These cars are incredibly slow but that doesn't even bother me. I just bought a 2003 Tribute with the same engine and that 5-speed manual and I love it. It gets better gas mileage than my 2011 Mazda 3 and it's got enough power to get around. I love the transmission too. It makes the car fun to drive. I bought it for a family car and it's gonna work great. Daddy can have a grocery getter and some fun too haha.
Wow I realized that your Escape is doing 4000 rpm at 80 in 5th gear. One of my buddies has a a 2005 Escape 5-speed with the 2.3 and its geared way taller, he'd be doing like 3000 at 80. Weird.
Mine is a 2002 Escape 2.0L I4 5MT. The little 2.0 is kinda small for the Escape, but once you get into 3rd or 4th gear, the car is rather peppy. My XLS, has the smaller 15" wheels, which give better handling & a sportier feel. One of my favorite things is to pass other cars that slow down for the curved two-lane exit ramps. :)
Good fuel economy too. 22-25 mixe - I get the low number during the summer when the A/C is on all the time. During long trips it gets 27-28 (A/C on).
my god at least you have the five speed insted of the 4 speed auto. i have the same power plant in my 2000 focus 107hp 5 speed stick while i think the 2.0 in youre escape has 130. but that seemed slow and i know you wernt flat out at all but eh. ill keep my focus if i had an suv id carry people and things so id get a more powerful i4 or v6. i do love escapes but the 2.0 i4 is useless in the escape but great in my focus.
@yellowcow13 i am glad its the 5 speed, its slow, but i like it, it has close to 230,000 miles and gets better mpg than my sister's 09, and the 4 cyclinder has plenty of get up and go to tow jet skis or snowmobiles, so the 'lack of power' has never held me back. It's no bmw, but who said it was supposed to be?
@bpross14 i guess if it never held you back in the suv department its fine then... my neighbor just got a 2011 v6 escape he got 23.4 on his first tank and hes still breaking it in hopefully it will pile on miles like youres did
@yellowcow13 i have the '01 XLS manual 2.0, 168k miles. I just got done hauling a car on a tow dolley 3 weeks ago all the way to florida from houston and another one back. it had the power with no problem even going over tall bridges. it's not about the engine size, it's how you handle the manual shifting under heavy load. if you know how to drive a stick, that escape can pull alot more than you can imagine and still save tons of gas doing it too. BTW, the 2.0 was 4100 lb pull tested.
@ivyspikes16 yea dude he was going uphill. think about that one lol. when i'm on a regular street my 2.0 takes only about 10 seconds to get to 60 from a green light too. i'm all for the 6cyl but i stay away from bigger engines thats are kinda pointless. i save tons of gas and i can still got excellent pickup and go plus it's not like i'm on a race track everyday on the way to work so what do some people need a 6 for? plus the 6 cyl has a few bad common problems cursed to those escapes.

@tremer88 to be quite honest, i don't know if it would be any better than the 2.0. My mom's escape has the 2.3, and it has yet to impress me. even tho its rated at a lower output, my good old 2.0 feels like it has more get up and go. I personally would stick with the 2.0, but any engine with mods would be better than stock, lol...and i don't think my mom would let me touch her escape to let me find out ;)
@bpross14 well my mom also has the 2.3 escape and i was driving it around the other day, the fastest i got it up to was 105 and it was on a two lane road so i didnt dare go any faster. It did take a long ass time to get there though haha, i live on an island so theres no highways to drive it on so i dont think ill be going any faster than 105 any time soon...
@kyle51895 yea alot of people keep assuming that 4 cylinders a built like the 4 cylinders 50 years ago. they don't realize the they now have waaaay more power that 8 cylinders had 50 years ago lol. also people keep rating the horsepower too much still. there's alot more than just horsepower going on these days that rate the performance of an engine. cavaliers for example have low hp but they got a hell of a get up and go with excellent acceleration, granted that they are lighter weighted too.
i'm not sure...both engines use the same engine mounts...but the manual trans. with the 4x4 transfercase is a little bit bigger than the automatic, from what i've heard....that would be nice if it worked tho...
i know its not that fast, but it is a very fun car to drive, gets relatively decent mpgs and is very capable in all sorts of driving conditions...it has yet to fail me (considering it has 215k miles on it now...)

@emptywurld I guess these 2.0L have some toughness and relibility. Stick makes everything better. Is you next car going to be a Escape I4 stick?

You guys realize this is a 4-cylinder right? That's not too bad for a 4-cylinder pulling an SUV, and it looked like he was going up a hill!

would the 3.0 bolt up to this transmission?

they should have put manuals behind the v6 because automatics in these escapes are complete trash
