I've googled BBC+Al-Durra. The most recent article I can find is from 5 years ago and concludes "we may never know what happened." But the important quibble is this: the cameraman was Palestinian, not French, so that part of the description is wrong.
As to the rest, it seems the most likely truth is that, bizarrely, some Israeli soldier decided to shoot two people cowering behind a barrel, although the film doesn't definitively show this.
