P.S. My own "credentials:" I've spent a lot of time at Hawk Ridge in MN, spent an entire semester learning raptor ID in Raptor Ecology, lead raptor surveys at an area 20 min south of campus, and I work at a raptor rehabilitation center.
In the end, though, "credentials" mean nothing if not supported by evidence. There is always the possibility of being wrong. ;-)
@jroth848 Thank you for your reply. While I dislike predator birds...it is only due to the killing of the pretty songbirds...they can have all the mice, and other critters that crawl on that creek!
@InHISWord2 My grandmother actually has the same sentiment; while I'm marveling at the grace and beauty of a redtail, she curses it for "eating her birds." The good news for her (and you, I suppose) is that Buteos (like the redtail and the red-shouldered) mostly eat small mammals.
@InHISWord2 The accipiters (sharp-shinned, cooper's, and goshawk) are the ones that specialize in preying on other birds- an AMAZING feat when you think of it (birds are FAST prey items!)- and they're probably my favorite family of birds. But then I have a strong background in ecology and see natural processes that others consider grotesque/ tragic (such as the death of a songbird or deer) as beautiful. Different perspective, that's all.
There is obvious horizontal brownish- reddish barring on the chest, which means it could be 1 of four things in eastern North America: 1) Adult Broad-winged Hawk 2) Adult Red-shouldered Hawk 3) Adult Cooper's Hawk 4) Adult Sharp-shinned Hawk. It can't be 3 or 4 because Accipiters are very slim, never have dark eyes. And the posture's... wrong. It can't be 1 either because adult BWHAs have VERY obvious white stripes on the tail (1:31).
Maybe I should give details: See the reddish breast; the mottled back; the dark & light stripes on the tail and the shape. Also, it is by a creek. Red-shouldered Hawks eat snakes & frogs; among other things, and can be found in the suburbs. Trust me, it is no owl.
I agree with Elis1k, it looks like a Red-shouldered hawk, and its defenetly not an owl, judging from the light in the video, it's to early for any owl to get out, also most owls dont like to sit on branches like that, they prefer to get into the tree, or stand on the tip of the tallest branch.
By the way, sorry for not getting to this before, i've been pretty busy and not been on youtube much.
lol, and yes owls do get out int he daylight, but its rare only if they are startving, maybe if oen didn't get any food the last few nights, it's willing to try in the daytime, maybe you should take it to a bird watcher you know, or search the library.
I really don't know any birdwatchers! This is why I took it to the tube!!! LOL!
Hope you enjoyed the vid anyway...I am
super new at using vid cam shots for videos.
It was clear as a bell when I uploaded it, but something happened to the first minute when it uploaded and it is sooooo blurry...but clears up later...weird! God Bless you friend!
It's an owl. Only owls can sit as vertically (straightup & down) as this bird Is. Hawks & all other birds of prey are far more horizontal when they are at rest.
You might want to check out one of the specialty guides, "Hawks of North America" by Clark & Wheeler, or "How to Spot Hawks & Eagles" by the Suttons, or North American Raptors" by Wheeler & Clark, "Raptors of Eastern North America" by Clark, if you haven't had the opportunity to see many hawks perching - they have very good pictures.
Thank you for the information. Already have the book Hawks of North America, along with various others in my families library. We grew up in a group called Kunieh, which grew into Tecumsa Lodge. As a family we've studied Raptors etc,& other animals associated with the study of Indian ethnology. Our family has a wild life rescue which works alongside Red Wolf Sanctuary in Rising Sun Indiana.
Looks like the hawks and chicken-hawks we have around here in Mid-Michigan. I don't belong to the Audubon Society though, so your guess is as good as mine. :)
Yes it looks like a spotted owl,Nice Love when they just show up, had a red tail hawk in the back yard and a few pheasants male and female, love when that happends,
My co-worker and I are thinking it's a spotted owl. He sure is a biggie! I'll bet Noah had fun feeding his grandad, lol. As for the bracelet, he might be being tracked by conservation folk. Or, he may have gotten it caught on a ring from a beverage, but at least it's where it's not hurting him. Some animals this happens to aren't so fortunate. Or maybe......He's on house arrest??? Whatever he is he's beautiful! I'll bet we don't know half of God's creatures yet! God Bless!
If it is a spotted owl they are rare, & may be on the endangered list. It needs to be protected if it is. It would be good to call the conservation dept & perhaps send this video. :]
My guess is going to be an owl or a hawk. It's hard to tell without getting a front view of him.
I had an owl perch in a tree out back once and he was magnificent. I considered it a good blessing because you don't often see them and especially as close as he let me get to him.
Carol, Oh my gosh is that a Dollar General store right near you. My favorite store!!!Ours is 20 minutes away!Look colds there!!We sat out in the sun today. 65 degrees here!!!! we get owls that sit in our trees, but don't know what your bird is!!Love ya sis

@jroth848 I understand what you mean....that some things have to die as the natural order of things. Just not the pretty songbirds! LOL!

is a flesh eating bird of prey. Thanks and God Bless you!

You would normally not see an owl in daylight hours like this. I believe it to be a hawk of some sort.
