Garland any day. Reminds me of a quote: "Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else." -Judy Garland, 1922-1969
He had a sore throat, and he was great despite all this.Have you ever tried to sing with a laryngitis? He couldn't even speak, but he pulled off a great concert nonetheless.
I love the way Rufus does this song, especially how he enunciates "baby." He really puts heart and soul into a song that many performers sing by route. I don't think he's trying to tell the world that he is as good as Judy ... he is a different person with a different style. I admire him for singing her show in his own way. There's no drag involved here. I like him for coming on stage as himself. Judy would have, too.
Judy Garland herself sang many a concert with a bad throat..and sometimes to greater effect...Nobody these days, except rufus, could pull this off...with or without a cold.
Before anyone says anything about him not hitting those few high notes, please realize that he performed with strep throat this night. Taking that into account, I think he does an amazing job here.
Well, clearly you never actually commented on this video. You just said you thought "the whole project" was crap. That implies that you had prior knowledge of and exposure to the whole Rufus/Judy thing and just chose to voice your disdain on this particular video. Anyone with a quarter of a brain could see that:)
I'm not angry at all, hence the use of smiley emoticons:) I would view this more as friendly banter, but you can think whatever you want. You're the one who threw the first stone, dear. I'm merely responding.
thats fine but you dont have to throw rocks do you and everytime i reply to you i have to listen to this rufus guy wailing his lungs out what a life!!
I like his voice but tilting his head back is a real bad habit for sining. It tightens the larynx.

This is his best version of the song. Thank you so much for uploading it, it's still in my favourites.

great interpretation of a classic song.lovely arrangement too. whats that about out of tune...i dont think so...hes just not typical and predictable.
he does a great job, especially if hes having throat troubles.I dont get the fuss with Judy ...and im gay...

I wish he'd redo this with a fresh healthy throat. It is so spectacular by him otherwise.

What a horrendous voice. He sounds like a drunken drag queen singing OUT OF TUNE. Pity, because both the song and the arrangements are nice.
