What is the problem with your footage? I expanded the viewer to full screen, and many objects within the screen (as you are panning) appear to shake/stutter. Almost like it is a shutter speed problem. What's the deal here? I have this exact same camera and experience these same problems as I am panning.
@DarkOrb071 Nothing to do with shutter speed. Just me and my weak hands trying to hold the camcorder still while panning and being zoomed in a lot. The image stabilizer is trying to help, but I guess in my situation, only made it a worse. Today, I can do this better - maybe I was having too much respect for the USD 7.000,- I paid for it and I was holding it too tight. When hand-holding it, you need to relax and not hold your breath, as I was doing :)
@RicoBergholdtHansen It is as if certain parts of the frame are shuttering. I noticed it when I saw an occasional car passing (it would shudder) and sometimes closer shots of windows on buildings. I have this same problem when I pan my camera, the subject appears to shudder. Nothing to do with how unsteady my hand is, im not talking about the horizon bobbing up and down. Note that you can notice it when you have the image as full screen, it looks all good when it plays on the normal viewing.
looks great as I would expect from an ex1r, Dang i wish i could afford one of those sob's right now however I must be paying down my mortgage before I get canned at my job. All of america does not hate NYC... come on with that!!!! we all have to learn each others differences, most very large cities have somewhat of a similar attitude. Its just part of the big city thing. don't take it personnel.
Bro Doug J, explains in his video that he uses 5600k preset white blanace for outside... but wat bout indoors? do u think 3200k is sufficient for in doors?...
thanx... i hope i'm not bothering u too much.. heheh...
@ifinefilmz Chapter 12 and 13. Set the white balance as part of a picture profile and make sure to always have the 'WHITE BAL' switch set to PRST (preset).
@RicoBergholdtHansen When using the camcorder in artificial light (indoors), move the 'WHITE BAL' switch to A or B and make a manual white balance by pointing the camcorder at a white area and pressing the white bal button on the front under the lens. Do a manual white balance every time the light changes.
@RicoBergholdtHansen Bro Doug J, explains in his video that he uses 5600k preset white blanace for outside... but wat bout indoors? do u think 3200k is sufficient for in doors?...
thanx... i hope i'm not bothering u too much.. heheh...
@ifinefilmz White balance is all about the color/temperature of light. The sun doesn't change its temperature, so 5600k outdoors is safe during the day. However, indoors (and outdoors at night time) you have different kinds of artificial light (mixed with daylight indoors during the day, if you have a window near by). Indoors you have fluorescent (green'ish light), incandescent (yellow'ish light), halogen (blue'ish light) and more. A white wall will not be white if artificial light is near by.
Indoors, you need to set the white balance manually every time that you encounter different types of light. Dough's DVD explains how to do this. Setting a fixed white balance at 3200k will not solve this issue. Do a Google search for white balance and have a look at the things that come up. There are many books out there but I don't think that is what you need.
Bro I went 2 vortex to get da dougs t video, dey said dey dnt hav it, is it possible if u may upload it or if u live any where in Toronto, Brampton, Mississauga or oakville, if I may barrow it? Thanx
@ifinefilmz You can buy it online from vortex media or B&H in New York. It's 2 dvds with 3 hours of very helpful info. It's not expensive considering the quality and info you get.
@ifinefilmz Sounds like you used a wrong white balance. You need to make a picture profile where you set the white balance to 6500k (daylight). I suggest buying the Vortex Media EX1 DVD. Doug Jensen explains the EX1 in detail and gives you his picture profile settings - I use these settings too.
@heavymetalalien I always render my videos as MainConcept (.mp4 H.264) at 30-35mbps. Since Youtube (like other video sites) compress the video again, you really want to upload the highest quality possible. Sometimes I have to use 20-25mbps or lower depending on the length of the video. Youtube allows files that are 2GB in size, while my main upload site Vimeo allows 'only' 1GB.
Have a look at these tutorials: vimeoDOTcom /forums /topic:3671
The jitter showed up when I had the EX1R fully zoomed-in and the image stabilizer was on. I have to stress that I normally never handhold a camcorder and that the EX1R is way heavier than my old Canon HG10. The jitter is not visible when I zoom out or if I just turn off the stabilizer.
This was my first week with a pro / heavy handheld EX1R. I'm now more comfortable with it - but I'll be doing 99% on tripod.
Don't let my weak hands blur your judgement of the camcorder :). I love this baby.
In PAL mode, there is a choice of 50i or 25p. In NTSC mode, there is a choice of 60i or 30p. You can even choose between aspect ratio SQ (squeeze) or EC (edge crop).
I was there from Sunday, January 17th to Sunday, January 24th. Most of the footage here is from Tuesday to Friday.
But it might just be because I prefer shooting when nobody's around :).
5th Avenue and Broadway are busy all day long. But I didn't post anything from there.
I wasn't allowed to take the EX1R up to the top of the Empire State Building because it was a 'professional camcorder' - I wanted to capture some footage from up there after dark (8.30pm).
That pissed me off, to be honest. I was also asked not to film at the Lincoln Center (upper west side) for that same reason.
A security person asked me what station I worked for. I told him that I was an amateur who had just spent my savings on a decent camcorder. He laughed at me and said: 'Year, right! With equipment like that?'.
After that, I kinda' lost interest in filming those 'more busy' places...
The Empire State Building's web site says: "We encourage everybody to bring their camera/camcorder to record their visit' (or so I remember reading it).
I just hate when something like that happens. I'm sure that they wouldn't ask a 5D mkII owner to leave the camera downstairs. They just looked at the size of the EX1R - I'm sure those guys know nothing about cameras anyway...
That "Truth4Power" comment pretty much sums up why the entire United States despises New York City. Really, the bad attitude, the shallowness, the desperate need to be indignant about something, etc. -- that comment is from a jack-ass worthy of the stereotypes associated with NYC.
Spend some time around America and you'll discover a completely different people and country.
I hope you got a PAL version -- you are in NTSC land, you know!
NYC is definitely not a true representation of the US just as this is not a true representation of NYC. I've been lucky enough to see most of the USA with all its variety in landscapes and people. Small Town America is by far my favorite.
The EX1R - and the whole EX line in general, I believe - does both NTSC and PAL, so this was 25p PAL.
You have a good point. However, this was just me being a tourist and trying out a new camcorder at the same time. I was not trying to make a 'true' portrait of New York.
The EX1R is not fully insured yet and I didn't feel like pulling it out while walking through busy areas like Chinatown and Harlem (my loss, I guess :).
The only statues in this 9 minute clip is the Statue of Liberty (a New York icon - at least for the tourists...), the Bethesda Fountain in Central Park (another icon used in many movies from Central Park) and the Hans Christian Andersen statue in Central Park (you might not know him by name but you will no doubt know his fairytales, if you ever watched Disney films - he was also born in my hometown of Odense, Denmark :)
Most architecture in New York is European (by style), so it's hard not to get that in there somehow. I did film some Colonial and Victorian buildings as well but they are not as abundant as the others. Many of the buildings in this clip has been used in Hollywood movies / in TV shows and that was my reason for the interest.
36 Gramercy Park East (with the knight) is an interesting example of Gothic architecture but I realise that people persons will get bored after a while when wathing this :)
I'll try to do more people stuff in the future but generally what you see is who I am - for better or worse...
is it me or all the horizontal lines are going crazy on this video ? crazy artifacting like i have never seen before.

No problem - I value your input... Adding people to my stuff, is something I need to work on.
RicoBergholdtHansen 2 years ago
No offense, but this is the worst representation of New York ever put to film.
New York is almost unrecognizable. It looks like you went out of your way to find old European-looking statues and monuments.
Uh, the video begins with a shot of a knight?
Here in New York we have 8 million fucking people of all colors, creeds, and backgrounds!! Thats NY. (Where are they?)
If you did not mingle with them and spent your entire trip looking at statues and parks...
Then you missed New York.

And you obviously missed the point of the video. It was a demo of a very fine new camera. It was not meant as a representation of anything, or anyone.
Thanks RIco for the great video showcasing the camera.
Dblitz70 1 year ago
Yeah, your right Dblitz, must have missed my apology.
(How many people apologize on YouTube?)
It just struck me as strange that a European would go to NYC and focus on Gothic architecture and old statues.
It would be like me going to Denmark and filming at McDonalds and Starbucks. lol
But I actually like all of Rico's work.
