Perahia plays with passion and elegance. His sense of structure of the concerto is superb. His notes are very clean and graceful. This is indeed a historical recording, a gem and a great treasure for the piano audiophile. A magisterial performance indeed.
klinsha8, I don't understand what you mean with grimaces. He looks concentrated and focused on the music, but I think he doesn't do any disturbing stuff. In general, I don't mind what musicians do, as long as the quality of their playing is not suffering from it. You are mentioning Gould, who sat practically on the floor and sang along with everything he played. I don't like his playing, but what he does with his body; I couldn't care less. And in this case I think that the playing is stunning.
Horowitz probably lightened his action for him. Yes! his piano's action and pedals have been adjusted so he can purvey this concerto and peruse it's contents thusly.
Perahia is a genius, as we all know. But I love what happened to his playing when he befriended Horowitz - an unlikely match, perhaps, but perhaps not. Vlad advised him to think outside the box, and IMO his playing blossomed after that. Bravo!
Enjoyable indeed! It's always a pleasure to see Murray Perahia in performance. Effortless playing yet so powerful and moving. Perahia is my favorite pianist.
i agree. so effortless. but the sound he produces is one of a kind. amazing pianist. and he feels the music. you can see him enjoying the music and feeling with the music as he plays. he's an absolute gem
I remember this broadcast back in the late 1980's with Jane Glover, Neville Marriner and Murray Perahia discussing the music in between or or at the end of the concertos, it was very enjoyable but you can't purchase these concerts on DVD or VHS so glad to see them on here, Perahia is one of my favourite pianists.

Amazing piece. I love that pianist and his ability to feel the music is palpable even without the video.

Great pianism, very intense, elegant, expressive. Better here than in many Cd's of 20-30 years ago. Chapeau and five stars.
