Awesome, I've found most people who teach how to tune a drum explain it like the other person knows exactly what they're talking about and how it's "supposed" to sound. Thanks for the tips, I've been looking for a while for that 'deep' and 'whole' sound instead of the crack my snare was giving.
drum dial.. I seem to break a lot of "rules" with tuning, I made up my own and my snare sounds just fine. I think when people have issues with tuning, they probably just lack common sense.. But, new heads and good shells ALWAYS make a big difference! (comment not aimed towards uploader)
Dude, detuning the two rods closest to me gave my drum so much depth. It's a steel drum and almost sounds as warm as a wood, but the attack wasn't affected in the least. It's an AWESOME sound. Thanks for sharing man!
i need some help. im a newbie to snare drums, one of my family's friends just gave me a drum kit. the snare drum sounds really weird, and the snares rattle a lot for about 3 or 4 seconds after i hit it. i tried tightening them up, but they still do the same thing. any tips?
Just a quick (stupid) question, my wires have made little little little holes on my reso' head (located where the wires are hold by the string...). So i've changed the head but i'm scared it happens again. Should i change the wires, or is there any way to avoid this?
@ptitepoulettedu91 Hey, it sounds like your wires might've been the problem - sometimes they aren't soldered very well at the ends and have jagged stubs that scrape the head. Hopefully changing the snare wire will fix that!
@ptitepoulettedu91 also you should check the hoop, maybe the hoop is the problem, maybe one side of the hoop is twisted and that doenst allow a nice tension arround the head ...
@ab4foot11 a drum dial isn't absolutely essential, you could probably get similar results by going for a medium high tuning instead of 91! The drum dial is icing on the cake if you're a perfectionist :P
@never3818 all right, I'll try it on friday, but if I don't get perfect results than you have to buy me a drum dial :P Oh yeah, also, does this tuning make your toms buzz at all?
@never3818 hey, how do you avoid snare buzz? I got my new snare drum to sound really nice (at least to me), but it makes my other drums buzz, do you know anything that could fix this problem? I've tried like readjusting snare wires to get them centered and tightening/loosening the reso head. Thanks
liked and made this one of my favorite vids just because you are the only guy I've seen here that explains thoroughly how to tune a snare drum in a way that's easy to understand, I've been drumming for about 7-8 years now and I know this will help a lot of drummers. By the way your drum covers are fucking amazing man

You are absolutely the best, Steven! I've waited for this video over a year haha.
But finally, your way of tuning has worked for me. :) Thanks a lot.

Do you tend to have the reso higher or lower than the batter?
