  • I remember watching this on the mike douglas show in 79. they say when she showed up for rehersel that day mike's staff asked about her arm she told them she fell while skiing. a month or 2 had passed and i discovered the truth i was crushed. but like the trooper she was she finished the show with poise and beauty. Miss Minnie I love you I miss you r.i.p my sista .

  • this goes out to my love for the last 3 years. Kiss and hugs xoxoxoxoxo

  • She is an inspiration to us all. She was battling a terminal disease, her arm was paralyzed, and she STILL took the time to promote her wonderful music during this time! I am awestruck by this woman!

  • Of Aritha is the queen of soul, then Minnie

must surely have been the princess of soul.

  • How very lovely:~

Minnie ~ the "Princess of Soul".

or possibly I wonder . . . the "Angel of Soul".

  • If anything should ever happen to me as painful and devasting as cancer, I hope to be as brave as Minnie Riperton. We love you and miss you!

  • Love, Love Love it!!!

  • @swaregirl, i agree with you, she was a true pioneer, there is knowone today who could hold a candle to her, her music will be played and appreciated for many years to come, the Greatest singer then and now RIP Minnie you are missed.

  • Yes, the cancer spread and affected her right arm. Minnie kept performing during a time that stars who had cancer who remove themselves from the public eye rather than discuss their affliction. And certainly, celebrity women were not discussing breast cancer. We take for granted how open people are now about their diseases. Minnie was a pioneer in many ways - musically and through her openess about her breast cancer.

  • Bravo Minnie Riperton!

  • Yes, she had a stroke on that side thats why she wasn't moving it, she was going through so much when she done this show, i just hate she left us 2 soon.

  • She did not have a damn stroke, why don't you ppl get the correct info before posting your comments? A cancerous tumor paralyzed her right arm, because sh was suffering from breast cancer & it spread throughout her body

  • Heavenly

  • love it

  • I first saw it on Soul Train and later purchased the song. Loved it. Thanks Mike and Don for showing this jewel of a angel.

  • she was such a lovely woman, i miss her voice, she was unbelievable, there has not been anothere voice like her's

  • yep thats right according to Unsung.

  • The arm holding the wire of the mic I think if I remember correctly was either almost paralyzed or it became very painful to lift her arm due to the cancer that she had. This show was not too long before she passed away in 1979. She was such a great talent. I was watching something about her life not too long ago.

  • wat was wrong with her arm?

  • I could see the actress Regina Hall playing her in a movie,

  • This is a work of art from my Grandfather Keni St Lewis this is one of many hits he wrote

  • she had so much style and grace's even as she was in so much pain from the cancer but she carryed on for her fans and family. i will alway's have so much respect for her .miss u lady. r.i.p. 10-14-09

  • I love Minnie this is a perfect song.

  • I love reading comments where older ppl reminisce about Minnie..it just shows how much joy she brought to ppl's lives..I just dont understand why she doesnt get the credit she deserves..I cry when minnie sings because her voice is so beautiful..

    R.I.P. Minnie Riperton ='(

  • Minnie can never be emulated Mariah is good, but she ain't no and will never be Minnie Riperton! This voice is a one of a kind Gem, a true musical legend...RIP Minnie

  • @MOCHA68 Mariah sux ass, she dont have no real talent, she got her recording contract because of her at the time mafia boyfriend, she's a skank, no class at all

  • @MotownMaster that was harsh......but we all have opinions...ya know just like ass holes.......however, i believe that Mariah Carey is talented......shes just a modern day Minnie..u gotta to remember....we are all individuals but so many people have similar talents

  • @shannele06 wow did you really just compare that skank with Minnie????? get hearing aids or something, ill say it aginn, FUCK MARRIAH CAREY, SHE HAS NO TALENT, IF YOU KICKED A DUDE IN THE BALLS HE COULD HIT THOSE NOTES, THERES NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT MARIAH CARREY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @MotownMaster A PERSON LIKE YOU CAN FUCK UP A WET DREAM WITH YOUR MISERABLE ASS MR.MOTOWNMESS MARIAH IS GREAT MINNIE IS BEST DAMN YOU'RE HATEFUL YOU GOT SERIOUS ISSUES IF YOU IN MY TOWN I WOULD 302 YOUR ASS, LEARN TO LOVE YOURSELF.

  • @shannele06 i AGREE ,VERY WELL SAID I DONT KNOW WHY THESE ASSWHOLES LIKE (MOTOWN MESS) HATE ON MARIAH SHE GREAT MINNIE IS BEST POINT BLANK

  • I love this woman's voice, and I remember when she perofrmed this on Soul Train. The sad thing is that she's in so much pain, and unable to move her right arm. Basically... she performed up until she couldn't perform anymore.

  • omg i luv this song & ms minnie :) despite her cancer, she kept on truckin w/such resilience. much props 2 a beautiful lady & beautiful voice. the unsung segment on her brought me 2 tears

  • had all minnie's album... memories

  • what a bass line!

  • I did not know she made this song. They played this song to death on the radio. Minnie is the TRUE DIVA. She ruled the radio during the 70's and early 80's.

  • I absoutely love dis video, u can really tell how much she really was enjoyin dis. Minnie was gettin down....go head Minnie...whoo!!!(smile)

    Oh I love Minnie...

  • beautiful song

  • I love her music.I was at school in the UK and my music teacher showed me a paper "Black Echos" and the story was in there that she had died of breast cancer. Can you believe it that I was also diagnosed withthe same several years later. She was part of my growing up in St.Lucia, and when I returned to UK. And every so often I come see her images, even though I now have CD instead of records from the 80s.God is good that he blesses his children with such gifts as she was with her voice.

  • I'm in tears right now watching this. I forgot all about her right arm.

  • So lovely...

  • I bought this album when I was 15 years old...she died a few months later. They don't have talent like this in the music industry today. what an Angel she must be up in heaven.

  • I remember how popular she was on the radio and everybody talking about how great she was going to be. I was only 7 years old and at my cousins house in Rockwell Gardens (projects) in Chicago,Il. My cousin was ironing and he radio was playing and the man Tom Joyner said Minnie Riperton just died. Everybody in the apartment was so sad and quiet. I was so sad, confused and didn't understand what cancer was.

  • @chitwn4u i remember also july 12, 1979 so vividly because it was literally one month to the day after my birthday that our "perfect angel" minnie was called home by our Saviour. dj richard pegue of the old WVON broke the news and i remember sitting on my back porch and crying like a baby. i bought her last album "minnie" with my allowance and now 31 years later i still own it. i don't play it as much but every note of it has been commited to memory. "never existed before" is my fave.

  • what date was this? anybody know?

  • I am literally in tears right now watching this! To think that this lady right arm is paralyzed from breast cancer, yet she's still standing strong, looking beautiful and singing so wonderfully, with so much joy! She was a true beckon of light until the very end! She's such an inspiration and ICON -- I send her my thanks and love for blessing this planet with the best example of wonderful music, exquisite beauty, love and graciousness!

  • OMG..You are right about her arm...I remember hearing the cancer had spread...so sad,it's true when they say the good die young.

  • @slimsxyblkwoman OMG, i could not have put it better! LOVE her and never even met her!!!

  • @slimsxyblkwoman BEAUTIFUL!!!!

  • @slimsxyblkwoman: I fought Leukemia with my wife. She did three boughts with kemo. all I could do was make great food. After 5 years Cancer won now I am a single father. Now I got another great woman in my life. She gotta know, ain't no BS. What helps is that she has a 4 year old daughter, and her daddy died of Cancer also. Go figure?

  • @hiiamrick: If my stupid ass ever, gets to say I DO again, this will will be my song. i Can and never will forget my first "ALWAYS by alantic star' Sometimes life truly sucks. Mayby it should be SECOND TIME AROUND.

  • @slimsxyblkwoman amazingly said WOW

  • @slimsxyblkwoman Yeah she was singing to her husband for all his love and support, and Memory lane was to him as well. I too cry when I watch her videos, but I am so filled with joy knowing what a spirited person she was and how she loved life. sometimes I wonder if faced with such an adversity would I be so loving...this is my girl, noone can EVER top her as a singer or lady of valor! Take care slimsxyblkwoman.

  • I remember the radio DJ said she died in her husband's arm. and sang loving you. she was beautiful.

  • I was 16 years old when Minnie Riperton died I loved her music and like Phyllis Hyman she too was a beautiful and incredible talent. As a 2 time Breast Cancer survivor myself I have had Lymphodema for the last 6 years which is a disfiguring and debilitating condition watching the video it seemed apparent she had Lymphodema my respect, love and admiration for her is even more.

Again thank you for bringing that information to light. GOD BLESS YOU MINNIE. RIP

  • such a "bouncy" song!...love it

  • Heads up! In June, TV-ONE is airing a one-hour documentary on the life of Minnie Riperton. Finally !!! Minnie gets some much deserved recognition. We have waited 30 years for this!!!

  • Thanks for the heads up, Minnie is a classic,

  • That is great news...I was just sitting here thinging "TV-One needs to do an Unsung About Minnie". You know to the untrained or at least a person not informed of her condition, her performace was great.

  • They did around June of this year.

  • Hey TV One did do a segment on UNSUNG about Minnie and it was actually the first to air during the last season....Hope you can find it !!!

  • What a pretty song; she had a nice voice, and it's a shame that so many of today's "musicians" can't match the sheer technical, or professional, excellence of their forebears.

  • im sure there are singers just as good as this but there are 80 year old big record execs trying to tell us what is popular and what sounds good. its the worst system and that is why people are starved right now for any talent. we are so far away from this but i imagine one day we will return to great talent like minnie. all hail to the queen of range (mariah is princess considering if there was no minnie there probably wouldnt be a mariah)

  • Thanks for posting this. This is my favorite song of Minnie's. It's somewhat bittersweet to me now because I know now what I didn't know then....that she was close to passing away right about this time. I really thought she'd overcome her cancer! : (

  • this was my favorite minnie ripperton song. i played it over and over and over. it was 10th grade year of high school when this was a hit. a truly amazing talent.

  • I couldn't tell her arm was paralyzed until you guys said so. So she died in seventy- nine? I thought it looked kinda early eightyish. RIP Minnie, I am a lover and fan.

  • Great video. I added it to my favorites.

Actually this song was on the last album she recorded entitled "Minnie."

Her song, "Lovin' You," was used in a Burger King commercial a couple years ago.

  • this video makes me so sad. to see her right arm paralized makes me actually wanna cry. i wonder if she knew she was going to die right here?

  • She was in the last stages of cancer in this video. Her right arm was paralyzed. Yet she stood strong, looked amazingly beautiful and did her thang. She died not long after this. Truly a great talent that is surely missed.

  • does anybody know how she passed she has the most beauty ful voice

  • breast cancer. She lost one breast before passing in 1979

  • they said her right arm was paralyzed in this video

  • It was. She died the same year. Its so Sad. She stood strong! Rest In Peace Minnie

  • I am only 20 yrs old but I have been a huge minnie fan since I was 10yrs old. I wish I could have met her and had to chance to experince her grace. She is and will always be my favorite singer and I listen to her music everyday love yah Minnie

  • Damn, she was a trooper to the end, Rest In Peace.

  • my brother in law a former career criminal who has HIV and is with NARCONON now says only the good die young. He always told me that when I worried about him dying. He always said don't worry about me only the good die young I will live forever.

  • "It's so sad to watch this b/c I believe that this was her last performance before she died. She's the illest... "

you're a comedian, right? she's the illest.... i think that was in bad taste.

  • I don't think this person meant ill, illest is an compliment. Like she was the greatest...ok

  • This is sad to watch, but she look so beautiful. I love her dancing. It's cute. RIP Mom and Minnie

  • I forgot about this jam. Thanks to whomever that posted this. *snapping my fingers*

  • she was really pretty, i love her music

  • It's so sad to watch this b/c I believe that this was her last performance before she died. She's the illest...

  • I feel so blessed to have grown up in the 70's/80's when true artist made real music.

  • This song is the great. I love the rhythm and it makes you sing along with the lyrics. Minnie really knows how to create a record

  • Sometimes life is just not fair. I know we are not supposed to question the work of the Lord, but you can't help but wonder why some people have to go and the best people.

  • What surprised me about the ST Tribute was that they didn't show any footage of her singing on ST...like when she sang REASONS... LIVE

  • I have a sad but sweet feeling listening to this song almost 29 yrs. after she left us. I know she has her wings.

  • The great Gene Dozier co-wrote and produced this track - how could it not be a favorite, two music masters working their magic. And it's still a hit ... over 30 years later. RIP Gene and Minnie, you'll forever live in my heart and soul ... and my music collection!

  • This LADY was absolutely Amazing!

  • Phyllis Hyman said her best female singer was Minnie Riperton. I'd have to agree with Phyllis on that Minnie Riperton was my personal favorite of all. Mariah Carey and Angela Charles get close, but Minnie's quality, style and ability to interpret a song is still unmatched. I remember her passing on July 12, 1979. LaDonna Tittle of WJCP (defunct) announced it and even though it was sunny outside I was gloomy in feeling. dropped many a tear for her. Marc and Maya, your mom was an angel on earth...

  • Love it.... love you and thank you Minnie R.I.P.

  • She is so beautiful to me.

  • I wish this one was Live. they stop doing live stuff in late 78 or early 79

  • This is Beautiful Music!

  • They did a tribute to Minnie Riperton on Soul Train, but didn't they first show the last footage from Minnie's last album before she passed. I watched it in 1979 and I thought that they showed her with Jose singing "Light My Fire" on the show.

  • For me THE ORGINAL SOUL DIVA soul power Minnie

  • Me too!!! lol

  • I third that emotion!!!! Now that is a Diva! This is my favorite song. I think this was after her breast removal. She wore outfits to disguise her breast not being there. She is an Angel singing in Heaven. Rest in peace Minnie. I rember watching this on Soul Train, in 1980, I think.

  • I think the air date for the Minnie Tribute was in 1979 still.

  • In this video Minnie was in the last month, maybe even weeks, of her life. She was bloated from the chemo, and she lost use of her right arm due to lymphodema, an excrutiating swelling that happens to cancer patients when lymph nodes are removed. It's an incredibly painful condition, but she pressed on doing what she loved: entertaining for the people. It says so much about the phenomenal woman that she was.

  • That explains why Cornelius was very sad when introducing the song and why Minnie was holding on to the cord like she was. Honestly I can't really watch the rest of it because I get sad. True fighter indeed!!

  • Yeah yopu could tell the way she's holding her arm which breast was removed. She was just a wonderful woman. And her daughter is so funny, Minnie would be so proud of Maya

  • Actually it was more than that, her arm was affected by the chemo and such that it became almost useless. She had to use the cord to pretend her arm wasn't just hanging there, take a good look at it. Its sad. Look how Don C. began to introduce her, he was very sad and probably knew more about how sick she was.

  • Can you send this to me please?

  • I'm glad that whatever she was going through didn't stop her from singing.I love this song.

  • It was said that she was a trooper the whole time she was sick. She didn't let it stop her she just kepted on doing what she could do until she couldn't anymore. She was a great tennis player too
