  • Brilliant!

  • martin on steel string or nylon. sounds more classical guitar. or is this dagad. with mixed nylon and steel string.

  • Oh my word that is MAGIC! Thank you!

  • I've met Carthy on several occasions. He is a lovely man. Greetings to everyone from Jarrahnut in wonderful Western Australia.

  • Martin Carthy is one of the nicest men I've ever met, a true gentleman.

  • @Clungehungry i agree met him years ago a great talent yet so humble

  • Sublime! Although I`m not sure that the same can be said of Mr Carthy`s shirt! Enjoy this? Buy anything that Mr Swarbrick and Mr Carthy have recorded and you won`t be disappointed. Individually they`re brilliant, together they are as I first commented. Stefan Grossman and Guitar Workshop are all class. Go buy some DVDs!

  • who's on bass? sounds like Danny Thompson

  • @timmots I think it's Martin's thumb

  • This is normally performed sarcastically or macho like. This is an interesting version. I really like it :)

I in fact learned this song while sitting in a room that looked out to Biker hill! :)

  • Martin Carthy's brilliance as a guitarist is obvious, but he has a fantastic voice too.

  • brilliant:):):):)and dont they look young:):)

  • This is SOOOO different from the version I know... or should I say the version I know is so much different than this one... lol

  • Good grief; that's a tongue twister, isn't it?

    5*****.

Thanks to MorrisManDanceMan for the share.

    Jennie.

  • @Kittielips Sure is. It's likely one of those songs that were meant for providing music for dancing when there weren't musicians around. In this case, I think the words follow the "shape" of the tune; some of those Northern hornpipes are really "jumpy". In any case, it's fun, and Carthy and Swarb sure make it look easy.

  • very good thanks

  • Isn't this 1968 or 1969, just before Mr Swarbrick joined Fairport? I notice Swarb looks like he's been up all night (no change there then).

  • @caley956 Maybe earlier than that. - Swarb was poached by Fairport, Martin was poached by Steeleye Span. Of late, he & Swarb have been playing together again, certainly live, with rumours of recording together again. Trouble is, these days, Martin has a daughter who is very slick on fiddle. Steeleye's best period(s) were when they had Martin.

  • Fantastic!!

  • Amazing.

  • Typical of Martin's great guitar style, but bloody hell, look at the condition it is in so early in his career! Apparently he got 39 solid years out of it & still owns it.

  • I discovered martin and dave when i was 14 or so. a friend of mine brought me to a gig in Whelans in Dublin Ireland, and i was blown away by what i heard. Martin was touring with his wife and daughter at the time, and the quality of the music was incredible. now i go to see them every time they play dublin. this is the finest english folk music you are ever going to hear.....

  • rolf harris on the fiddle?

  • and Screech from Saved By The Bell on guitar. Good duo lol

  • I grew up listening to this!

  • Many thanks. I love the comments, keeping the show on the road: 'And again!'... 'Now??'

  • the whole clip! great! they're amazing.

  • Cracking cheers :)
