  • so the point of partitioning is?.....

  • WARNING! DO NOT USE THIS EXCEPT YOU CAN CHOOSE YOUR PHONE MODEL AT THE CLOCKWORK INSTALATION! IF YOU DON'T AND YOU STILL TRY TO REBOOT INTO RECOVERY, YOUR PHONE WILL DIE !!

  • On my Desire I have 4 gb sd card and I partitioned it all 4 gb on 64 mb swap size it took 2 seconds I hope it works

  • So.. Nice video, informing and explaining it very good.. I saw it just now after setting the swap size to 256 mb, and my phone is dead..:/ I've tried CPR and mouth to mout, but failed.. Any suggestions?

  • FUCK OFF ASSHOLEEEEEEEEEEEE

  • Thanx. Working like a charm! :)

  • thank you for destroying my phone I had to changed the phone's motherboard thank you for that.

  • good stuff. U were a big help!

  • does the bootloader have to be unlocked, if you want to boot in recovery mode??

  • when you partition your SD card can you still use apps like titanium backup to backup your apps+data. Also can you update apps on the SD card, for example if i am playing cut the ropes and the updated version came out would i be able replace it on the sd card. And also can you explain clearly what swap size means

  • i know what the ext is but i don't understand yet what the "swap" does..... Anyone one? I searched like a million website and know one explains it

  • @ChillaDNF Swap is just space on your SD card that "fills in" for ram if/when your phone's ram isn't enough for what you may be running. In effect, it gives you additional ram but it's a compromise because SD memory will be much slower than actual ram. But it's better than running out.

  • @pocketnow: Can I partition my sd card twice with cwm? I already have an ext2 512mb size 32 swap (If I remember correctly), but I want to make a regular ext (sd-ext, not sd-ext2 or ext3 or 4) for Titanium Backup's data/data folder move abilitiy.

  • Are you high?

  • Hey Pocketnow

Can I Make partition on my Micromax a60 (android 2.1)

If yes then can u tell me how??? please......

  • How do you access the partition once its been done? My HTC EVO doesn't recognize it at all.

  • I can only do this after instal the new rom?

  • WARNING!!!

I followed everything and backed-up my SD card and when I got to the 512mb and 64mb step my phone turned off and now won't turn back on. I took the battery out and everything and now my phone is a hockey puck!!!

  • @Chivalry35 was it a t mobile pulse by any chance?

  • @Chivalry35 Can I have your hockey puck then pleasee cos i have a detonator of a phone and it sucks

  • 2 people have an iPhone

  • @mrzionperez ...It doesn't work that way man.

  • Awesome step by step instructions!

  • dude this is a joke. like ive been trying to partition my phone for the last 5 hours. and now ur telling me to root it. for christ sakes im ready to smash my fucking android and buy an iphone.

  • I booked into Recovery, and there isn't a 'Partition SD' option - why is that?

  • @evilmunki54 might be a little too late, but if you still need it, you might need to update your clockworkmod, or just use the ROM Manager - idk if the free one has this feature but paid one definitly should

  • @JimWestJimWest I haven't found a solution in either CWM or ROM-M - but used GParted to format it to FAT32, then partitioned after that (still no option to partition in CWM or RM afterwards)

  • @evilmunki54 same problem, did you find a solution?

  • I don't have a partition sd in the advanced menu. :(

  • @1337rofl update your recovery version..

  • many many many thanx for that very usefull guide

  • I have a rooted HTC Thunderbolt with a 32gb SD card. What are the pros for partitioning the card? If I do partition the card what is the best size to make.

  • Very helpful stuff. Thanks so much for creating and posting this How-To!

  • S.O.S. please.

I have HTC Leo and i want to put a new ROM with the latest HTC sence from the Honeycomb that i am using now.

But how do i make it work when they say that we:

I Need 150MB and 5MB cache CWR system partition and ext2/3/4 partition on sdcard

How do I create ext2/3/4 partition and do I install the ROM after? and when to i make 150MB and the 5MB cashe...

I think i got lost here.

  • @masated you should go to xda developers (google it) pick a ROM there and just follow the instructions, usually easier than it looks - hope this doesnt come too late

  • how to install clockworkmod recovery on android

  • It does't work for me. i have a Motorola Milestone Android 2.2. Rooted.. and when i use the rom manager it reset de phone, then show the logo of recovery, then restart over again and start normaly, now, when chek the status of the SD card, it doest'n have any change.... now i ask.. So what the F*** does the Rom manager??

  • make sure you do use terminal and run a2sd reinstall after than!

  • when i do this the clockwork recovery thing unpacks itself but when its at around 25% it just shuts down and when i restart my phone it just restarts regularly

  • i followed your instructions to partition my sd card and now all i can see is the LG logo on the screen....i take the battery off and restart and its the same thing...WHAT CAN I DO TO RESTORE MY LG OPTIMUS M

  • Hey Joe, I have done as you said. But how do i come to know that where my apps are going or where is the ext partition gone. As the partition of 256 md ext is not been shown any where in my phone.

  • Ok I am not blaming you but this technique bricked my phone and I was wondering is there any thing that can be done..

My phone is dell XCD 35...

My phone isn't booting and not even entering the recovery..

But if attach the usb cable and connect it to my pc and remove the battery the phone gets recognized...

  • So how do you save it to the SD card (a2sd)?

So if I save to external SD it goes into the ext3 partition or the Fat32 partition?

Or do I tell it to save to internal?

  • HI Joe Is There A Way To Delete The Partition

    ?

  • does not work on desire is their an other methode?

  • htc desire doesn't have the partition sd option in recovery mode. can it still be done?

  • @kayro12345 it does have it, its the same way as he has said. In advanced settings

  • hi just a quick question, after partitioning can you paste your backup straight into the root of the sd or do i have to organise it?

  • dont work on xperia -.-

  • @KidBajan 515MB coz my memory card only support up to 4gb =3

  • In the ROM Manager App you can choose which version of the clockwork recovery mod right? my phone (rooted HTC Aria) by default uses clockwork recovery mod version 2.5.0.1 I am almost certain you have to choose 2.5.1.3 in order to be able to partition your card that way

  • How do you partition the sd card to ext 3. Many of the roms utilize the ext 3 petition. Your videos are great, very well done so all can understand. Thank You,

    Vinny

  • hey i have unlocked HTC Aria 2.1... i tried reboot into recovery but it gave an error can u pls tell me what should i do... i want to partition my SD card

  • 1 Person has an iPhone.

  • if i Partition the SD Card using Clockworkmod Recovery v3.0.0.5, is it ext2? if i want to upgrade to ext4, how can i do that?

  • Im a little confused. If I partition the sd card, Are all my apps installed on that ext? or only the ones I transfer? Also what does the swap option really mean? If I wanted to later on, How do I erase the Partition?

  • i dont see that on clockwork it has it all the way up to key then thats it?

  • I Can't find the partition SD Card Option In My Phone. It's An HTC Aria With ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.1

  • @MandoJM Then don't use the phone to partition it. Use a program, like Gparted.

  • I set mine at swap 64, 1024 ext, upgraded to ext3. I'm currently running this setup on a rooted Sprint Hero with a custom ROM.

  • I have an HTC desire and I went into recovery>advanced, and there was no option to partition. I third using Rom manager bit when the phone went into recovery it said "signature verification check failed" I have v2.5.0.7, how do I flash another recovery?

  • helpful, but what is the point of partitioning ur sd card for apps2sd

  • THANKYOU!

I've been looking at doing this for so long so I can install more apps, except all ive been able to find is crazy technical shit which I don't understand. I love you so much right now <3 ;)

    anyone help...

  • Comment removed

  • i dont get it

  • Sorry I made a mistake it is supposed to be frg83d

  • Can you please show us all how to root 2.2.1(frg83).

But for be I am not rooted right now but I have the padlock

  • So what is the benefit of partioning the SD card?

  • @KidBajan I have the same question. I want to know why someone would do this rather than just pop an sd card into the phone.

  • @KidBajan If i remember correctly, it places your swap file on your sd card instead of the phone. Resulting in more phone space a bit faster response. Someone correct me if i'm wrong.

  • @TyKH

    What's a swap file now?

  • @KidBajan A swap file is actually the extended RAM. If the phone is using all of it's ram it's using the swap file as a replacement. Google is your friend in these situation ;), no offense intented.

  • @KidBajan apps2SD

  • @KidBajan More application to your phone and more space for your phone internal memory.

  • @add119

Thank you for clearing that up.

  • @KidBajan No problem

  • @add119

Oh yeah, when you said "more application to your phone" I believe you meant the SD card or the phone itself?

  • @KidBajan benefit is that you can put on wayyyy more apps , c my hero here has 600 mb for apps .. and that sux

  • @KidBajan

So that you can install applications on to your memory card, rather than on your phone

  • @KidBajan A2SD

  • @KidBajan 515MB coz my memory card only support up to 4gb =3

  • @KidBajan Noob, more memory.

  • Your 'thumbs up' annotations are so lame :p

  • @AmpsNL Thats so very, very true... Have some suggestions for non-lame ones?

  • Swap increase the RAM of your Phone. in the case of the Desire Family and the Phones that has plenty of RAM , you don`t need to set a high amount of Swap (that`s what i`ve been told).

in my case (Desire) i set it to 0 and EXT 512 (i have only 2 Gigs, when i buy 16 or 32 i`ll get 2 Gigs EXT :D )

  • awesome! thanks joe!

    -sam

  • @gazebee Thanks for the suggestion, Sam! :)

  • nice video, but what are the purposes of partitioning a phones sd card?

Ive partitioned my ps3 and pc before to use linux along side the standard os but cant think of any use for sd cards. :)

  • @Smallie7

we partition to create a SD-EXT partition that apps will automatically install to, and is called A2SD+. This differs with the built-in A2SD which requires apps to be manually approved and moved over. Using this option will give you loads more space.

  • @Smallie7 an EXT partition can be used by various ROM's to allow you to install (or move) apps to your SDCARD, freeing up a lot of on-device storage.

A swap partition can be used by various ROM's to allow an additional swap location which can have the effect of adding additional RAM. It's not as fast as RAM, but it lets your "stale" apps move into the slower memory, freeing up your "real" RAM for running apps... which usually means more speed.

  • we have come to an era where we partiton phone drives

look thou how far we have striven

  • @CRAKIZGOOD Or, from a different perspective, we've come to an era where we can carry our computers around in our pockets. :)
