i have a 1970 model 311E in very good shape, less than 100 rounds through it,but only the left barrel is full choke, the right is modified, and since you were talking safety,,,you should keep the barrels pointed down and lift the stock up to the barrels, when loading,,Not sling the barrels up
Some double guns will discharge when closed up if the trigger is pulled prior to closing. Some old pump guns too. It`s a failure of the design. The only real safety is the one between your ears.
hey i have the 311A 12 gauge could you tell me if the barrel is seamed or not because I would like to shoot slugs and want to be sure it does not have a seamed barrel
i have a double barrel 410 with hammers and folds in half with a skeleton carved butt , the markings are elg with a crown on . and 12m c in a diamondalso the letters bg ,and 12sr10.4. can u tell me any thing about it. as im at a loss
Don, I cant tell ya a lot about the gun other than this, the gun in lower condition is worth around $600, that should give ya an idea as to what its worth in good condition. Also that with 3" #4 birdshot at 45-50 yards can drop a groundhog DEAD. I know this for a fact as I am a witness to 13 confirmed kills. This is one of two guns my grandfather is giving me when he passes on.....I wish and hope that day will never come thou. Anyways, great review. The other gun is a JC Higgins model 20 12gauge
@darthbilly97 Very light. You may be surprised if you have never shot a shotgun, but if you shoot a 20 gauge and then the 410, the 410 won't feel like anything.
@darthbilly97 No problem, and P.S, Even though the 410 is a good shotgun for low powered hunting, the 20 gauge shells are cheaper. That's why you rarely see anyone have a 410.
@darthbilly97 That's what my friend has. I just got a browning over-under 12 gauge and a remington 870 12 gauge, they're both great guns. I never fired the 500, so I can't really diss it, hope you enjoy it :p
@GIANTPOOPSACK Keep in mind that the firearms that are chambered for .410 shotshells and are sold with less than 18.5 inch barrels (such as the Super Commanche and Taurus Judge) are legal only because they are chambered for the .45 LC as well (thus they will have a rifled barrel); a stand alone .410 with a smoothbore barrel of less than the legal minimum of 18.5 inches means it would be categorized as a short barreled shotgun.
Interesting Video! Just one question-what shells are you firing? That's some seirous recoil for a .410! I have a spanish Eibar .410 side-by-side and it feels like firing an airgun, but mine only has 2 3/4" chambers so I can only easily get shells loaded upto 12.5grammes. It does demonstrate pretty well if you have a flinch tho!
My father gave me his side-by-side .410 when I turned 10 years old. I liked chicken a lot but after receiving this gun, partridge was always on my mind. Thanks for the flashback. Cheers.
just picked up a stevens savage arms model 311 series H 12ga side-by-side. serial number starts with "D". any clue on how you determine the date of manufacture
Very informative video on an uncommon shotgun. I inherited an almost identical one from my grandfather marked "Ranger" probably made by J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company for Sears. I have searched for hours on Google and it has yielded very little information other than it may have been made in the 1920's or early 30's. Anyways, thanks for sharing!
my best shot with a shotgun was on a flying pheasant 60 yards away between a small window in the trees with #4 or 5 through a 30" barrel full choke on a ithaca 37
exactly why ppl say never point a gun @ sumone even if its not loaded, a friend of mine learned the hard way, sum shrapnel idk how fell into the trigger and my friend showing off my m9 barreta to sumone pressed the trigger and boom, the little peices of w/e was in their hit his friend and he got bruises and cuts all over him, in the end my gun i bought two weeks before incident, got tooken away.
This is one of the best double barrels you can get, i keep one loaded beside my bed. I take it dove hunting all the time. I carry it with slugs as a backup gun when i am hog hunting. Just an all around great gun.
@sootch00 sorry about your great grand father. my great grand father lost his left hand and part of his fore arm; the same way, he was lucky to survive
I was offered to buy a 10 Ga SxS the other day. Since I just turned 18 I was considering it. Than I was told that my dad doesn't want guns in his house. SHIT! Looks like it time for layaway

This is really cool. My dad just gave me his 60's era Sears (made by Savage) bolt action 410 single shot. Going dove hunting for the first time in years, and hoping to do as well as last time :)
Sootch! Love what you're doing. I have a Stevens model 520 12G pump. I found an old Sears catalogue posting from the mid 1900's. Quite a bit of fun to research these things when it yeilds some fruit. Found out that gun was made from 1915-1930. My dad gave it to me, it belonged to his uncle. It's a nice conversation piece with my dad from time to time. I thought I'd share. I look up to you, D. -JB
@deke441 I don't believe these are a good starter gun at all. You are at a handicap when shooting a ,410 hunting. I used to think .410 was a good starter gun, We shoot alot of skeet and only the very best shoot .410. They are few and far between, 20ga much better choice for starter gun, keep up the good work!

Hey Sootch. This is a little off base from your video you are doing now, but I want to ask you a question. Have you ever tried a Siderlock an additional trigger lock for a Glock. I am used to a regular manual safety on my pistols and I think I would feel safer with one of these mounted in the gun. Thanks for any input.
wow, that is horrible about your great grandpa. Hunting accidents are rare. My great grandpa got hit with bird shot real bad in a pheasant field but he was ok. There is absolutely no reason for stuff like that to happen. All of my friends are very safe when we hunt, and if we take someone who is not they do not get invited again. That is a sweet gun though
@rwpock My Grandfather was only 2 yrs old when it happen. It was my Great Gandfather's best friend that shot him. When he closed the action, the gun fired and unfortunately was pointed at my great grandfather killing him in the field. That was around 95 years ago. Thanks~
cool gun sootch. i have a double bbl 410 made by Rossi (imported by Interarms). pretty sure its from the 70s. a little side note -- i hate guns with no serial # on them. i have a couple old .22's made by mossberg with no serial # or dates. also got a couple REALLY old single shot shotguns with no numbers
