im a big film person - bergman, hitchcock etc... i especially love animated films - obviously disney and all the big anime films, but also lots of really obscure ones. this is by far my favourite film of all time. everything about it is beautiful to a point of perfection. it was released at the indie cinema near me and i saw it (literally) every day it was on (7).
I'm not going to spoil anything for those who have not seen this film yet, but all I'm going to say is that at the end of this film, I was very depressed.
@imnoobish I have just watched it and it's wonderful. There are no subtitles, neither is it a silent film with just music. There's some talking, but it's very sparse. Sometimes in French, sometimes in English. Most of the story is told visually and much of the emotion comes from the music. As with other Chomet films it's a feast for the eyes and probably deserves multiple viewings just to take it all in.
@LoveForLoves oh, felt bad about your own comment? Or did you just let "that thought mull around your head" and realized how condescending you sounded yourself? Did you just realize you were simply projecting? Now go read some more psychology, little prick (that yer problem perhaps?;-),Wow! jokes and sarcasm have some grain of truth to them, you really break the news here LoveForLoves, you are my hero. Now, do you still think I´m responsible for other people´s stupidity? Sorry, pal, I´m not ;-)
@ratatoskaa Haha, they had no need for too much research, the studios were based in Edinburgh at the time, and I think Sylvain lived in Scotland for roughly 10 years
Get out, half way around the world? I do get out a bit actually, but not to lower/western Germany (Saxony?), which is where I'm guessing the speaker is from. I studied high German for a month in Berlin, but never heard low German spoken much. Outside Germany, and especially in America, we really only hear the high German accent (whether spoken or imitated.)
@crock703 don´t get so upset about nothing, please. On TV and radio you only get Hoch Deutsch, and the speaker on this video is quite known on German TV and radio, he works a lot on documentaries of all kinds. And sorry to tell you you are wrong, you seem to be very touchy, but the speaker has no French accent. I´ve also been half way around the world, if that´s so important, and lived 16 years in Germany myself;-) I know what I´m talking about. Cheers.
Strange. I think you misunderstood. I listened to a portion of it, heard the french names and confused it w/ accented german vocabulary that I'm unfamiliar with. You made a quip about getting out, and the irony is that one of the few countries I've been to, is Germany, so I should have known maybe. I gotta say, maybe its cultural miscommunication.. but you were oddly rude, both times. Either way, later.
@crock703 Sorry, but with all due respect, I was not rude and I think you are a bit "touchy". Sarcasm is not "being rude", but anyway, back to the speaker´s accent, I´ve said what I had to say and sorry if it sounded "rude" to you, but to be honest, after a one month stay in Berlin I honestly wonder if you are really able to tell one accent from another...
@crock703 I don´t think so. I gave the answer to your question and very clearly made a joke accompanied by a smiley. You turned the whole thing into a petty argument about how offended you were by the joke.
What I like about it is the dimensional quality and the fact that it doesn't have the cute dumpy feel of a Disney animation and yet it's still winsome and intriguing to the viewer.
but in real life he is a bit more lost and surprised. That ´s what scared me in the beginning: Did we provide him with a soul? Will Jacques Tati be recognised?
.I shot with setting like Tatis, with a head-high camera, about 1,90 to 2 m high, facing the feet. Its more based on the person of Jacques Tati than on Monsieur ? (Sorry for not writing the french names down ,I don´t know how they are spelled properly) .In the script the Illusionist is described as very elegant.Jaques Tati was indeed a very elegant man.We followed that concept and caricatured him quite a lot. When under pressure he is more like Monsieur ?
What scared me most was the prescence of Tati.Though its not a film by Monsieur L. and not a typical Tati movie either. It s about the story of two persons developing over a long time and it´s taking place at many different places and unlike Tati, it s not dealing with a snapshot of one place at one certain point in time.
I also wanted to step away from the typical look of a Tati movie as far as possible.
The movie my uncle shot before was incredibly modern and focused al lot on design. Now I wanted to do something down to earth with lots of naturescenes, something you don´t find very often in Tati movies, except for " Jour de fete" maybe. But what I wanted to point out in particular ,was the explaination for all the magic, expressed by the decor and the colours.I wanted to show the colours of Scotland.I don´t know if you are familiar with Scotland.

anyone know if this is worth watching and does it have subs or is it just a silent animation with only music?

Chomet's use of form and, in particular, subtle shades, is breathtaking! Seems every bit as good as "Bellevile Rendez-vous"

I think this film is better. It plays like a dream. You can just slide in, let it play and absorb it

Or maybe it was just hearing the German speaker using so many french words/names..

i think that would be the reason - aaaand i think he has a smooth voice :3

@MrOrlica
Like I said, probably cultural miscommunication on both sides.
On accents, this was precisely my point -- that my experience is minimal, so I was unable to distinguish. Hence, my asking.

This looks absolutely brilliant! And it feels very much like the spirit of Tati is alive and well through Chomet's love of the amazing artist.
