  • Quienes son esos tres q bajaron el pulgar? se abran equivocado!

  • Brian Blade's face is priceless. That stage is overflowing with talent

  • mother fucker.

  • perfect sound!!!

  • Chalmant song

  • love their nice and mellow rendition of "like sonny!"

  • MESMERIZING )))))))))))))))))))))))))))

    ,)

  • Pat please change your stripes tshirt sometimes...wonderful vid btw..

  • After hearing Pat's solo, I'm was a little scared.

  • I think Monk still had the best hats, but Kenny Garrett's in the running. He's got the advantage of being alive.

  • BRILLIANT !!!

  • @TheBreckerish - I am so sick of the fact that people call Kenny Garrett Kenny G. They are just completely two very very different people. I don't generally judge people but considering their ability to play the saxophone Kenny Garrett is like god and Kenny G (whose real name is Kenny Gorelick - FYI) is a demon - a very corny one too.

  • Oh man, I love Kenny G! but I prefer it when he plays those lighter tunes on his metal clarinet, I don't think he know's this tune very well, but it's okay because he's the greatest! Go Kenny G!

  • @TheBreckerish You'd best be trolling

  • omg that guitar sollo!!!!

  • Pat Metheney is a beast!!

  • Metheny over played the accompaniment. but I think he learned something playing with Garett.

  • @grantgre yea I agree... It felt like the band was really building by themselves without really letting kenny lead the way. During Kenny's solo I was really more listening to the interaction among the rhythm section and sounded kind of like Kenny was kind of just noodling over the top? I don't think its anyones fault really, you could see it as an uninspired solo or insensitive comping I guess. I love Kenny and Pat but to me Blade is the guy here! too good

  • pat's solo was insane...

  • damn i listened to kenny garrett solo for 4 minutes and he didn't play one phrase that made me go 'yeah...' wish there was a video of trane playing this!

  • this is PIZDEC

  • This is a tune where Metheney does not come out well, too much of playing the same riffs at high speed irrespective of what anyone is playing or the nature of the tune, which demanded a slower and more considered response. He is a great player, everyone has faults, and that is his. He should be more flexible. Makes many of his tunes sound the same.

  • I have been there ... and now I'm hearing this 14 years later. I'm totally blown away as I was, when I was there. They began playing at sunset... The atmosphere was incredible. A perfect concert night !

  • Pat is also a porn face instructor...

  • @Passion613 hahahaha maaan you've made my day hahaha

  • que venga esta dupla al Festival Providencia Jazz Chile 2011

  • wow

  • Great Coltrane song played by a great Alto Sax player. He's one of the best today...bar none.

  • Pat's licks always work.

  • 3:55 to 4:10 good stuff.. keep posting this please.

  • great musicians, thnx for sh!

  • I kind of agree... I would say he is a bit too present, and some of his licks come a bit too often... But then his solo is so great.....

  • well he has command over whether he uses these licks... I mean listen to any of his album charlie haden and you really won't hear much of this stuff

  • i like this but i think that the rhythm section is reacting great with eachother but does anyone else think metheny might be laying it down a little thick during some parts of kennys solo?

  • Yes

  • @bradley1107 I guess hes just feeding off Kennys exciting playing which in turn maybe excites and inspires Kenny in a reciprocal process?

  • Brian Blade for sure!

  • Is that Brian on drums?

  • yes

  • mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm u gizzzz r great

  • Pat & Kenny together are pure dynamite...

  • kenny!!!!!

  • increible son puros grandes masters

  • Beautiful.

  • Comment removed

  • Hahaha! Pat was the original pick for Braveheart, and he turned it down so they settled with Gibson.

  • LOL. He tried his wife's Henna for a change. How do you like the result?

  • @BrannonMcConkey - Mate, that was funny as hell. No offense to Pat, but he should have a haircut sometime. Notwithstanding his awesome musical skills.

  • Pat is amazing!

  • Nat Reeves is on the bass. This was from the album Pursuance The Music of John Coltrane. Great album Pat Metheny is just dumb nice on the guitar. Kenny Garrett is polished.

  • Brian Blade on drums. Who's the bass player?

  • maybe its Rodney Whitaker, cause hes the one playing on kennys album : Persuance.

dont quote me on that thought

  • tks, man

  • Its Nat Reeves

  • DAMN!!!!!!

  • Is Metheny using a piezzo in addition of the humbucker? Because there's a wire going from the bridge to inside the guitar through the bottom F hole...

And there's something taped and the body near the jack output.

Any one can help me? Thanks.

  • and Saxyman...

Creativity is as infinite as Creation...

So I theel (think and feel) we'll never run out...

    :-)

  • It just occured to me that Blade always feel like applauding, when listening and enjoying guys like garret, metheny meldhau, redman or mc bride...

he can't, cause he's got to hold the sticks...

So he just gives the best response they can ever, ever get...

and they play even better... and the response gets even more powerful...

and I just sit here and cry tears of joy...

  • No one will ever play it like Trane... Never again... No one will ever change the music like Trane... But if someone does... I will be forever grateful.

  • I think people kind of get defensive in Coltrane's honor a little bit. He's an incredible influence to everything and everyone, but look at all the people before him and what people said about like, Charlie Parker. When "Now's the time" came out, the critics were outraged. They said it was more out than anything they had heard before. And then Miles came along, and then Coltrane, and i think people now are still changing music. Chris potter is doing for rhythm what trane did harmony.

  • I'm not at all disagreeing with you. I'm just raising a point that you can't predict the future. Maybe there is another bach out there somewhere. Also, as time goes on, there are less and less things that can be changed into something good. We're going to run out eventually. I just hope that time is after I'm gone.

  • If Pat Matheny is reeaaallllyyy enjoying Kenny's solo, then there also may be something there.... I am a big fan of both, but this comment just seems thoughtless itself somehow

  • i think he just wears the hat because he's bald

  • this is just great! insane solo by metheny !!

  • Pat Metheny nailed his solo! Holy smokes that man can play! ( ^ _ ^ )

  • Is that Brian Blade on the skins?

  • DAMN! this is one great jam session!

  • why? would it make any difference if he was, will he sound better or worse ?

  • FUCK EVERYONE TAKE COVER

    this is insane

pat takes his usual '3 7 3 1' lick and throws phase dance in and then his usual 20000bpm runs and the 'like sonny' head in there - jesus its soooooooo fucking good!!!

  • Kennys facial expression towards metheny's solo 7:52 is priceless

  • hahaha ya!

  • ! Oh, PAT ! Will Not Mess with YOU!

  • È show.Sax alto de ptimeira.

  • To match up musicians like this... in a BAND like this... and a SONG like this... You've just created yourself a musical orgasm, my friend. This is pure epic musicianship at some of its best EVER. Thank you, for uploading this great vid.

  • where the hell does everybody get these videos, because that would look nice in plasma...

  • this combined with acknowledging the overtone series and poof you got jazz rock blues pick your poison

  • he'd stop playing...play nothing...then whiz a 16th note line at say 200 bpm. or faster. slow then fast.

  • thats what made charlie parker great. he'd complement his lines. an arpeggio then a scale. an interval then an arpeggio. and his lines made melodic sense since his chosen important points his melodies met...often in the same register as he would go from one to another then back. so it all made harmonic sense in time, from a point A to a point B.

  • and you displace with contrast. harmonic devices, melody, counterpoint.

  • so that each bar or any numerical amount of music is displaced and is accounted for.

  • yeah! thats how rock works, and blues favors the 1 and the 4. i think??? maybe??

  • what if you treated the last 2 bars of 8 measures of 4/4 or even the last 2 bars of 4 measures of 4/4 like the first 2 bars of whatever time you're in. so that you always have forward motion, each beat is displaced somewhat in this case. the 1's line up and the +'s line up but they equally alternate. i dont know if that makes sense, but it seems true. that's in 4/4 time. but in 3/4 time you take the 3rd measure off in a 3 measure group, you treat it as a 1. in any meter this can be done??

  • the 1st beat of the 5th measure in 8 bars is important. as is the 1st beat of the 2nd bar. alot of the rest he plays over the barline. it seems to alternate this pattern.

  • for every 2 bars of 4/4: the first bar you stress the and of 3 and the next you stress on the 3rd beat to keep forward motion. you stress beat 1 of the 7th bar in 8 bars as well to keep forward motion. also important for every 2 bars of 4/4 is stressing the 1 and the and of three on the first bar, and the 2 and the and of 3 on the next.

  • wait forget about the stressing of 3rd beat that seems wrong. the latter seems accurate though.

  • you got 2 bars of 4/4 time. you stress the off beats of 3 and 4, (that is 3 AND 4 AND) and then 1 AND 2 AND (only stressing the ands again) and the next 2 bars you take off. another way to put it is beat 1 is stressed of a 4/4 and then the 4 is stressed even more than the 1. then the next 1 is stressed a little less than the first 1 and the 3 is stressed a little less than the 1st 4.

  • the triadic rolling thing! i get it! very effective. tasty.

  • Garrett is the man but so is Metheny. Both have chops, but even guys with blazin chops can play with musical taste. Garrets solo slow builds into it. Metheny doesn't build his solo which isn't a bad thing, he just left off where Kenny stopped. That's the beauty of jazz.

  • Two of the best contemporary musicians, god damn they are good. I just loooove Garrets coltrane record=)

  • To glakeketkikol

    It's just chromatics...

  • There's nothing wrong with Metheny solo. Just as great as always.

  • Happy ears here!

  • Amazing, as it use to be...

But, personnaly, i don't think Pat is really happening on that solo.

To my taste, (it's not a judgement) he does an execiv use of his "triadic rolling thing" (tagadaga, tagadaga, tagadaga...!!!).

By the way, i've never figured out what he does exactly...If someone can explain me this pattern i offer the coffee.

  • He listens. I guess it is called "talkin" in the band! Does not upstage any body!!

  • This is GOD speaking through these men!!!

  • Pat Metheny is a "legend." He's no Johnny come lately. Dude has been playing guitar as a youngster and he's like what? Maybe 40 plus or 50's if that? Guy is a prodigy! Reading such comments about who's better is totally ridiculous! This isn't a contest. This is jazz! People who listen to jazz and like jazz have a "respect" and understanding for music. At least I hope we all do.

  • The start of this tune is so delicious!

    ( ^ _ ^ ) Just yummy for us jazz types!

  • if you just tried listening to jazz you might understand what Pat Metheny is doing.

  • man how could u even bash that metheny solo, it had such feel and classic metheny touch. As a jazz guitar player and musician, I would agree K G and Pat have contrasting styles, Pat Metheny being more contemporary doesn't mean anyones better in this line up. Think before you compare. And before you shoot off you mouth, the comping on this is so out of the box. Its sweet. And yes Hitler was a Jew.

  • The brilliance of Metheny is that he plays so smoothly that you don't realize he is outside. He is one of the most melodic outside players around.

If that's smooth jazz, give me more!

  • you guys don't know anything about Pat Metheny or haven't lsitened to him at all then. That solo was brilliant, and it wasn't necessary to go outside that much either. Metheny was teaching classes at Berklee at 18, I'm pretty sure he knows A LOT about harmony and going outside. Just a reference, watch All the Things You are with him and Brad Mehldau in duet. It is orgasmic. Btw, kenny garrett is the best alto player in the world at the moment in my opinion. Fantastic solo.

  • I'm pretty sure Pat would murder you if you said that to him. That's like calling Hitler a Jew.

  • He could get pissed all he wants, doesn't mean it isn't true..Metheney's jazz style is common...Garrett's isnt..

  • It sounds like you haven't listened to much in the way of Pat Metheny...

  • haha metheny has one of the most distinct recognizable and innovative sounds in jazz. You just showed your ass with that comment.

  • i thought hitler was a jew

  • you should give him some jazz guitar lesson man so he can learn from you! wahahahhahahahaa LOL!

  • Just look at the expression on the drummers face. Those guys are all totally getting off together. Metheny is no lightweight, he is a world-class virtuoso.

  • ...What planet is Metheny from? MAN IS HE HEAVY! Great playing! I love Garretts solo so I think that will be the next thing I lift. Thanks for posting this amazing video!

  • In which album Coltrane plays this song?

  • you could find this song played by coltrane in "Coltrane Jazz"

  • In which album Coltrane plays this song?

  • Metheny is ridiculous on the entire Pursuance album. The solo on Lonnie's Lament is ridiculous. The real Kenny G is seen on this video not that other dude from Washington but the brother from Detroit, MI. Jazz at it's best!

  • foreal

  • blade?!?! Sick

  • It's too bad Rodney Whitaker(bass player from the album) didn't tour with them.

  • i transcribed the Metheny solo from the CD version of this (Pursuance), and it is completely different from the one on this video. that is true art.

  • Pat is locking it down nice inconjunction with the other instruments. Nice collaboration. Very nice indeed :)

  • Two of the most respected straight ahead jazz artist out here! Pat and Kenny are awesome!

  • Metheny has this amazing way of soloing. He's never in hurry. His solos seem composed, in a way, in that they proceed through a grand arc, yet they are spontaneous creations. His comping also seems to propel the soloist. He takes some guff for some of his projects, but he is always a brilliant player. Thanks.

  • So true!

  • well said

  • Wonderful!

  • Metheny's rhythm playing is off the scale on this piece. Just amazing improvisational use of substitutions and harmonic sophistication.

  • this video is hot fire!!!!!kenny is one of the baddest cats ever

  • Un Metheny sorprendente.

  • Great cooperation

  • There was a video of this group doing Sing a Song of Song that was amazing, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Any chance someone could upload it?

  • Never mind, I just found it. :x

  • Impresionante!!!

  • The name of this tune should be "Like Sonny". It's a piece by John Coltrane.

  • desole joostisdabomb je rectifie

  • Really AMAZING!!!

    NO WORDS!!

Kenny and Pat Are the bests together
