this is the first time i have seen her she is not what i expected a majestic voice sung with no effort such pure talent pretty as a picture as well boy am i surprised !!
I got to see her in 89 in Ann Arbor MI. The place was packed! 3hr drive for me one way. Yet when she did this song I still almost cried. Her voice singing it still gets the best of me.Kathy Mattea did good but Nancy has a better way of putting more feeling into it. I don't listen to it when I'm sad, makes me cry like a baby. Just the way it comes out - beautifully.
She was in Waukegan a few years ago. Sad to say the theater was about one-eighth full. But I always wanted to see her and damned, she did not disappoint.
I first came to know this wonderful song via Kathy Mattea's cover version (wtih Don Williams providing the harmony on the chorus. Of course my curiosity led to me want to hear Nanci sing it since it was her song to begin with...... and I found the CD with this version. It's that story about the Woolworth's store that is the cherry on top... that makes this version the definitive version. That "Going Up!" at the end was a nice touch.
One of my greatest memories was when I was little and my mom and I would go down town shopping. We always stopped at the Woolworth's lunch counter and I would order an egg salad sandwich and a chocolate milkshake. I would give anything for just one more time sitting next to her at that lunch counter.
Nanci Griffith has the lot. The most beautiful female voice that I have yet to hear, beautiful looks, brains and a social conscience. I only discovered her recently and look forward to seeing her live when she visits Britain next.
I spent a few hours (days, months....) in Woolworth's stores. The wooden floors, and 25 cent hot fudge sundaes. they were the best. I spent time looking at the jack knives and the cheap chrome bracelets that they engraved with your name on them. The records were always an attraction as the 45's were the new wave of music. Great song. "Love's on sale tonight at this 5&Dime".
im only 25 but i love this vid my dad used to listen to from a distance when i was a kid n i have loved this song since it was on the same cd lol wonder if i could find that cd now
I "discovered" Nanci one late night while driving up the coast of Maine in the late 80s. Her unique little voice came across the speakers and I've never been the same...
this song was my first introduction to nanci on the austin city limits show oh so many years ago, love at first sight, still makes me feel like a kid every time i hear her do this version. thx so much for posting it.
Her introduction to this song is the best ever . . . "popcorn and chewing gum rubbed around the bottom of a leather-soled shoe" . . . "fill up my suitcase with unnecessary plastic objects" . . . always makes me smile!
it's songs like this and "light beyond these woods' that make me believe in humanity, they are so beautiful and honest: i'm aware that it isn't to everyones taste but "by golly" they sure are to my taste.
I love this album so much. This song reminds me of my Gram and my Grandpa. Grandpa died when I was 4, but I had Gram in my life into my 48th year. I miss her everyday. She was a hard worker, waitress, and Grandpa was a truck driver and owned a gas station in Minneapolis right in the city center. I wish I could go back in time to see them then.
Thank you for posting this! I almost cried. What the hell has happened to our music/songwriters, can nobody write this kind of material any longer? It just does'nt get any better than this song!
I have always loved this song. Always thought of her when I saw a Woolworths! I think they are gone now. Nanci is the best. Got to see her with Hootie & the Blowfish on the USC Horseshoe in grad school : ) & in Atlanta 10 years ago.
this is one of my favourite songs ever, on a par with "light beyond these woods" i love her intro, the explanation of the "lift" doors, really connects with a good audience and then blows you away with a beautiful song. far too underrated as an artist IMO.
@andrewm153351 Are you kiddding? Try living up north for a few years and you will cherish accents like Nanci's. Up here I am exotic, lol. They love my accent because theirs is so plain and lackluster. Nanci has a wonderful accent. I came to Texas a few weeks ago and met one person with a Texas accent the entire time. I was incredibly bummed. Be proud of Texas accents: some places they are considered very charming.
This song from One Fair Summer Evening, was where I fell in love with Nanci's music. So many years ago, and I have never stopped loving her, and her music!!!
Thank you yellahorse. Heard this, or something similiar on satellite radio today, and looked for it here tonight. Have always loved the song, and love to hear it live with the Woolworth story here.
Man, I remember hearing this in a trashy bar in NY back in the early 90's and falling in love. A true classic...someone on American Idol needs to gove it the life it deserves.
This saved my life.....lush to find the conversation at the start.

However, I distinctly remember that same Woolworth smell Nanci was talking about. This song brought back many memories.

Nanci is kinda like James Taylor--Her voice and song-writing eclipses her stellar guitar-playing. She is a true expert accompianist.
