What a gorgeous and emotional theme. From the first note, I could identify Goldsmith's music. He was and is, one of my favorite film composers. #1 goes to Bernard Herrmann, who Jerry use to study with.
Could a JG fan with greater techno knowledge than me post his composition of the theme for Hour of the Gun. It richly deserves its place amongst the best western movie soundtracks.
The main theme from First Contact is for me not only the best piece Jerry Goldsmith wrote for a movie but for me the best piece of movie music ever. It is a hauntingly beautiful theme that never fails to give me goosebumps.
Don't forget Tora,Tora,Tora. The man was always the maestro, from Star Trek in 67 when I was 4 till now, I've always heard this guy's themes with television programs and movies. He always maintained a level of excellence that others had to stretch far to reach, and did it effortlessly. He'll never be forgetten.
'In like flint' was the first movie score that really made an impact on me at the age of 9, 38 years later it's still my favorite and most listened to soundtrack.
I have some Goldsmith LPS going cheap on ebay uk like ALIEN, THE FINAL CONFLICT, TWILIGHT ZONE THE MOVIE etc ebay user name top.vision. Love this theme btw.
I almost shouted "long live Jerry Goldsmith" at the Wildwood theater showing First Contact after the opening credits. I listened to the Explorers soundtrack the most but his Star Trek scores are more often in my car's CD tray nowadays.
brilliant tribute, I only just found out that he died, made me really sad, was thinking of making my own tribute to jerry, and I might do that at the later stage, 10 min tribute to this great composer.
I hope Jerry Goldsmith will be remembered when his birthday comes up on the 10th of February. I am so fond of him. I hope to shame the shabby critics of the Rotten Tomatoes.
Why doesn't Jerry Goldsmith have a star on Hollywood's Walk Of Fame? (but then again, neither do the other two film composing J's [John Williams and John Barry], don't have one!)
Not to rain on anyone's parade but this video skipped Goldsmith's most prolific and memorable years during the late Sixties and Early Seventies. Goldsmith is remembered not by his Star Trk: The Movie theme but for Planet Of The Apes ('68), Patton('70), Chinatown('74), Papillon('73), The Wind and The Lion('73), QB VII ('74), etc. The Star Trek and Alien soundtracks are marginal compared to work done in this period.
You are right, Goldsmith did many memorable thing in his lifetime, I just selected to set a little focus on Star Trek be course this was the way I learned to know him and love his music talent.
@CineExpress From what I hear, Goldsmith stated he could "dump" his emotions in Star Trek. Star Trek is where it all came together for him and his music.
You know , I liked Marco Beltrami's score for the remake of the Omen , but he cannot beat Jerry Goldsmith! His music for that movie scares the shit of me!
I got to see Jerry in the flesh in the late 90s at the Albert Hall, London. Short interview beforehand then he conducted some of his stuff. He seemed a tad cynical about film directors and his relationships with some of them! but that's to be expected. R.I.P. Jerry. Your music stays.
wow brilliant video i congradulate you made me feel so sad that he is no longer among us, and by far this and air force one is my favourite score of his
When I heard of his death, this exact piece of music came to mind. I had "rediscovered" it about a year ago, and I played it as a salute to a great composer. These are my favorite soundtracks of his: Man From UNCLE, Patton, ST:TMP (greatest theme ever?), The Omen, Great Train Robbery, Boys From Brazil, Cassandra Crossing, The Mummy, Alien, Hook. What is most amazing about his career is how different his music sounds from movie to movie. Thanks, Jerry! This piece is a perfect sendoff.
The other day I was watching Michael Crichton's Runaway and Jerry Goldsmith did the score on Yamaha Digital Instruments and it was so great. God bless his soul.
This theme is so beautiful than I though it would be great to use for funerals. It's a shame than in France, there was any evocation - even very short - on TV about Jerry at time of his death.( it's strange, one day I was totally mysteriously obsessed by every Total Recall's themes and I lernt after Jerry died this same day..)
Could write all night about Goldsmith. More innovative than John Williams, i.e. 1st Apes movie and V'ger Star Trek. Was Capicorn One soundtrack ever released? Great love theme!
Ditto. He had such great range. His compositions for The Russia House and Rudy are examples of how innovative he truly was. He was and still is the best.
Yes, both as the original soundtrack on a now out of print Intrada C.D., and more recently, Collectors' Choice Music just reissued the rerecording that was originally released on L.P. on Warner Bros. (and reissued and coupled with "Outland" on G.N.P. Crescendo).
great post. I can't imagine Star Trek without Jerry's genius at how dramatic and exciting the music makes Star Trek. Jerry Goldsmith was and is Star Trek. God bless him.
Nice tribute to a great film composer. Actually, his scores from the 70's are among my favorites: Patton, Chinatown, The Hindenburg, and TV show themes like The Waltons and Room 222. I think his score for Star Trek The Motion Picture (1979), not well appreciated at the time, remains his greatest work. Extraordinary and inventive.
I was 13 years old when i discovered Jerry Goldsmith with the film "the omen". It was so impressive as music... Since I bought all the moving score I can find. for me, the best are : "under fire", the trilogy "the omen", "legend", "papillon", "basic instinct" and the wonderful music of the generique of the tv serie "star trek voyager"
Some of my all time favorites are In Like Flint, Breakheart Pass, Barnaby Jones, Room 222, Planet of the Apes, etc....... He wrote such beautiful music. Thank you for the tribute!!

10 favourite Goldsmith music moments continued:
'Katya's Theme' as used in the opening credits of the Russia House.
Any cue in Under Fire.
Both the main theme and the German March from Patton.
Main Theme from Chinatown

Anyone interested in listing their very favourite Goldsmith musical moments. My ten would be (in no particular order):
Supergirl flying to Argo City before the end credits.
Anything from Star Trek The Motion Picture, but possibly Kirk's introduction in San Francisco.
The funeral pyre music in First Night.
The end credits of 'The First Great Train Robbery'.
The jettisoning of Kane's body from the Nostromo in Alien.
'The Search' from Planet of the Apes.
