We're not fighting a "war"! We INVADED & we OCCUPY an INNOCENT people using "shock & awe" - TERROR. Hitler used the identical excuses to INVADE his neighbors. The US INVASION was illegal. It was the Saudis, British & Israelis who helped Cheney in the 9-11 attacks...NOT Iraqis!
The US attacked Iraq because Saddam moved his oil economy to the Euro, threatening further collapse of the US dollar & hurting our ability to sell the US $9 trillion debt.
Iran is next, for the EXACT same reason.

Retired Generals Schwarzkopf, Zinni and Hoar have indicated that the "surge" is a short term tactic not a strategy, ALL WERE AGAINST IRAQ WAR:
A-What happens when the surge is over, Quada will return and begin guerilla tactics. The Iraqi people have to take responsibility for their well being. America cannot remain in Iraq forever.
B- Since 12/25/07 there have been 10 bombings in Iraq. Combination of Al Quada, Shia on Sunni, and Shia killing Shia.

I got a better idea. How about if another country doesn't agree with us (ie Iraq), we leave them alone if they leave us alone?
Actually, Ron Paul was the first Republican to point out we didn't have enough troops - b/c we would never have enough, the war would be without end. Victory has not been defined, there has been no declaration of war by Congress. McCain has recently said we may have troops in Iraq for 100 years!
