Apparently Mr. Lehmann didn't have all that much bad luck, as he developed inside him and incredible musicality. Your tinkerings with the sound of this video have made it one of the most satisfying of all classical YouTube videos... and I've listened to thousands of them. Great post! If this is 'pre-stereo in the digital age... then give me more of it... as it has a keen balance between warmth, depth, and clarity.
Sottish writer Walter Scott described it as "one of the most extraordinary places I ever beheld, baffling all description” and induced Felix Mendelssohn to make a storm-tossed visit there in 1829. The sight and sound of the sea swell tumbling into the Cave made a profound impression on the young 20 year old composer. The theme which he later developed into his ever-popular Hebrides Overture apparently occurred to him on this trip, immortalizing the mystical aura of this curious freak of nature.
What a superb rendition of this ,Mendelssohn,s most respectful nod towards his brief stay in Scotland. I can only be thankful that he didn.t land in Glasgow, otherwise we wouldnt have had such a wonderful piece of music to listen to.......Can you imagine what his Glasgow Symphony would have sounded like? As a Scotsman,I shudder to think..Thank goodness he saw the best of Scotlands beauty and wrote accordingly. Shit Hot

@Psyche777able The Hebrides is a collective name for a group of islands off the shores of Scotland. The "cave" mentioned is named "Fingel's Cave" (in the Hebrides).
Fritz Lehmann and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. It's a clean recording so it follows that it was done on 33RPM in the first place, probably in the early 1950s.
You've made my day - I've been scouring Youtube for a version of this piece that is actually played correctly, at the right tempo, with the right balance of strings and winds, and most importantly, with true passion! I came up short - it's like trying to find a well played version of Beethoven's 9th or Copland's rodeo: impossible.
oh, hold on and think about for a while. it's on US classic-lovers to show people, what a great stuff this kind of music is. do you remember the teen-girls crying over their mobile phones while they listened to paul potts singing "nessun dorma"? classical music works without declaration, but it's on US to pic people up where they are - even if it's amy whinehouse (listen to the bonus-cd of "back to black" - it's also great music).
Ah, the great Fritz Lehmann conducting the great Berlin Philharmonic in this great piece by the great Felix Mendelssohn! Many thanks for restoring it to YouTube!
That said, I have the song "Rehab" bu Amy Winehouse in my car stereo at the moment...:) But... I'm a rich man, because I love classical music and (some!) popmusic at the same time. Thanks for your comment! I have a second channel, btw. I actually got a job (one dat a week) working with old records:)!
The channel is called "EuropeanArchive" and you can find it on the subscriptions in my channel home. There is also an EA website where (non-Americans only, sorry) coan download classical lp's (free!)
Oops, I answered that with the wrong channel id...
Anyway, easy to find the new channel now... :)
To continue about the European Archive, due to copyright restrictions, people with an ip address from the USA are not allowed to download the LP's. Sorry, but that was the only way the European Archive could "officially" work with big audio archives in Europe. On the plus side, there will be many classical lp's (also ones that never were issued on cd like Beethoven by Max Rostal!) you can download
But Mendelssohn composed this piece as a 21 year old (and made some earlier versions before that...) This piece is a musical poem that sets the mood and even takes you to the scene of Fingal's Cave. The music can almost mentally do through its structure. There is so much more depth.
There is little or no relationship between this music and that of pop artists. Its entirely in another realm.
Lehmann was such a great conductor! I've got a few LPs (Handel's Water Music, 2 Cantatas and the 1955/56 complete recording of Bach's Christmas Oratorio he could not finish, because he died) I really love!
Oh wow!! What an idea to have views of the sleeve and disc while playing the music. Really enjoyable for us audiophiles of a certain age with lots of nostalgia for the good old vinyl days. After acquiring thousands of CDs I started now buying cheap old LPs which for me are worth a lot more. The de-clicking techniques of moderns software makes listening to them a joy regardless of their condition.
*Note from Otterhouse* For all viewers; In the Netherlands, the "Alternative" classical and Jazz radio/internet channel Concertzender is threatened. I did an internship there (balancing engineer), and love their inventive programming- and use of internet. Now the Dutch public radio wants to pull the plug from the CZ because... the channel is too popular!! Please read the full story at my channel home "otterhouse", and send an e-mail to mening(at]concertzender(dot]nl for support. Thanks! Rolf
...about the stereo age....I noted....years and years ago...how so many stereo recordings were so slight in stereo effect, that a mono would equal them.....stereo, as a superior idiom, really was spotty in its "perfection"
it's actually 440Hz since 1939... I won't pretend I have the ear to tell if this recording is indeed sharp, but if it is, I would say it's probably a technical issue.
c'est trés beau et trés sensuel, l'interprétation de lehmann est unique, je vous remercie pour votre générosité et votre sensualité. Merci du fond du coeur

his grandfather taught him well. He was a gifted young composer of great music.
Always loved this piece of music. Is the Hebrides Caves located in Scotland?

Just learned that several Lehmann items have been taken out of the DG catalogue again... :( I wish Universal had some "feeling" for their heritage!

Encore Merci.

no my friend.... historically classic music had beem always for the few!!!
the many were listening to folk and traditional, and today the folk is listening to something quite the same in a more fancy and trendy way...
classic music had always been a good for the few of aristocracy, either in welth or in interlectual way
