I own a 1980 rlg super grade Burny and it plays and sounds a lot better than my other LP gibsons that cost me a small fortune ! By the way I payed all up about $1000 for my Burny including a professional set up and I was offered that same day $5000 to sell it to him but no way this one is a keeper guys it's the best guitar all round that I've got LOL :)
Thanks for the fun video! I own a Burny Super Grade from the late 80s. It definitely holds up to Gibson-made guitars. Out of your selection I thought the black Orville custom sounded the best - could be the bare knuckles pickup or just that they really got it right on that one. Who knows?
Great job, man. It's not easy comparing so many guitars at once, but I think it worked here. Modeling amps aren't usually a good idea when doing these kinds of shootouts, but obviously there are enough tonal differences between these guitars that were able to blast their way through the digital circuitry.
All I ask is turn off the over drive so folks can really hear the guitar on its own with out effects I have listened to several of these guitars they are not even close to an american made guitar feel or sound, buy american so we can create more jobs the guitar sounds like shit on its own.
those orvilles kick ass!!!!! i have 2 gibson lps, a custom and a special dc. i have a post lawsuit ibanez pf200 and that thing can blow the special away! but damn you got me gassin for an orville now.
a logo on a headstock aint he be all and end all kids....................
-good spot ! Its the Justin Hawkins custom model. I believe only a very small handful were of them were made as a special unofficial run. I actually met one of the other owners through youtube following a video I put on it. Its my pride and joy !
There's variation on opinion on this. Being specific to fact - only an ibanez les paul replica pre 1976 should be labelled a genuine lawsuit guitar, as that was the only company threatened with a court order (but settled out of court). However, given the whole guitar community refers to the japanese replicas of 70's to early 90's as 'lawsuits', -its clearly a nickname of reference, rather than a specific fact. It signifies those japanese replicas which genuinely rivalled the gibson equivalent
@doctorshaw Yes well it may be a point of reference but it's not an accurate one, many myths urban legends can be perpetuated this way. The fact is Ibanez LP copies that featured the open book headstock built prior to 1976 were the subject of the lawsuit .The post Lawsuit modified guide headstock LP's were not.
A lot of post Lawsuit instruments are sold well above their true value.as the genuine article. This is probably only of real concern to collectors, hopefully they do their homework .
Well speaking as a collector, i've not found anybody who would argue against the post-lawsuit era being the time when the best guitars were produced, including the likes of Greco Super Real / Mint Collection, Tokai Reborns, the Orville by Gibsons, etc. I think this is why they are continuing to rise in value, rather than just misconception of the word lawsuit. The Japanese just seemed to produce some amazing quality guitars during this period, and more and more people are discovering this.
@doctorshaw No argument there Have owned several in the past as well as several Gibsons. Many of these LP's,in some players minds, where better than the originals LP's being produced at that time. I did hear that was one of the reasons for the Lawsuit, All that is conjecture really and as you say the proof is in the product. As people discover this I already notice these guitars getting harder to find and the prices on some models creeping up steadily .
thanks mate, appreciate the comments. Its easy in your bedroom - not so easy in a live gig situation. (Made a dogs ear of it in the band this weekend, haha)
Hi there, thanks for the comments. The red orville pickups are stamped Gibson USA on the back, but I'm not certain what the model numbers are (not printed). I picked this guitar up on ebay a year or so back, so i cant tell you for definite if they are stock items or not. Usually, 'orvilles' had japanese pickups, and 'orville by gibsons' had gibson usa pickups. I suspect they are replacements therefore.
Hey man, great vid! Cause of your vid, I bought an Orville 1991 Les Paul guitar and it sounds great!
By the way, what is the name of the piece you played in the vid? It sounds very familiar but I couldn't put a finger on the name. So, what is it called?
Great stuff! - The name of the track is 'Back in Black' by ACDC - probably the greatest rock riff of all time ! Enjoy the Orville, and welcome to the 'Lawsuit' club !

I think the Aria Pro 2's are great. They seem to go cheaper than the other lawsuits. ?Possibly because people associate the name Aria with some of the Korean built rubbish of recent year. The Japanese one's are great though. Mine's a bolt on neck and the body is chambered. Lovely to play. Matsumoko was a genius !
this proves that Gibson and other american made guitars sucks!

Genuine" Lawsuit guitars" finished in about 76 so anything after that is a non genuine Lawsuit
The term Lawsuit guitars should not be used to sell copy guitars after the mid seventies it is inaccurate and misleading .
Great video comparison though ..... ::-)

Orville #1, Burny, Greco, Gibson, Orville #2, then Aria. Great comparison. I'll be 'lawsuit' hunting now ;-)

I think Burny wins. Too bad you don't have a Tokai there.

Nice the actual Les Paul sounded a bit more edgier than the lawsuits BUT the Burny was killer and my favorite lawsuit.

I've got an aria pro 2, and that thing sounds so good mine is shaped just like a les paul though. It's from the 70's.
Also I have to say great job cutting these all together really gives a nice comparison of the different guitars.
