got this model yesterday,it s brand new, minimal use but having the same problem sometimes with that relay, where is that relay?i saw one relay in the back of the machine,it s that the one who needs to be cleaned off?or the switch behind the heads?
sweet i have the same exact one, my dad bought it brand new when it first came out used it till the late 80s, our still works. as long as i can remember we have the second channel problem but usually we can see it when the rollers come out next to the right reel jump thats when our second channel kicks in. prob the elements had something to do with it
Nice machine! I remember when these came out, they were high end consumer products! Three motors is great. I bet it is heavy. I have a TEAC 40210SL that has three motors, sounds good, and weighs 50 pounds! Good luck restoring your AKAI, nice machine, pretty to look at, love the big old pinch roller!
That just gave me an idea- I need to do a high quality recording of this deck now that Youtube supports HD. I'll show the recording quality with a direct connection to the computer like I did with my latest vinyl video.
I just LOVE this recorder! I never get tired of your video!GREAT job on restoring it,sounds even better!I also love the music that is on that Ampex(is it?) or Scotch..?;)
Sweet. I have the same one in absolute mint condition with the original box. It sounds really nice. What do you think it's worth? I rarely have a use for it, and was thinking of selling.

Mine is currently apart, awaiting to be restored. It plays perfect, but does not record. What it does, even while just playing, if there is a signal on the line input, it will leak through and actually erase the tape. But when you actually go to record, it doesn't do anything. I plan on getting a service manual for it soon.
Actually, I still have to try the record on mine. While I have the back off to check capacitors, I'll see if I can help with your problem as well. I'm probably going to recap mine as well.
I absolutely love being able to play either side of the tape, and being able to monitor the tape itself while recording. My Sony TC-200 was so much more primitive.
I can't wait to hear this thing after restoration :-)

@Edward8585 It was that slide switch behind the heads that was dirty. It's tricky to get the De-Oxit into it, but it's worked fine since.

If it has the blue meters, it is a bit more valuable. I'm not sure what you would get for it on Ebay these days though.

Nice reel to reel! That's quite the console board you have there.

Nice deck!! Good sound, bold big bass! Neat to see the inside!

I might also add that there are no relays for the audio signal... The problem was the head switch being out of adjustment.
Another example of what happens when I make videos while tired :-P

Restoration is coming along well. I'm still waiting for the special low-leakage electrolytics for the amp boards.
The blue VU meters are beautiful after a good cleaning. I can't wait to get this back together!
